I have been working on setting up a Minecraft server for a couple of days now, and I cannot find a way to get my friends outside of my network to connect. I know they have the correct IP address. I have tried multiple solutions to no avail. However, I can connect to the server using other computers connected to the router. However, I believe that this only works if the router is set to "cracked".

I tried disabling both my router and host firewalls, using a different host computer as my server host, and changing my port. All the solutions I tried sent the same message to my friends: Cannot reach server" when I was able connect. Here is some useful information.

Host computer

Minecraft Server: -Version: 1.0.0 (jar)

Router: -Type: Wired/Wireless -Brand: Cisco -Model: Linksys E2000 -IP Address: 192.168.1.1 -Router Information: Firmware Version: 1.0.01 build 7Apr 15, 2010 Firmware Verification: 5447e765c2287b134ec7028c3b7c9ceb Current Time: Fri, 06 Jan 2012 18:44:02 Internet MAC Address: 98:FC:11:719:CB -Internet Connection: Connection Type: Automatic Configuration - DHCP Internet IP Address: 64.6.115.194 Subnet Mask: 255.255.248.0 Default Gateway: 64.6.112.1 DNS1: 8.8.8.8 DNS2: 8.8.4.4 DNS3: 216.147.229.12 MTU: 1500 DHCP Lease Time: 4 Hour

If you have any questions, please let me know.

You need to forward some ports (router settings) and then open incoming port in your firewall (OS settings). This is where you start.

- - #3

no luck

That's what I tried. It didn't work.

What error did you get? Is minecraft equipped with a manual for hosting servers? If so, does it specify which port it uses to host the server? You must forward the correct port (assign a static IP to the server) to the correct LANIP of the server. Also, make sure there is no firewall blocking that port.

It says "Cannot access server" on the computer of my friend.

Most ISPs will provide dynamic WANIP. You should always check your WANIP as it could change. They might also need to include the port number, such as 64.6.115.194.12345.

I identified the problem.

I got it to work...actually...quite a while ago. I forgot to post it.

I gave my friend the IP address to connect, and I used mine for computers within my home network. On top of that, I set my router's port forwarding settings and forwarded port 25565 to my internal IP (Server IP).

I'm sure that many of you have said this before, but it was something I didn't fully grasp.

We are very grateful.

Isn't it possible that your external IP address changes all the time? Does that mean you have to give the external to your friend every time he wants to play? What happens if the friend's IP address changes? Do I have something missing about dynamic IPs

mscholes said: Doesn't your external IP address constantly change? Is that not a reason to give your friend the external address every time they want to play? What happens if your IP address changes? Is there something I am missing about dynamic IPs Click to expand...

Your ISP has a number of IP addresses. Each time a user connects to an internet connection, an IP address is assigned. This expires at a certain date/time. If the user is still connected, the expiry date/time may be extended. When the user disconnects the IP which he previously used will be available to be assigned to another user.

You should put your host computer's ip address in the dmz of the router (Applications and Gaming > DMZ). You should test it first. If it works, you have to make the computer have a static address in the router (Setup > Advanced Routing). It's a 192.168.1.100 IP address. Just Another Blog Or Something I don't know how to read your manual so I can't help any more. Put the router dmzs for your friend's computers. You may also need to disable the router firewall. Good luck.

I know there are various posters but if you're following my idea look in the routing table of your router for the ip address I'm talking about. I believe it is in Setup> Advanced Routing. You can also keep it simple. Try the whole thing without a router.

Go to whatismyipaddress.com this will show you your external IP used this IP to let anyone over the internet to connect to your server. You need to assign static LAN IP to your mincecraft server (OS settings), forward the ports used by your minecraft server (router settings), you need to open the firewall ports used by minecraft server game (OS settings).

user --> internet --> port:1234 WAN IP, ROUTER-->port1234LAN IP, minecraft server any data that goes through port 1234 (internet facing) will be forwarded to port 1234 of your minecraft server.

Please read the previous posts.

OK, here's what you do:

-Open any web browser on your network and type "what my IP address" You will see four strings of numbers that vary in length and are separated by dots. (If not, please try another search provider). This is your external address. Give this information to your server colleagues. -Next, open Command Prompt. Type "ipconfig". The first sequence of numbers is your IP address. This string is used to connect your game computer to the server as well as other computers connected to your router. This can change, so make sure to check it often and edit the saved name accordingly. Now comes the tricky part. The tricky part is when you go to your internet browser. Enter your external IP in the address bar and hit Enter. Take a screenshot of the page and post it on this thread. I will guide you from there.

NOTE: If you are still having trouble allowing your friends to connect, just let me know. However, you can try to let your friends connect at this point, but I don't know that it will work; It didn't for me.

I told you to post an image of the router settings. Enter the external IP address in your browser's address box and let me know what you see. If nothing appears, your router may not support port forwarding. When you arrive at the page press [Print Screen] on the keyboard. Then, use any image editor to copy the screenshot into an image, save it, and then post it on the thread. Simple.

If you don't understand my instructions or can't read the text, send me your Skype or Yahoo username. I can walk you through the process using Skype or Yahoo! Messenger.

Hey, guys. I have been experiencing the exact same problem recently. I haven't been able to connect to any Minecraft servers for about a month. I had a list with at least ten servers, but they all said "Can't connect to server".

Just a few short days before this happened, my brother made his own server. He port-forwarded and everything. I was able access it fine for the first few day, but then I couldn’t connect to it again unless I was using his computer, which is where we host the server. I don’t know if this has any connection to what is happening, but I thought it would be worth mentioning. I can still connect to it if I use his laptop, and his laptop only. He also cannot connect to any servers other than our own.

I can't think of any reason we can't connect.

I know that he had to do some things with the router for port-forwarding, but, like I said, we were able to connect to other servers for a few days after that, and then everything went dead. I would be grateful if you could help me with this!

To add onto this, we got a new router right around the time that our problems started. While I don't see how this would change anything, I do think there might be something I need to fix with the router. Let me know, please.

@Seanic

1: Talk to the internet provider to find out if there are problems

2: Make sure you have the correct IP address for the servers you tried to connect to. If necessary, include a port number. Note: you do not need the port number if it is 25565, which is the Minecraft default port. Example: IP address 12.3.4.56 Port number 25566 IP Address including port: 12.3.4.56.25566

3: If your problem persists, post your server IP address in the forums. I will also need information about when it will be online, so create a schedule and post it. Don't worry. I will only try to get a signal from it. I will not do anything else unless permitted.

Though I am not a professional, I can still be of great help, because I have dealt with setting up a Minecraft server, and most of the problems comming from the laptop that runs it.

I'll try to set up a day that I can turn on the server, but that might not happen for a while.

But I thought I'd let you guys know that I am able to connect to one server, aside from the one that we host. It's the only one that shows up as online and the only one I can connect to.

- Apr 22, 2012

Well, you need to also keep in mind that not all public servers are online 24/7--even the servers listed as 24/7 aren't online completely non-stop. Server maintenance, power outages or crashes can all impact them. That might be the reason you aren't able to connect to them.

ITS Simple I had this problem #1. Download Simple port forwarding #2. In the Start Page, you must allow something. I don't know what it was. It was something to do with Java or The Jar. Check youtube #3. If they still have trouble connecting, then give them the Internet Router Password. Unlock your Internet Router or give them the Internet Router Password so they can join If they still cant join Then you have a Cheap Internet Rounter Antena but thats how mine worked DONT FORGET TO SWITCH YOUR ONLINE MODE=FALSE IN THE SERVER PROPERTIES IF ITS MINECRAFT CRACKED(FREE)

I have 1 question for everybody, I have a Normal server and my friends CAN connect to it, I made a Bukkit Server but I can join it, but my friends cant and everythings the same as the Normal server, Do I have to Port anything else?? ?

Your internal IP address could have changed. Go to the server computer, click Start, and click My Network Places. Double-click on the internet link it is using. In the dialog box that appears, click on Support tab (if it is Windows XP). It will tell you the IP number. Once you are done, update the port forwarding settings so that the new IP is forward. Note: While I don’t know which tab Windows Vista or 7 shows the IP address, I can assure that the IP address is located in that dialog box.

If your browser cannot access your router's settings pages, you can try entering the external IP into the address bar. If your web browser does not access the settings page, you will need to use compatible software. It does not have a settings webpage. If it does not support port forwarding, you will need an alternative method to forward the server ports to the server. Or, you can just buy a router with this feature.

Note: My Linksys E2000 wireless/wired router supports port-forwarding. If you do decide to purchase a new router, you can base your decision on that.
