It was a time when being young and American meant a world of sexual freedom in an era untainted by AIDS. For photographer MArk Helfrich it was a time to not only explore these freedoms, but also to document them. In 'Naked Pictures Of My Ex-Girlfriends', Helfrich shares with us what most have hidden away or have long ago destroyed- intimate, private pictures of his ex-girlfriends, a decades worth from 1970 to 1980. Helfrich explains "...it was no big deal photographing my girlfriends topless or nude, almost all of them were thrilled to pose for me, because they knew I was so into it. It was fun. It was like playing a game. It was like living Antonioni's 'Blow Up." This collection of black & white and colour images is presented as a nostalgic diary from the carefree sexual seventies, a glimpse of a time and life many wish they could have lived.

The book is obviously not a collection of pictures of the author's ex-girlfriends. There are comments that are just insulting to the women and nobody would agree to have that printed. Also, the guy whose girlfriends these are supposed to be has no set type, no standards on hygiene, etc (some girls have hairy armpits, legs, or are just dirty looking). However, this does provide a nice variety of women doing regular every day things, and it's kind of a fun idea. It sure got Helfrich a lot of book sales.
I've seen this book more than 10 years ago in Urban Outfitters and never bumped into it again. Big bummer! One day, and I don't remember why, I checked on Amazon to see if it even exists. Bingo! I enjoy it very much every now and then. Good for Mark and his girls who did something brave and fun in times social networks where not even a fantasy.
i bought this book and really liked it. the photographs are well taken, and i like the little side-notes. unfortunately, after i bought the book, i found out that the women in the pictures are not really his ex-girlfriends, as he claims them to be. i was upset when i read this, and it gives the book a whole other meaning. if the book really was him documenting his love life, then i love it! if the book is just a ploy to get sales, i like it for the art, but the author could have noted that the women are models.
This book is bound to elicit the envy of most males who were sexually hyperactive in the 70's and didn't think of unsheathing their cameras while they were at it. The naked pictures of the title are amateurish, and that contributes to their charm. The female human body is intrinsically beautiful yet extremely difficult to photograph without making it appear grotesque, obscene or absurd. Mr. Helfrich manages to reflect that beauty by remaining as naive behind the camera as he appears to have been in front of his subjects. Only in America! I cannot imagine such a wondrous collection of nude young women appearing so clean and so pasteurized and so devoid of moral microbes in a foreign publication. These are our sisters and our cousins and our next door neighbors. They are wholesome and good and entirely lacking in malice. The text is childish in tone and scope and that, too, adds to the charm of this book. The captions and comments suggest the reflections of a kid overwhelmed by his past carnal riches who is now trying to be very grown up about it all. It is a fun book that does not pretend to be art, or philosophy or even history. Its blatant title is as completely devoid of pretense as the pictures the book contains. True Americana, likely to acquire value and stature with the passage of time.
I can remember fist glancing through it amazed at the number of women this man has amassed throughout the decade. Even more so to my amazement was the fact he was able to get all of his women to unclad themselves for his photo-lens. Not an easy task for a novice. At any rate, a great collage of his triumphs and tribulations in the young age of the seventies, how love has effected his art, the times, and women in general. I was sold on the story. I believed it till the last page. Like most romantic mythologies, the story is too good to want to know the truth, or care that another truth exists. Its art, but with a story. That is what I was sold on. Granted looking at naked pictures of women for ten minutes has its own thrill, but what the artist "did" to get these pictures in an eventual scrapbook of his life is wonderful. The book is perfect by itself in purporting all of these erotic adventures did actually occur, and the feelings and thoughts as the years went on with the male attachment to the woman figure seem vivid enough to give us our own recall of lovely women we have shared intimate moments with in the past. Its a tribute to the past. Its a tribute to women.
This book contains many vulgar nude pictures of women and sexually explicit language. It would not deserve to get an R rating if it were a motion picture. With so many things worthy of parody, why would a photographer bother with creating a low-quality set of images and sexual fantasies? Obviously, the thrill of "fooling" the media into thinking this was on the level must have been high. But viewing and reading this book won't do much for you. This is a joke book, a joke on those who thought it was a "serious" publishing effort revealing someone's sex life and relationships from the 1970s. It has parody written all over it, in case anyone bothered to look closely. For example, the book says that the author has kept in touch with all of the women and they gave permission for him to portray them. First, that would never happen. Second, several images indicated that the person had died many years ago or could not be found, so obviously no permission was available on those. Third, Casanova in his wildest dreams was never this appealing to women. The book contains a series of nude and partially clothed photographs of women the author supposedly slept with. Each one is accompanied by a fictitious account of the sexual and personal relationships involved. Most of these contain ridiculous fantasies about relations in public places, inappropriate places, and with inappropriate people. There was not a single paragraph in the book that is worth reading. They are just parody put-downs of the women involved. The photographs are deliberately done to appear inept, to mimic what a poor quality amateur photographer would have done. The images are small, poorly framed, badly lit, and printed badly. What can I say in praise of the book? Well, in a few of the photographs, the backgrounds were constructed to be fairly authentic in portraying 70s artifacts. If you enjoy the hoax involved, that's great, but enjoy it without reading the book. By the way, the hoax should get a five-star rating. To pull that off with something this obviously a parody is pretty remarkable. After you think about the book's concept, I suggest that you think about where else we take the printed page too seriously. Be cautious about what you believe! Look for beauty in well-photographed books.
