UN chief receives Muslim World League secretary-general in NY
The Secretary-General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres on Sunday received Dr. Mohammed al-Issa, the Secretary-General of the Muslim World League (MWL), at the UN headquarters in New York City, the official Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported.
“The two sides held an expanded meeting that dealt with the initiative presented by Dr. al-Issa to strengthen international efforts to confront hatred and protect places of worship around the world through diverse and effective programs,” SPA reported.
Al-Issa extended his thanks and appreciation to Guterres for the “great support he showed for the initiative,” according to SPA.
MWL is an international non-governmental Islamic organization based in the Holy City of Mecca in Saudi Arabia.
According to the organization, it “aims to present the true Islam and its tolerant principles, provide humanitarian aid, extend bridges of dialogue and cooperation with all, engage in positive openness to all cultures and civilizations, follow the path of centrism and moderation to realize the message of Islam and ward off movements calling for extremism, violence and exclusion for a world full of peace, justice and coexistence.”
Al-Issa, the organization’s secretary-general, is a leading global voice on moderate Islam. He is committed to “bringing global awareness to the religion’s true message of empathy, understanding and cooperation among all people,” according to his website.
Al-Issa visited Auschwitz in January 2020 for the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the death camp. The Auschwitz Museum declared it the most senior Islamic delegation ever to visit.
He has been recognized by the American Jewish Committee, the American Sephardi Federation and the Combat Anti-Semitism Movement for his leadership and initiatives to combat anti-Semitism, Islamophobia and hate speech around the world.
Al-Issa met Pope Francis in 2017 to forge a first of its kind agreement between MWL and the Vatican.
According to his website, in 2019 al-Issa led representatives of the Abrahamic religions in France in signing an agreement for peace and solidarity, and held a conference on reconciliation in Sri Lanka to heal inter-religious divides.

LONDON: The secretary general of the Muslim World League and the president of the World Jewish Congress have urged the secretary general of the UN to advocate for religious freedom and an end to violence against houses of worship.
During a meeting with Antonio Guterres at the UN on Tuesday, the two faith leaders urged the secretary general to promote interfaith dialogue and coexistence as a way to forge consensus on many of the world’s greatest challenges.
They emphasized that religions have a unique power to unite individuals given that their common source is mercy and peace.
“The world is under threat from pernicious individuals and groups that seek to use hatred, violence and discrimination to target Muslims, Jews and many other global communities,” Dr. Mohammed bin Abdulkarim Al-Issa said.
“Fortunately, however, we are seeing interfaith partnerships blossom more than ever before as we unite to fight the scourge of racism and extremism, and build bridges of tolerance, understanding, peace and harmony,” he said.
Meanwhile, the president of WJC Ronald S. Lauder said the world must stand together against racism.
“Campaigns against racism, antisemitism, Islamophobia and other manifestations of hate will be infinitely more effective if they are united, both by the Abrahamic faiths and other religions worldwide,” Lauder said.
“We believe in working toward a better world, for generations to come,” he added.
The two faith leaders renewed their commitment to working together to promote religious tolerance around the globe and leveraging their influence as leaders of independent, global organizations that are apolitical but wield significant moral standing.
The MWL and WJC issued a joint statement before the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva on Oct. 4 pledging an interfaith commitment to promoting and protecting human rights for all.
It marked the first time a coordinated statement
was presented by Jewish and Muslim representative groups before a UN body.
Both organizations reiterated the need to safeguard religious freedom globally and the right of individuals to practice their religion as a basic human right.

TOKYO: Prime Minister KISHIDA Fumio stated that Japan attaches great importance to its relationship with Saudi Arabia as a strategic partner, as it plays a leading role among Arab and Islamic countries, and that Japan will fully support Saudi Arabia’s economic and social reforms through the “Japan-Saudi Vision 2030.”

Kishida made the statement during telephone talks held with Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on Monday.

According to the Foreign Ministry in Tokyo, they had “fruitful discussions” on energy and the supply and demand situation in the crude oil market, which has been affected by the situation in Ukraine and other factors.

“Prime Minister Kishida expressed his strong hope for Saudi leadership in stabilizing the crude oil market,” the ministry said.

Both sides agreed to further promote cooperation on this matter and in moving toward the realization of carbon-neutral through the use and promotion of clean energy.

At the outset, Prime Minister Kishida expressed his gratitude for the messages of condolence from King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed on the passing of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

Both sides confirmed that they will carry on former Prime Minister Abe’s legacy and further strengthen relations between Japan and Saudi Arabia.

They also agreed to continue to work closely on further strengthening their strategic partnership, including active summit and ministerial-level meetings and visits.

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia’s ambassador to Yemen met with the United States’ Envoy to Yemen Timothy Lenderking on Monday in Riyadh, the Saudi Press Agency reported.

Saudi Ambassador Muhammad bin Saeed Al-Jaber held a meeting with Lenderking and the US ambassador to Yemen Steven Fagin, on the importance of maintaining the UN-brokered truce in Yemen.

During the meeting, the officials discussed joint efforts to make the truce a success and noted the importance of the Houthis militia’s commitment to its terms. They also discussed the need to open the roads leading to Taiz to ease the humanitarian suffering of civilians.

They also said the aim is to reach a permanent ceasefire in Yemen in order to start the political process between the Yemeni government and the Houthis.

RIYADH: The Saudi Public Prosecution said Monday that it confiscated four billion Saudi riyals from a money laundering gang and that it would sentence those accused to 25 years in prison, Al-Ekhbariya state television reported.

The gang organization conducted huge financial operations and transferred them outside the kingdom, it added.

The gang consists of a Saudi citizen and five Arab expats.

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia’s General Directorate for Narcotics Control seized 249,779 amphetamine pills that were smuggled into Jeddah through the Jeddah Islamic Port, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported on Sunday.

The pills were hidden in drilling equipment when authorities discovered them, according to SPA.

A citizen from Riyadh was arrested and he was referred to the Public Prosecution, authorities said.

The drug seizure was conducted in coordination with the Kingdom’s Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority, SPA reported.

Meanwhile in the Najran region, border patrol guards thwarted an attempt to smuggle 25 kilograms of hashish into the Kingdom.

The smuggler was arrested and the necessary legal measures were taken against him, authorities said.

Saudi Arabian authorities have said that they would continue to crack down on smuggling attempts in the country to ensure the public’s safety and prevent crime.

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman received a letter from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Saudi Press Agency reported early Monday.

The letter was handed over by India’s Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar during his meeting with the crown prince in Jeddah.

The meeting discussed enhancing bilateral relations and efforts toward regional and international issues.

Among those who attended the meeting were Saudi FM Prince Faisal bin Farhan as well as other Saudi and Indian officials.
