A Muslim-majority country is one in which more than 50% of the people are Muslims. There are currently approximately 50 Muslim-majority countries in the world, though the precise number differs slightly depending upon the source. In most cases, these inconsistencies can be attributed to one of two causes. First is the age of the estimate, which is relevant because the Muslim population in each country tends to grow, raising the nationwide percentage of Muslims over time. The second cause is that some sources include various regions such as Western Sahara or Palestine , which are sometimes considered countries and sometimes considered territories, and other sources do not.
The Pew Research Center acknowledged a total of 50 Muslim-majority nations (including territories West Bank , Gaza Strip, Mayotte , and Western Sahara) in the world in 2010, but added Nigeria to its 2020 estimate to reach 51. In comparison, the 2021 United States CIA World Factbook leaves out the territories Mayotte and Western Sahara—and somewhat inexplicably, the country of Kazakhstan —but adds Bosnia & Herzegovina for a total of 49.
Another country that is currently left off of most lists of Muslim-majority countries, but which may be added someday soon is Eritrea , whose Muslim population has been estimated to be as low as 36.6% and as high as 51.6%. If updated numbers become available, Eritrea may well become the newest Muslim-majority country.
*Note: At 99.4% Muslim, the disputed territory Western Sahara would rank at #8–but as it has not yet been recognized as a country by the United Nations, it was disqualified.
Although the countries listed above have the highest concentrations of Muslim citizens, it's worth noting that many larger countries have more Muslims overall.
Muslims worship the same God, whom they typically refer to as Allah, as do Christians, Jews, and the Bahá'í faith. While Muslims acknowledge that spiritual figures such as Adam, Moses, and Jesus were prophets, they believe the prophet Muhammad was sent to convey Allah's final teachings.
These teachings are contained in the Quran (often spelled Qur'an or Koran), Islam's religious text, which Muslims believe to be God's verbatim words, which were revealed to Muhammud. Muslims also follow a legal system known as Sharia Law, a faith-based code of conduct that includes guidelines for nearly every aspect of Muslim life.
Muslims follow five fundamental pillars that are essential to their faith. These are known as the five pillars of Islam.

The main regions of the world with a predominantly Islamic population are located in Central Asia , the entire Middle East and Western Asia (except Armenia and Israel), all of North Africa , and many countries in West Africa , South Asia, and Maritime Southeast Asia .
In how many countries is Islam the main religion?
There are about 50 countries where the majority of the population is Muslim.
Worldwide there are about 30 countries with a Muslim population, in which more than 90% of the inhabitants belong to Islam (see list below). There are another 20 countries with a Muslim population of between 50% and 80%.
In 26 countries is Islam the state religion by constitution. (see list below)
The Arabic script on the Saudi Arabian Flag is the Islamic creed, known as the Shahada ; it translates to: "There is no god but God and Muhammad is His messenger." The Shahada is the first of the five pillars of Islam.

Islam originated on the Arabian Peninsula in the first quarter of the 7th century. The faith has spread from there all over the world. The traditional heartlands of Islam are listed below.
Islam is the religion of the kingdom. Officially, all Saudi Arabian citizens are considered Muslims. Saudi Arabian citizens are 85-90% Sunni and 10-15% Shia (more than 30% of the country's population are expatriates or immigrants).
An estimated 53% of the population is Sunni, and 45% is Shia. The Houthis, a Shia Islamic political and armed movement, have gained control of most of the northern part of Yemen's territory.
Islam is the official religion of the UAE. Just 20% of the population of the United Arab Emirates are UAE citizens. All Emiratis are Muslims; about 85% are Sunni, and 15% are Shia.
56.4% of the population are Omani citizens, and almost all are Muslims (Ibadhi, the "third branch" of Islam, and some Sunni)
The majority of Kuwaiti citizens are Muslim, with an estimated 60-70% Sunni and 30-40% Shia. The Kuwaiti population consists of 70% foreigners and 30% Kuwaiti.
Islam is the state religion in Qatar. Qataris are all Muslims and followers of the Sunni Salafi version of Islam. Just 12% of the entire population are Qatari citizens.

Large parts of Western Sahara are a non-self-governing territory; about 75% are under Moroccan control.

Indonesia is the country with the highest number of Muslims. The overwhelming majority of Indonesia's Muslim population (99%) are Sunnis. Nevertheless, about one million adhere to Shia Islam (0.43%). Internal migration has increased the percentage of Muslims in formerly predominantly Christian eastern parts of the country.
Islam in Pakistan emerged in the 7th century in Sindh communities along the Arab coastal trade routes. Today, Pakistan is the country with the second-largest Muslim population in the world.

An estimated 17% of Russia's population are Muslims. [ 6 ] The Russian regions with the highest Muslim population are Ingushetia 96%, Chechnya 95%, Dagestan 83%, and Karachay-Cherkessia 64%.

The European nations shaped by Christianity and the Islamic countries have a shared history of more than thirteen hundred years. Since the 1950s, the immigration of Muslims to Europe has led to the emergence of numerous Muslim minorities in many European countries. Today Muslim communities live throughout Europe. Living together is not always smooth. In recent years, attacks by Islamic terrorists have become more frequent in European countries. But Islamophobic incidents and violent attacks on Muslims have also increased. [ 7 ] There is a growing number of European citizens who say that Islam is "fundamentally incompatible" with the culture and values of their country. [ 8 ]

Islam is the second-largest religion in France. The country has the largest number of Muslims in the Western world, primarily due to migration from the Maghreb countries, West Africa, and the Middle East. Today about 9% of the population are Muslims.
As a result of labor migration in the 1960s and 70s and several waves of political refugees since the 1970s, Islam has become the third largest religion in Germany after Roman Catholicism and Protestantism. About 6% of Germany's population are Muslims.
About 5% of the United Kingdom's population are Muslims, making Islam the second-largest religion in the country.

New estimates show U.S. Muslim population continues to grow. But only 1% of the total U.S. population are Muslims. [ 7 ]
Russia is a transcontinental country, 77% of Russia's area is in Asia. The regions in Europan Russia with the highest Muslim population are to the north of the Caucasus: Ingushetia (96%), Chechnya (95%), Dagestan (83%), and Karachay-Cherkessia (64%).

Islam is the second religion by number of followers all over the world. Like Christianity, a big number of people adhere to this creed; the number of Muslims reached one billion and a half in 2011. The majority of this number is found in specific regions in the world; Africa and the Middle East are the two biggest Islamic centers. However, as a result of the Muslim immigration from Africa and the Arab world to European and American countries, Islam started to spread abroad.
