USA Ranger in WW2 followed by SF current times.
Many other answers talk to the nutrition and calorie intake differences in WW2 versus current times. Very true.
Not much difference in height but a clear difference in weight. Twenty pounds is a lot. Fitness today is generally better (for those in front line military) and nutrition solid.

But it might also be ‘optics’. The ‘kit’, uniform and equipment, is wildly different from WW2 to today. It was a ‘simpler time in WW2 despite the fact that the USA soldier was the best equiped soldier in the war. Like WW1, brute force and blunt tools used by a lightly trained ( by today’s standards) force.
Today heavy uniforms, even in hot climates, with strong personal protection and lots of equipment hung on the body. All useful and necessary. But the side effect is that the soldier looks bigger. Much bigger. And much more intimidating.
Imagine a WW2 Japanese or German infantryman seeing the current US soldier. Frightning.
Yes a real difference in body profiles (weight and height) from WW2 to today but we also should consider that the uniform/kit of todays soldier adds visual mass and the appearance of even larger physical differences.
Comment 12 May 2019: I chose the pictures carefully to support the point I wanted to make but there is an interesting anomoly in picture #3 that I was certain someone would comment on by now. No one has. Look carefully at the weapons. No magazines….
In WW2 US Army generals complained they had to reject a lot of draftees because of stunted growth due to the Great Depression. They insisted that the government provide nutritional assistance for defense priorities. Hence the Women, Infants, & Children (WIC), and the School Lunch Programs pushed more calories into children.
Fun Fact: At Gallipoli, Turkish soldiers were amused at the height differences between British and Australian troops. The latter ate/eat a lot of lamb/mutton while growing up.
