You hit like a girl” “Be a man”. I
think everyone and their mother has heard these sayings or something along the
same lines. Whether it was directly towards them or in ear shot, we all
understand the context and what it implies. It usually is used to refer to male
athletes who are not performing at the desired physical level required for the
specific activity. In reality, these sayings are actually equating playing a
sport badly to women playing sports in general. This idea is not only misogynous
and incorrect; it also creates immense tension in women’s sports, since isn’t
playing like a girl a bad thing? So then should female athlete be playing like
men?
This idea puts us in a conflicting
situation. When it comes to female professional sports, society wants a
feminine, extraordinary talented sportswoman with a stereotypical curvy body.
It is this very high standard that leads us to chastise women based on
sexuality and femininity. Many times we overlook a female athlete’s physical ability,
to criticize their looks and mannerisms.
               Thinking
about the difference between men and women athletes, try to remember recent
headlines about women in sports. Half of these articles one will see the words:
“Lesbian” “manly” “brothers” “ugly”. These ideas distract us from the real
issues about sports like being “badass as fuck” in the words of Ronda Rousey. These
binaries that steal our attention are feminine vs. masculine, straight vs.
lesbian, and out vs. in the closet.
               The
two “Williams brothers”, as they were referred to by the now suspended Russian
Tennis Federations President, are considered “scary” (Waldron). The President made this comment referring to the muscular physique of the
two tennis super stars. The issue with this comment is that it not only implies
that men are the only one of the sexes that are to be muscular but also that if
a woman is as physically tone as her counterpart she is somewhat abnormal or
less of a woman. Self proclaimed “badass” Ronda Rousey slammed social media critics
who stated she was “too masculine” (Mailonline). Rousey makes a point of
rejecting the idea that woman are just here for male enjoyment, “my body was
developed for a purpose other than fucking millionaires”. Rousey explains that
her body is not made for a man but rather it is a machine in which every
“single muscle [has] a purpose”. The women that the media likes to portray as
being “perfect” are those that expect to be taken care of, and do not want to
work hard. These are the women that Rousey detest and refers to as “Do Nothing
Bitches” (Mailonline). When one thinks about how sexist these comment and
conversations are, it is very apparent to see that society has a certain woman
in mind and if a female athlete does not fit within this mold then the critics
“in a way bully”. All athletes not just men, have “done the best [in sport,
they] can do” (Waldron) so it is very understandable why female athletes get so
frustrated. Not all of these comments are as charged as those from Greenwell “[Brittney
Griner] is six-foot-eight and has hands that are bigger than Lebron’s. She
could make an attempt to present more feminine.” Referring to the suspicions
that she was actually man because the opted out of competing at the Olympics,
speculating that she did not want to be gender tested (Friedman). These
comments can be naïve and innocent as well. Ohio State’s very own Cardale Jones
twitted at Rousey “is it weird that I have a crush on @RondaRousey and scared
of her at the same time”. Although this comment was meant to be taken as a
compliment and was received by Rousey in this way, it implies that there is
something abnormal and scary about a fit and muscular woman.
The
next big issue about women in sport is that everyone assumes these athletes are
lesbians. This causes two problems. The first is that is normalizes the idea
that all women in sports are lesbians
and secondly it creates tension within the sport community on both the straight
and lesbian side. Straight women often reject this idea and develop an almost
homophobic mentality. For lesbians it forces them to try not to flaunt or over
sell their sexualities since they could be getting grief from outside sources
but also teammates.
To start off this issue stems from popular culture
categorizing all women and believing in the lesbian myth. Since the vast
majority of people believe that all female athletes are lesbians, it’s never
big news, if a sportswoman decides to come out. This is a stark difference from
the headlines
