The muscle up is a hybrid exercise that combines a pull up and a dip. It is used primarily to target the muscles of the chest, but will obviously hit the shoulders, lats, upper back, biceps, and triceps as well. Muscle ups are extremely difficult to perform and shouldn't be attempted unless you have total body control when performing pull ups and straight bar dips.

Ideally, you can do 8-10 pull-ups and triceps dips before beginning the practice of muscle-ups. You can practice these exercises also by starting off with band-assisted pull-ups, including also negative pull-ups, and bench dips to help build the strength and control needed for a muscle-up.
