Mummification bondage can be an exhilarating experience for both the Dom and the sub. However, it’s also a risky kink. Here’s a detailed guide on materials, safety tips, aftercare, and other useful info.
Mummification is considered an extreme form of bondage where someone is wrapped up or “cocooned” and therefore completely immobilized. You also have the option of wrapping up one (or several) body parts or the entire body – depending on the comfort and consent of the participant.
There are several reasons why people like mummification.
Besides a willing participant and detailed knowledge of the risks? You need something to wrap with. Here is a list of possible materials along with their pros and cons…
PLASTIC WRAP – Cheap and easy to work with (at least easier than some other materials). No worries about cutting out of it because it costs nothing. However, it can NOT breathe and the person being wrapped could experience overheating and dehydration.
ACE BANDAGES – Comfortable and reusable but more expensive. Breathes better than other options but you still need to watch for any overheating. Since it’s stretchy, you can get a tight bind, but it also means it can cut off circulation if done too tight. Can also fold and bunch around the joints.
MEDICAL WRAPS – Besides bandages, there are also other medical wraps and tape that can be used. Good for medical play scenes. Will be more expensive. Need to watch for how stretchy and possible circulation problems.
PLASTER – Extreme mummification (cannot move at all). Uses wet plaster pieces like you would a cast for a broken leg or arm. Not a “fast” mummification. Needs plastic wrap or fabric over the body to avoid hair being pulled out. High risk of overheating (needs parts of the body exposed to be safer). Harder to remove for emergencies. Great for medical play.
BONDAGE TAPE – Safest tape for the skin (will not pull or stick). Only sticks to itself and is washable/reusable. Can be a bit harder to worth with if you’re new to the material. Does not breathe.
DUCT TAPE – Cheap and strong but sticks to skin. Needs a layer of plastic wrap underneath or pantyhose. Also does not breathe. Good for “classic” feeling bondage or kidnapping scenes.
COTTON FABRIC – Safest for beginners. Breathes wonderfully and little risk of overheating or dehydration. Washable and reusable but you will need to sew the lengths together to make strips long enough. Can fold and bunch, so needs more overlapping.
LEATHER – Expensive AF, but can be stimulating for those who love the smell or feel of leather. Similar to cotton, it will need to be sewn into long strips. Can cause overheating.
INDUSTRIAL PLASTIC – Wider pieces of plastic make it easier and faster to apply the final layer of bondage or affixing someone to a pole or piece of furniture.
BAGS – Customized sacks mean to fit and restrain the entire body. Easy and fast to get in/out of. VERY, VERY expensive.
There are several things you can do, but my advice (if you’re new to the kink) is to start SMALL. Only wrap a couple of body parts for a short amount of time and slowly work your way up as your experience and knowledge build.
ZONE WRAPPING – Only wrap the legs, arms, torso, upper body (with arms), lower body, etc. Less movement restriction but safer and good for those who want to get used to the sensation. Also good if you’re using something that doesn’t breathe that well and your partner has circulation or heating issues.
PARTIAL WRAPPING – From the neck to the ankles (can leave holes for breasts and/or genitals). Breathing passages are not obstructed. Mouth free to communicate issues. Can add a blindfold to add to sensory deprivation or control.
COMPLETE WRAPPING – From head to toe (with holes or breathing tube for mouth/nose). The most restrictions and psychological effects but also the most dangerous.
A combination of materials to minimum coverage and maximum restraint.
SIDE NOTE – You’ll notice I haven’t mentioned too much about the steps or techniques on the actual wrapping. The problem is different materials act differently and each person is unique with how they can hold their bodies or how long they can maintain a position.
Aside from the basics mentioned in this article, I find that exploration and experimentation (while following safety guidelines), is the best way to learn “how best to wrap” someone.
For me, I have to watch my partner’s hands carefully. I would not include them in the arm wraps and only bind them in the last stages (so I can see them clearly).
Since mummification is a HIGH-RISK kink practice, you need to be extra careful…
Pay attention for the following, if they appear, remove them from the mummification immediately.
Since the body’s temp will probably be higher, you don’t want it to drop too quickly once they're out of their wrappings. Have a towel ready to wipe away sweat and then wrap them in a warm blanket. Hold them close and monitor their physical, mental, and emotional state until things settle back to normal.
Make sure they drink water. Offer chocolate if they need a pick-me-up. A warm shower can also help them acclimate back to the real world and a state of comfort.
Since this is extreme bondage, never skimp on the aftercare.
