“Tits up!” like The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel would say!
That’s the text message I sent to one of the women I mentor. If you’re a fan of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, you’ll recognize the sentiment. But before I bring some sense into my text message, let me give you the background.
We all have our moments when we feel lost, insecure, unsure, or scattered. No matter how much inner work we do, we wouldn’t be human if we didn’t feel anxious, afraid, or hopeless from time to time.
One of the biggest and most meaningful shifts I created in my life happened when I started to allow, embrace, and welcome fear, instead of push it away.
A wise beacon knows when to embrace the fear and when to let it go. Anxiety, just like pain, is a normal part of life. How long we embrace anxiety and fear—and when we let them go—is our choice.
When you’re ready to create a turning point and to shift out of fear and anger, that’s where Mrs. Maisel’s “tits up” message can help you!
If you don’t watch it, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is an Amazon Prime series about 1950s housewife-turned-stand-up-comic Miriam “Midge” Maisel. Midge works closely with her manager Susie as she rises from her comfortable Upper West Side Manhattan life through the comedy clubs of Greenwich Village and beyond.
At times, Midge feels anxious or insecure about performing. She wouldn’t be human if she didn’t, right? “Tits up” is the rallying cry that emerges between Midge and Susie before Midge takes the stage. It’s a reminder to stand up straight, own the stage, and knock ‘em dead! Repeating “tits up” inspires Midge to pull her shoulders back and enter the stage with confidence and purpose.
At the end of our last session, she felt empowered to approach an upcoming situation with confidence and leadership. It has become a “thing” during our sessions that we use a metaphor from a TV series that relates to the theme of our conversation. So it wasn’t suspiring when we shared a laugh about Mrs. Maisel’s “tits up” metaphor.
Watch this “tits up” compilation YouTube video, and you’ll understand the “tits up” message clearly.
Try saying it to yourself while imagining situations in your own life when the message might apply.
So… “tits up” = shoulders back, stand tall, walk with purpose
Say “tits up” when you’re afraid to say “no.”
If you know in your heart that you’d rather say “no,” but you’re afraid that 1) people will not like you or 2) there will be repercussions if you don’t try to please others, then say “tits up” to yourself and “no” to them. Don’t do what’s expected of you or feels like what a “good girl” should do. Make a smart choice based on what you want to do. Using the “tits up” metaphor can help you strengthen your boundaries. You’re welcome to read one of my previous articles, “5 Simple Actions You Can Take NOW to Create Stronger Boundaries.
Say “tits up” when you mess up and you keep being hard on yourself about it.
We’ve all been there. You mess up and become super hard on yourself, saying hateful things to yourself instead of simply accepting responsibility and moving forward. So if you’re being too hard on yourself, remember all those times that you did not mess up. Remember your wins and successes yesterday, last week, last month, and last year. Put things in perspective. With “tits up”and shoulders back, shift to self-love.
Say “tits up” when you don’t feel good enough, smart enough, or ________ enough.
You were born a beacon. A source of light. You are beautiful inside and out. If you feel that you are not enough, that’s only because you didn’t have good modeling for self-love growing up in a society that teaches us to measure our self-worth by our productivity levels. When you catch yourself allowing your inner critic to run rampant, pull your shoulder’s back, say “tits up,” then stand up and roar.
Say “tits up” to yourself when you allow a person or a situation to dim your light.
We all give our power away from time to time. It’s another characteristic of our humanness. But we get to a point when we realize that it didn’t just happen to us. Nobody can take away our power. People and situations trigger us, and we are the one who give away our power. I have heard it many times from women who work with me. As they step more and more into their power, they realize that they are no longer going to allow others to dim their light. And that’s the perfect timing to pull your shoulders back, say “tits up,” and take back your power.
What are some other situations that come to mind as perfect opportunities to pull your shoulders back, say “tits up,” and step into your power?
I would love to hear from you in the comments area.
If you would like me to help you to shift out of a painful reality and step back into your power, write to me here.

Is there such a thing as being too comfortable? If you find yourself maximizing your space with creature comforts—or even escaping into food for comfort—maybe it’s time to re-evaluate your relationship with being comfortable.
