Buckle up. Onscreen erotica comes in many forms.
Do you remember the first time you were sexually excited by an image on a screen? ( We do! ) ( Here too! ) It might've been a music video to a teen-pop bop, or a particularly mushy episode of Buffy . Most likely, it was a movie of the PG-13 persuasion, which you snuck a viewing of far from the eyes of your parents when you were nowhere near the age of 13. Looking back, those scenes were cute. Harmless. Nowhere near the sex scenes you've seen in movies since you branched out into the R-rated category and beyond.
Sex scenes are nearly as old as movies themselves. In fact, one of the first films to be screened for the public debuted in 1896 and was called The Kiss. It was quite steamy for its time, featuring a full-on brushing of the lips, which, let us tell you, really riled up the modest-minded folks of the late 19th century. But these days, a movie sex scene has to accomplish a lot more to be memorableâespecially when we've been so impressed by the earth-shattering sex scenes appearing in television shows of late (see: Normal People and Sex/Life ). It has to be downright crazy.
"Crazy" can be broadly interpreted in the realm of onscreen sex. There's the hot stuff that begs for repeated watchings. There are downright hilarious sexual interactions that involve comedic timing, musical numbers, awkward improv, and/or puppets. There are scenes from horror movies that make us recoil in disgust, and boundary-pushing vignettes that inspire a trove of thought pieces. There's most of what Micky Rourke touched in the '80s. Here's a selection of 65 such movie sex scenes, from the classics to recent releases, each one seemingly steamier than the next.

Here's the thing. People have sex. Movies have sex scenes. Wouldn't it be intriguing if a movie featured two actors having actual, consensual sex, instead of just mimicking sex in a way that looks great onscreen (opens in new tab) but is almost certainly very, very awkward in real life? No, we're talking about actual, mainstream (or, at very least, as the level of "mainstream" (opens in new tab) achieved by arthouse foreign films and indies) movies with actual plots that also happen to feature actual humans engaging in actual sex acts. Don't roll your eyesâthese movies exist. And, not only do they exist, but there are, honestly, way more of them out there than you probably realizeâand we're just highlighting 75 of our favorites.
You read that correctly: This list contains 75 movies that have answered your prayers and made all of your sex-obsessed dreams come true. They all feature plenty of sex (opens in new tab) , and, unlike most of the sex you see onscreen, the moments of hotness in these movies is all completely, totally, and one hundred percent real . It's intense and kind of hot (opens in new tab) to see people have sex in a movie and know it's actually real, and that's what you'll get with these movies. As you might expect, a lot of these movies are indies and foreign filmsârealms where pushing the envelope, especially in the realm of carnal pleasures, is more accepted. But, some of them feature fully mainstream stars and Oscar winners like Al Pacino, Mark Rylance, and even Dame Helen Mirren.
In 2005, this documentary dug, um, well, deep, into the iconic 1972 pornographic film Deep Throat and its cultural impact. In the name of education, it contains 20 seconds of unsimulated fellatio courtesy of the source material, along with interviews a range of people including Linda Lovelace, Gore Vidal, Larry Flynt, Hugh Hefner, and John Waters.
Speaking of documentaries, 1968's They Call Us Misfit , followed two young hippies named Kenta and Stoffe and was notable (opens in new tab) for being the earliest example of non-simulated sex in a "legal" movie in Sweden.
If you like your horror with a healthy side of sex, 1973's Female Vampire is a must-watch. The movie is literally about a woman, (the Countess Irina von Karlstein), who is essentially a sex vampireâas in she needs sex instead of blood to stay alive. The unsimulated sex comes in during the murder scenes, in which the Countess performs oral sex on her victims until they die (as you do). There were three versions of the filmâone that's a standard, mainstream horror movie, another that mixes the horror with sex, and a third that's straight up hardcore porn.
Another film with multiple versions is Emmanuelle 5 . The 1987 French film is part of the ongoing Emmanuelle series and exists in three distinct versionsâits original theatrical cut, a French home video version with extra hardcore sex scenes, and a US version that includes new scenes that were filmed in a more comedic style.
In the movie, Emmanuelle is a filmmaker who debuts a scandalous, erotic film at Cannes. The original release of Emmanuelle 5 was met with some controversy due to speculation that director Walerian Borowczyk actually only directed the sexy film-within-a-film.
This 1969 movie was one of the first examples of the "women in prison" genre and there are reportedly four versions of it in existence, including JesĂșs Franco's director's cut and a French hardcore version released in 1974 that includes more than eight minutes of new, hardcore footage filmed by Claud
