Mother and Son ( Russian : Мать и сын , romanized : Mat i syn ) is a 1997 Russian film directed by Aleksandr Sokurov , depicting the relationship between an old, dying mother and her young son. It was Sokurov's first internationally acclaimed feature film, and is the first volume of a planned trilogy whose subject matter is the study of the drama in human relationships. It is followed by Father and Son (2003), and planned to be followed by Two Brothers and a Sister, the final installment, though as of 2019 [update] this last has not been made; his Alexandra (2007) is sometimes considered part of this series, as another film on similar themes. [1] It was entered into the 20th Moscow International Film Festival where it won the Special Silver St. George. [2]

The film opens on two human forms, which soon reveal themselves to be that of a young man and a frail old woman. They recline in a silence broken only by whispers and indistinguishable noises. The young man is the son (Alexei Ananishnov) who is taking care of his exhausted sick mother (Gudrun Geyer). Her illness is undefined and from time to time causes her great pain as she gasps for air. Her son combs her hair, feeds her, covers her with a coat, and takes her in his arms. She is totally dependent on him as he himself was once totally dependent on her. As the film progresses, the son carries his mother on a long journey from her sickbed to her deathbed. It is a circular motion which travels a long walk through a dreamlike landscape in the countryside, along winding dirt roads. At each of their brief stops on the journey is a moment of contemplation, caresses, and tender murmurs. These soft murmurs tell of the mother's love for her son when she was nurturing him and of the son's love for his mother as he opens for her the mysterious path to her death. They progress under the leaden and luminous sky of the Baltic, in totally isolated landscapes. From time to time, there is a far away train or a sail on the sea, emphasizing further their isolation from the rest of the world.

They return to the house. The son tenderly lowers his mother into her bed that now seems to resemble a coffin. Although he tries to reassure her to the contrary they both know that the end is coming. He leaves her and goes for a long solitary walk. When he returns he weeps for his mother who's died.

"Mother and Son" (1997) is a love story, not of romantic love as in "Romeo and Juliet" or "Tristan and Isolde", but rather regarding the profound emotional and spiritual ties that exist between a mother and her son.

The theme of death and of a mother and son recalls the Christian Passion , [3] only here with the roles reversed – a dying mother, rather than a dying son – which has been called a "reverse pietà ". [4] [5]

The cinematography of the film featured images distorted by filming through painted glass panes, mirrors, and special lenses, together with sounds of "whispering wind, crashing waves, and sea-gull cries," creating an elegiac mood. [4] The dreamy landscapes have been compared to the work of Caspar David Friedrich . [3] [5] [6]

The painterly cinematography has been compared to the work of Peter Greenaway and Derek Jarman , and the distortions to Stan Brakhage . [5]

Mother and Son has an approval rating of 86% on review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes , based on 14 reviews, and an average rating of 8.05/10. [7]

A single mother was today convicted of having a "torrid" affair with a 15-year-old schoolboy.
Mother-of-three Janice Harding was found guilty of two charges of indecently assaulting the teenager, with whom she allegedly had sex up to 12 times a week.
Harding, 29, who now lives at The Beacon in Falmouth, Cornwall, was acquitted of indecently assaulting a second teenage boy on two occasions.
The jury of five men and seven women took over six hours to reach their verdicts at Truro Crown Court.
She had denied four counts of indecently assaulting boys under the age of 16. Harding wept in the dock after the verdicts.
Judge Giles Forrester adjourned sentence until September 3 to enable a pre-sentence report to be prepared, and allowed Harding's bail to continue.
He told her "all the court's options are open to me, you must understand that."
The Judge told her to read nothing into being allowed bail "other then the court considers it appropriate in the circumstances."
Mrs Harding said after the case that she had no comment to make.
During the trial, prosecutor Michael Brabin said that Harding was 27 when the offences began, and had daughters aged nine and four and a son less than a year old.
The teenager with whom Harding had the long affair "hit it off" with her when he and his family moved near to her house in the town where she then lived.
Eventually he began to go round to her home on a daily basis, and was still at school when they started having sex, said the prosecutor.
They started kissing when he was playing with a PlayStation in her bedroom and it led to sexual intercourse.
The boy's mother became suspicious and sent him to stay with relatives, who he told what had happened.
For a few months in the spring and summer of 2000 the boy was "besotted" with Harding, said Mr Brabin, who did not suggest intercourse took place without his full co-operation.
"A torrid affair took place between them," said the prosecutor.
He said Harding twice had sex with another 15-year-old boy who knew about her relationship with the other teenager.
The first boy, now a 17-year-old student, said in video link evidence that he had been a virgin before meeting Harding.
"She knew my age - three months after my 15th birthday, that is when we were seeing each other," he said.
They had sex in the afternoon and nearly every night, and he slept at her house three times a week. But their relationship was now over.
Harding, who did not give evidence to the court told police she first had sex with the first boy on his 16th birthday.
She said the youngster had been upset that day as he had not received many presents.
Harding said the boy stayed at her house that night, when they had sex for the first time.
Harding told the police that on his 16th birthday the boy got only "a tenner" from his mum, adding: "He was upset because he was not given much."
She said that night they had sexual intercourse, instigated by the boy.
"We were play fighting. Then he just grabbed me and started kissing me," she said.
"It just happened like that. We must have had feelings for each other before but we had never thought about it."
The second boy told the court he had sexual intercourse twice with Harding before his 16th birthday.
He said on one occasion: "Jan told me to go upstairs and look at her new bed. Then she started kissing me.
"It was a shock at first but I just let her."
He said he slept with her twice but felt bad because he knew she was meant to be going out with his schoolfriend.
In her police interview Harding denied ever having had sex with the second teenager.
The first boy's mother said when she realised what had been going on between Harding and her son, she couldn't bear "the deceit and the hurt."

"Does he know what he is doing? Is he aware? Now I am actually thinking what state is he in? Does he know what he has done?"
The mother told investigators that her son had had issues for a long time.
She described her last 18 months with him as being an "absolute nightmare".
