Theatrical movie debut of Tom Hollander (Farnsworth).
The film is clearly set in a border seaside fishing village in Ireland. However, Kathleen is clearly seen voting in the Fermanagh-South Tyrone by-election: a completely land-locked constituency.

With an excellent cast, soundtrack and photography this film's one flaw is that it must over-simplify a complex and pivotal episode in Irish history. Despite that it does a fairly good job of capturing the essence of what happened, smartly exposing the viewer to this rarely seen world through the eyes of a middle-class mother whose son, unknown to her, is caught up in the incendiary world of 'the Troubles' of Northern Ireland. Convicted of taking part in an attack on British forces as part of an IRA Active Service Unit, her son quickly finds himself the cell-mate of soon-to-be-IRA-icon/martyr, Bobby Sands. Although the film does not really explore the personality of this seminal figure (for ex: that he was a poet), it does convey the gravity of the situation he was thrust in as well as the huge impact the hunger strike had on the Northern Irish, indeed people around the world. But more so, this film is about the suffering that the women in these situations, particularly the mothers (hence the title) must endure. They have no choice in the tragedy that forces itself on their lives, yet they must find ways to overcome and affect what positive change they can. Some say there is not enough "action" in the film. It is not an "action" movie. There are plenty of Dolph Lundgren vehicles out there if that is all you want. This film is about how episodes of moving history effects everyday people's lives.

Children's teenage years are supposed to be full of learning and laughter but one man has spoken of the unimaginable abuse he received at the hands of the person he trusted most - his mother.
'Hamish' who is now in his 50s, was 12 years old when his childhood innocence was taken away from him by his mum.
The woman who he described as 'mentally unwell' had sex with him one day when he was recovering from sickness.
An Australian man has told the horrifying tale about the sexual abuse he received at the hands of the one person he trusted most in the world - his mother (stock image)
'She had this big bedroom and if we were ever sick or anything like that we'd stay in her bed. One day she just initiated it, she just started touching me and it just went from there,' Hamish told news.com.au .
'She preyed on the fact I was coming into puberty and made me feel important and special.'
Hamish thought he had it all growing up, he lived in a wealthy suburb and went to a private school but all that meant nothing behind closed doors.
He suffered physical and mental abuse that has scarred him for life and was warned to not talk about the sexual abuse saying that he was told that 'people wouldn't understand'.
Hamish said that the abuse only stopped once his mother died when he was 15 but he has carried the scars of those awful three years for a lifetime.
The memories of his traumatic childhood were repressed and Hamish moved on and fell in love and got married in the early 90s.

He struggled with the abuse and kept it secret from his wife for 20 years until a story surfaced in the news that brought memories flooding back.
'It's really hard to tell someone you love, "By the way, my mother abused me and I had sex with my mother",' he said.
Unfortunately for Hamish the secret took its toll on his relationship and he and his wife split three years ago after he had an affair.
Hamish wishes he had received some help for the mental scarring and regrets what it did to his relationship

Tony L Lavoie, 43, and his mum Cheryl Lavoie, 64 were allegedly caught having sex by Lavoie's wife, who walked in on the pair at their home in Massachusetts, US on May 20
A mum and son who were allegedly caught having sex after the son's wife walked in on them have appeared in court.
Tony L Lavoie, 43, and his mum Cheryl Lavoie, 64, were allegedly caught romping in Massachusetts, US on May 20.
Police were called to their home after reports of a disturbance, local newspaper Sentinel and Enterprise reports.
When officers arrived at the property, they were allegedly met by the cousin of Lavoie's wife, who claimed her relative had walked in on her husband having sex with his mum and phoned 911.
According to reports, the pair told police that it was consensual sex and that it was the first time sexual intercourse between them had happened.
When a police officer asked Lavoie why it had happened, he is said to have replied "I don’t know. It just happened.".
Lavoie allegedly claimed her and her son had become close before the incident, and had sex after kissing.
Police charged the mother and son with incest, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in jail.
Both pleaded not guilty to the charge when appearing in court.
At the hearing, the judge ordered the pair not to see each other.
They are next due in court on October 27.

Her fellow Mumsnet users are far from sympathetic... with many of them saying she should have set better boundaries
A MUM has been left "mortified" after accidentally telling her son a bit TOO much information about her sex life.
Mumnset user bestoutofthree said she was "taken by surprise" by her 12-year-old's questions, and now regrets letting her secrets slip.
The mum explained that her son asked: "How often do you and Dad have sex?" and, after checking that he was sure he wanted to know, she said: "Once or twice a week I guess".
At which point, her son replied: "Oh. Now NEVER say that again," leaving his baffled mum to reply: "You asked! And I double checked!"
Her post continued: "I am a very modest person and never talk about sex with friends at all, but DS (dear son) has far fewer inhibitions and often mentions things I find embarrassing.
"I would never in a million years have asked that question of my mother! Has anyone had discussions like that with their DC (dear children)?
"I expect normal 'what is sex' conversations but didn't expect personal questions like that."
But most of her fellow mums felt she shouldn't have given so much away.
Among them was steff13, who wrote: "I would have told him it wasn't his business."
While TheStoic said: "I probably would have asked why he wanted to know. Seems like an odd response to your answer."
And FenceSitter01 added: "There are boundaries in any relationship. It is inappropriate for anyone to enquire about your sex life, unless its a HCP (health care professional).
"Be that your parents, children or friends. Some things just are private."
While YetAnotherSpartacus warned: "Maybe he's comparing with his friends over Facebook and you'll earn the most embarrassing parent award cos (because) the others won't admit they have done it since the conception of the enquirer?"
She added: "Oh - and they'll all share with their parents and you'll see lots of raised eyebrows. Also - your DS will need therapy."
And MrsOverTheRoad wrote: "I think you should have used the opportunity to teach him about boundaries! It's an inappropriate question."
After hearing from the other mums, bestoutofthree added:  "Now I regret answering.. I was caught off guard."
But VladmirsPoutine was more sympathetic, writing: "Tbh (to be honest) he asked and you felt ok in answering.
"It's not as if you casually mentioned it to the cashier at Tesco or something.
"It's typical that he'll feel grossed out by it. But there we go. He asked a question and got an answer."
TheStoic added: "Just leave it. It's not your fault, you were caught off guard. Nobody expects a question like that out of the blue."
And Lethaldrizzle joked: "I'm impressed with once or twice a week!"
