A 34-year-old South African lesbian, Busisiwe Labi, has been sentenced to 22 years and six months imprisonment for killing her two children.
Judge Belinda Hartle of Bhisho High Court Judge in the Eastern Cape handed Labi the jail term on Thursday, August 19, for each of the children’s murders but ordered that the sentences run concurrent.
NPA Regional spokesperson, Anelisa Ngcakani, said Labi had lived at her home in Dimbaza with her children, her mother and her two siblings.
Labi suffocated her two boys to death, one-year-old Othandwayo and six-year-old Amyoli, with plastic bags at their home last September.
Before murdering them, she informed the children of her plans to kill them. The eldest boy, Amyoli, pleaded with her not to do so but his plea fell on deaf ears. She prayed with the boys, took turns to suffocate them to death with plastic bags and pillows and thereafter laid their bodies neatly on a bed.
Labi was found guilty of the two murder charges on 22 July 2021.
A Psycho-Legal report presented in court revealed that Labi confessed to being a homosexual in sexuality since Grade 7 and that her family did not approve of her sexuality.
The report further stated that Labi had said that she engaged in heterosexual relationships with the fathers of her children because her family did not approve of her homosexuality and that her mother wanted grandchildren. She further added that she had boyfriends to satisfy her mother.
Judge Belinda Hartle during sentencing quoted Labi’s sentiments that although she loved her children she didn’t want to be a mother.
The court also heard that Labi had a conflicted relationship with her mother as she allegedly never revealed the identity of Labi’s father until she was in high school. The report revealed that Labi was angry towards her mother and felt betrayed.
“A day before murdering her boys Labi got into an argument with her mother as the mother gave her younger brother money which was meant to be used for items in the household. Labi felt that her mother favoured her brother over her. It was revealed during sentencing that Labi also murdered her two boys because she wanted to cause her mother grief as the mother had a close relationship with her grandchildren,” Ngcakani said.
After Labi murdered her children she phoned her 42-year-old sister and told her what she had done. The matter was reported to the police who found the bodies of the boys at their home.
Although Judge Hartle agreed with the prosecutor, Advocate Deolin Willemse, that the offences committed were “spine-chilling”, “horrific” and that “leniency for mercy’s sake would be wrong”, she ruled that there were compelling circumstances present in the case to diviate from the prescribed minimum sentence of life imprisonment.
Judge Hartle stated that one of the reasons was that, in spite of the murders being premeditated in that she waited until she was alone with the children in the house to murder them, Labi cooperated with police from the onset and gave a detailed confession of events leading to the murders and the actual murders.
The Acting Director of Public Prosecutions, Mr Livingstone Sakata, said that the crimes were a betrayal of life as the mother murdered her offsprings. He added that justice must prevail.

A farmer, Stephen John, has revealed he derives so much pleasure in raping old women in their farms in Ore, Ondo State.
The farmer was arrested by police detectives in the state after he raped a lady who was sent on an errand by her mother.
He reportedly grabbed the victim and dragged her into the bush where he had carnal knowledge of her at about 7:00 am.
State police commissioner, Bolaji Salami, described the suspect as a serial rapist, adding that he ambushed and raped women in their farms within Ore axis.
On August 5, it was reported that the mother of the victim filed a report at the police station as to how Stephen defiled her daughter.
Following her report, the suspect was arrested and three other victims reported that he had raped them at their different farmlands using a cutlass to frighten them into submission.
In an interview with Vanguard News, he said he enjoyed raping them in their farms.
“You know that old women don’t have the strength to struggle with me and they can’t shout much and the farm is usually a lonely place,” he said.
When asked why he opted for a younger girl this time, which exposed him, the suspect said he was pressed and when he waited endlessly and couldn’t find his choice, he took advantage of the younger lady who walked into his hands.
Two organisers of ‘Chale Wote’, the popular annual street art festival held at Jamestown in Accra, have been arrested by the Accra Central Police.
One of the artistes for this year’s virtual event was also arrested.
The arrest took place on the evening of Saturday, August 21, 2021, outside the Ussher Fort at Jamestown, while the virtual event was taking place inside the fort.
Attempts by citinewsroom to speak to the Police have so far not been successful.
Nicholas Tetteh Wayo, one of the artistes billed for the event, said the police officers, who carried out the arrest outside the Usher fort, caused damage to some machines, and scattered items arranged by food vendors who were getting ready to cash in on the event.
He said the police did not explain the reason for the arrest of the three persons who were kept at the Accra Police station.
According to him, the police officers appeared to be acting on some orders from a political figure.
“I was inside the Ussher Fort, and then one of the guys rushed in to inform me that the police were arresting some people outside, and by the time I got outside, they had already gone to the Police station, so we were at the police station to do everything we could, but they’re still keeping the three people.
“It seems they [The Police] are receiving orders from somewhere. This is something we do every year, and it brings a lot of benefits to the nation and especially the people of Jamestown. People make some small money from it, but it seems now they’re preventing the people from making some money without any reason. The police carried out some breakages; some guys were doing performances, and food vendors were trying to sell, and they destroyed everything.
“Three people were arrested. They are Mantse Ayikwei, Nii Ayitei, and then Kwaku Ananse, who’s one of the artistes. They’re currently at the Central Police Station.”
On August 13, 2021, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (announced that the 2021 edition of ‘Chale Wote’ will be a virtual event due to the upsurge in COVID-19 cases.
This year’s event started on Friday, 13th August, and is expected to end on Sunday, 22nd August 2021.
It is, however, unclear whether the arrest of the two organisers and the artiste was in any way linked to the breach of COVID-19 protocols, since a virtual event will still require a venue that will stream the event live.
Nicholas Tetteh Wayo added that he does not believe the arrest had anything to do with COVID-19 safety protocols, alleging that something fishy is going on.
“We were observing everything; we were in masks. If it [the arrest] is about covid, go to Makola and see what’s happening in Makola. It’s not about the COVID, there’s something fishy. They have their selfish interest, this is what I know, it’s not about the COVID,” he stated.
“There were a lot of people around when the arrest happened. You know, people enjoy coming to this festival; it’s fun. It was supposed to be virtual, but people want to come around, and they were coming. We were doing things inside the Ussher Fort, and not everyone got in, but some people were around doing some performances just to have fun,” he said.
‘Chale Wote’ Street Art Festival is a Ghanaian-originated platform that brings together art, music, dance, and performance unto the streets.
This year’s edition of the festival marks 10 years of its existence since it was first launched
in 2011 to promote the appreciation of diverse forms of art in Ghana.
One of the painful events of life women go through is widowhood, because after the loss of a husband, companionship, breadwinner and supportive aspects of her life are taken away.
Widowhood puts stress on women, which affects them domestically, economically, mentally, physically and spiritually.
Most widows take over the responsibilities of the entire family the moment the man dies normally without any profitable source of income. In situations where the children are many or at their younger ages financial burden is put on the widow.
Some widows live in the valley of ill-health, poverty and fear, especially in communities where widowhood rites are dehumanising.
There are over 1,000,000.00 widows in Ghana whose children risk not finishing their education, thereby not being able to obtain employability skills. These children are eventually thrown into very difficult situations.
In the event of dropping out of school, they resort to unhealthy economic and social activities to earn socio-economic wellbeing for the widow.
This is particularly problematic for girls, women domestically, economically, mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually.
It is in line of these and many other unpalatable situations that WidowsAid_Gh has come in to support widows across the country for them to come back to their normalcy.
WidowsAid_Gh is a registered Non-Governmental Organisation which was launched in 2018. The Organisation aims to inspire hope and extend aid to widows by providing productive livelihood opportunities that contribute to their household income and general wellbeing. The organisation is marked by expressing humanistic values and devotion to the welfare of widows across Ghana.
The goals of WidowsAid_Gh is to provide these vulnerable women with the right economic, educational, social tools and opportunities that will enable them to achieve sustainable livelihood income to enhance their general wellbeing.
The vision and the mission is to demonstrate the love of God and extend humanitarian relief to widows and to inspire hope and extend aid to widows by providing productive livelihood opportunities that contribute to their household income and general wellbeing.
Whoever wants to nominate a widow in any part of the 16 regions must go through four simple steps.
First, one must inform the nominee about Widowsaid_Gh by letting her be aware of the decision to nominate her to receive the aid, second, take information about the nominee such as age, name, contact numbers, year of widowhood, among others, three, submit the information in step two to the following telephone numbers: 0249 300119 and 0262525310 and lastly, have the assurance that the nominee would be contacted by WidowAid_Gh and as such her contact number should always be active.
The WidowsAid_Gh has been in existence for about seven years and it’s nominations are to the general public to nominate women who have been widows for at least seven years without being remarried.
The team contacts each nominee to ascertain their level of need and after a successful process; a determined number of nominees are selected to receive aid.
Selected widows are fully funded, transported to the host city and hosted for at least two days for training and coaching by resource personnel and team volunteers.
They are trained and funded to start various small scale businesses that contribute to their household income.
Widows are afterwards taken on free shopping at the mall, which is fully funded by the organisation.
They are also given cash donations, clothes, electrical gadgets, cosmetic products, detergents, food items such as bags of rice, oils, mackerels etc.
TARGETS FOR 2021 PROJECT
The Project Director, Ernest Acquah, said the 2021 project is aimed at ensuring that the widows are well treated in Ghana.
He said “we aim at setting up Small Scale Businesses for selected widows across Ghana, organise free general health consultation, Hypertension Screening, Diabetic Screening, Malaria RDT, COVID-19 etiquette, prescription and dispensary of medicines and referral services for complicated cases to ensure continuity of care and embark on material donations to widows
“We hope to make over Ghc 200,000 cash donations to widows, provide alternative livelihood training for widows, organise free shopping at Takoradi Mall for widows, free legal consultation for widows and special domestic support to widows
Asked to explain further about the legal consultation, Mr Acquah explained that most widows are in litigation with the families of the late husbands but because they had no money to secure the services of lawyers, they are taken for granted.
He said Widowsaid_Gh will come in for such widows and provide them with legal backing through a lawyer.
