La Luna (released in the United States as Luna ) is a 1979 drama film directed by Bernardo Bertolucci from a screenplay co-written with his brother Giuseppe and wife Clare Peploe . The film concerns the troubled life of a teenage boy and his relationship with his parents, including an incestuous relationship with his opera singer mother. It stars Jill Clayburgh , Matthew Barry, Tomas Milian , Fred Gwynne , Veronica Lazăr , and Alida Valli .
An Italian-American co-production, La Luna was released by 20th Century Fox on August 29, 1979. It received mixed reviews from critics, though Jill Clayburgh's performance was widely-praised, earning her a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama .
The film is dedicated to Bertolucci's oft-collaborator Franco Arcalli , who died of cancer during pre-production.
Joe is the son of famous opera singer Caterina Silveri. While he believes that Caterina's husband, Douglas Winter, is his biological father, the truth is that Joe was sired by Caterina's former lover Giuseppe, who is now living in Italy and working as a schoolteacher. Joe, moody and spoiled, needs a strong father figure to guide and discipline him, but Douglas is aloof and largely indifferent to parenting. When Joe witnesses the sudden death of Douglas in New York City, it leaves him angry and distraught. Caterina, unwilling to stay in Manhattan after Douglas' death, decides to move to Italy with her son. There, Joe begins associating with a dangerous crowd and becomes addicted to heroin .
Caterina is heartbroken and hopes to lure her son back to a safer and more healthy lifestyle. She tries in many instances to get closer emotionally to her son hoping that increased contact will prevail over the allure of the drugs. She even contacts his drug dealer to ask for sympathy for her situation. At one point, when Joe is desperate for a fix, his mother masturbates him just to get his mind off drugs temporarily.
Seeing no other alternative, she decides to drive to the location they originally lived, where her estranged lover lives with the hope that some sort of fatherly bond will cure her son. Along the way, tensions, some sexual, derail and prolong the trip. Eventually the son is dropped off at the Giuseppe's home but Joe, rather than telling his father that he is his son, says that he is instead a friend of his son, and that his son overdosed on heroin after lifelong turmoil over the absence of his biological father. With some sort of closure achieved for the boy, he returns to his mother, who is preparing for an opera. Embracing, they reaffirm their love for each other, and together the son and his father, who has come to watch the performance, and who now knows Joe's true identity as his child, hear Caterina sing at her very best.
In his two-star review, the critic Roger Ebert wrote of Bertolucci "He's got a soap opera and a Freudian case history (traditional enemies in their natural states) and he's forcing them to copulate". [2]
In the London Review of Books , Angela Carter wrote of Jill Clayburgh's performance "Jill Clayburgh, seizing by the throat the opportunity of working with a great European director, gives a bravura performance: she is like the life force in person". [3]
In an entry dated 7 September 1979, Russian film director Andrei Tarkovsky wrote in his diary, "Saw Bertolucci's La luna . Monstrous, cheap, vulgar rubbish." [4]
The movie was briefly banned in Ecuador in 1980 by Abdalá Bucaram , then police intendent. Bucaram closed all the theatres that showed the film. The movie, however, was broadcast years later on national TV without any repercussions. [5]

A single mother was today convicted of having a "torrid" affair with a 15-year-old schoolboy.
Mother-of-three Janice Harding was found guilty of two charges of indecently assaulting the teenager, with whom she allegedly had sex up to 12 times a week.
Harding, 29, who now lives at The Beacon in Falmouth, Cornwall, was acquitted of indecently assaulting a second teenage boy on two occasions.
The jury of five men and seven women took over six hours to reach their verdicts at Truro Crown Court.
She had denied four counts of indecently assaulting boys under the age of 16. Harding wept in the dock after the verdicts.
Judge Giles Forrester adjourned sentence until September 3 to enable a pre-sentence report to be prepared, and allowed Harding's bail to continue.
He told her "all the court's options are open to me, you must understand that."
The Judge told her to read nothing into being allowed bail "other then the court considers it appropriate in the circumstances."
Mrs Harding said after the case that she had no comment to make.
During the trial, prosecutor Michael Brabin said that Harding was 27 when the offences began, and had daughters aged nine and four and a son less than a year old.
The teenager with whom Harding had the long affair "hit it off" with her when he and his family moved near to her house in the town where she then lived.
Eventually he began to go round to her home on a daily basis, and was still at school when they started having sex, said the prosecutor.
They started kissing when he was playing with a PlayStation in her bedroom and it led to sexual intercourse.
The boy's mother became suspicious and sent him to stay with relatives, who he told what had happened.
For a few months in the spring and summer of 2000 the boy was "besotted" with Harding, said Mr Brabin, who did not suggest intercourse took place without his full co-operation.
"A torrid affair took place between them," said the prosecutor.
He said Harding twice had sex with another 15-year-old boy who knew about her relationship with the other teenager.
The first boy, now a 17-year-old student, said in video link evidence that he had been a virgin before meeting Harding.
"She knew my age - three months after my 15th birthday, that is when we were seeing each other," he said.
They had sex in the afternoon and nearly every night, and he slept at her house three times a week. But their relationship was now over.
Harding, who did not give evidence to the court told police she first had sex with the first boy on his 16th birthday.
She said the youngster had been upset that day as he had not received many presents.
Harding said the boy stayed at her house that night, when they had sex for the first time.
Harding told the police that on his 16th birthday the boy got only "a tenner" from his mum, adding: "He was upset because he was not given much."
She said that night they had sexual intercourse, instigated by the boy.
"We were play fighting. Then he just grabbed me and started kissing me," she said.
"It just happened like that. We must have had feelings for each other before but we had never thought about it."
The second boy told the court he had sexual intercourse twice with Harding before his 16th birthday.
He said on one occasion: "Jan told me to go upstairs and look at her new bed. Then she started kissing me.
"It was a shock at first but I just let her."
He said he slept with her twice but felt bad because he knew she was meant to be going out with his schoolfriend.
In her police interview Harding denied ever having had sex with the second teenager.
The first boy's mother said when she realised what had been going on between Harding and her son, she couldn't bear "the deceit and the hurt."
