MFSB makes a bold statement as a soul-jazz band-orchestra to be reckoned with and really shine on a live version of "T.S.O.P. (The Sound Of Philadelphia)". Gamble-Huff relaxed their producing constraints enough so that MFSB could express themselves a little more freely. It's like a sneak preview to their unlimited potential to blend the two genres with a dash of excitement and elegance. The high level of magnificence and excellence achieved with this release was never realized again by MFSB (my opinion). Subsequent releases demonstrated a downward trend toward sounding like any other good studio band-orchestra (my opinion). As with some other Sony Legacy reissues there is no booklet or inner sleeve liner notes, but at least the track listing matches the order in which you will hear them. Still this is great music at a cheap price.

This is not a genuine studio release; it is a "print as you purchase" disc that labels are beginning to release on older merchandise. Sounds fine, but there are nearly no album graphics, and it isn't like buying a genuine disc for collectors. If all you want is the sound, than this can be for you. Unfortunately, that isn't me, and there was no heads up upon purchase.

This was MFSB's debut album and it includes their cover versions of Curtis Mayfield's "Freddie's Dead", Sly & The Family Stone's "Family Affair" and The O'Jays' "Back Stabbers". MFSB's record sales and acrooss-the-board popularity may never have matched those of their labelmates The O'Jays, Billy Paul, Lou Rawls, Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes and Teddy Pendergrass but many of MFSB's albums were pivotal releases that helped shape the sound of such genres as Disco, Quiet Storm and Smooth Jazz. Enjoy!

a great piece of music from my younger days.

the Philadelphia sound is timeless.

Great Instrumental Tunes Here. Truly a classic.

About my least favorite MFSB album.

Elemental Music presents MFSB, the debut album by Philadelphia International Records houseband MFSB, originally released in 1973. MFSB (Mother Father Sister Brother) was a pool of more than thirty studio musicians based at Philadelphia's famed Sigma Sound Studios. They worked closely with the production team of Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff and producer/arranger Thom Bell, and backed up such groups as Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, The O'Jays, The Stylistics, The Spinners, Wilson Pickett, and Billy Paul, among others. The album includes instrumental covers of "Back Stabbers" by The O'Jays, "Family Affair" by Sly & The Family Stone, and "Freddie's Dead" by Curtis Mayfield. In 1974, MFSB released "T.S.O.P. (The Sound of Philadelphia)", also known as the TV Show Soul Train's theme, their first and most successful single, which peaked at number one on the US Billboard pop and R&B charts. MFSB would become known for the hi-hat-dominated disco sounds so popular in the late 1970s and their sound was influential in establishing the disco sound.
