Robin Cole vividly remembers the night she and Elizabeth went to church together on Christmas Eve of 1978.
Although the nursing home patient died not long after, Cole says Elizabeth still lives on in her heart - and through an unlikely souvenir.
“I still have the name she wrote for me,” says Cole, remembering the scrap of paper she gave the woman to keep her busy. Cole speculates, in hindsight, that Elizabeth probably had Alzheimer’s disease.
Cole, 39, has lived in the Valley for 12 years. She’s still a nurse, now working at Sacred Heart Hospital. Her mother and father, Doris and Bob Swehla, moved here 15 years ago.
The family is inseparable - that’s why Cole moved here from California in the first place. That’s also how the story “Song for Elizabeth” came to be written.
Cole’s mother is a writer. And while Cole lived the story, Swehla brought it to life in print.
When Cole first moved out on her own, she was very homesick. “We had $200 phone bills,” she says. Naturally, she told her mother the tale of her first holiday away from her family.
It sounded like a great story to Swehla. Guideposts Magazine accepts only stories written from a first-person point of view, but Swehla didn’t know that. She penned her daughter’s account, and sent it in.
The magazine sent back that first version with a note. They liked the story, but needed it re-written in Cole’s voice. So, Swehla changed it and credited Cole as the author.
The story was first published in Guideposts in 1979. It was reprinted in this year’s 50th anniversary Christmas issue, and is also part of a hard-bound Guideposts story anthology. Swehla especially gets a kick out of that.
“The good thing is that in there it says, ‘Some of the most beloved stories that we’ve ever published,”’ she says of the volume. “So I don’t need my name on it.”
That was the first of about 10 stories Swehla has had published in various magazines. All told, she’s written about 40 - many of them about Christmas.
In 1947, she wrote a story about a boy who came to play his flute for Mary and the Christ child. She never tried to publish it, though. “A year of so later, out came ‘The Little Drummer Boy,”’ Swehla says, laughing.
It wasn’t hard for mom to climb inside her daughter’s head to write her most-read story. When Cole was just a teenager, the family moved to Colombia on a Peace Corps assignment. Mother and daughter soon became best friends.
“We were it, we were each other’s support system,” Swehla says.
Cole agrees. “It was the best thing we’ve ever done.”
Two of Cole’s three brothers have also moved to the Spokane area. She has three children of her own, having just given birth four weeks ago to a boy, Spencer. Her husband, Dave, is a life sciences teacher at the Community Colleges of Spokane.
Swehla says her writing really started when Cole went off to kindergarten, and mom had lots of time in an empty house. She turned her loneliness into words.
When all of her children left home, Swehla became a more prolific writer. But now with Cole, two sons and a host of grandchildren closeby, the output has slowed a little.
“I was more lonely then,” she says. “And I may have told all my stories.”
Cole is certainly happy mom was there to tell hers. She’s received mail saying, “…even if you are just a young nurse, you know the true meaning of love at Christmastime.”
