Most Germans are against key reforms

The German government is pushing through large-scale reforms of the social and economic system in an attempt to cope with rising social security costs. However, as a Forsa survey for RTL/ntv shows, many of the measures under discussion are not well-received by the public. Almost all of the key proposals are met with skepticism or outright rejection.

One of the controversial points is the possible increase in the retirement age for those who started working late. Only 38% of respondents consider this reasonable, while 60% oppose it. The level of rejection is particularly high in East Germany and among supporters of most parties, with the exception of CDU/CSU voters.

The idea of abolishing tax splitting for new marriages is also not supported. More than half of the respondents (52%) oppose this measure, while only 29% support it. Even among the electorate of the ruling parties, there is no clear consensus, making the reform politically sensitive.

The proposal to abolish free insurance for non-working spouses in the public health insurance system is even more controversial. This measure is rejected by 75% of citizens, and only 18% consider it justified. Moreover, criticism comes from almost all political camps.

The idea of increasing the VAT while reducing the income tax is met with the greatest resistance. Approximately 80% of respondents oppose this option, making it the least popular among the discussed reforms. Residents of the eastern regions and supporters of opposition parties are particularly opposed to it.

Thus, the survey highlights a significant gap between the government's reform plans and public sentiment. Even measures designed to stabilize the budget are perceived as an additional burden on citizens.

As a result, the coalition faces a difficult task: finding a balance between the need for reforms and their public acceptability. Without broad public support, implementing such changes can be extremely challenging.
