Timestamps are very useful and important to keep track of the records when information or data is transferred or deleted or created online. For those who don't know what timestamps mean, here is a brief description. When the time and date of any kind of event are recorded, it is generally called timestamped or timestamped data. Some of the few examples are-

·        The time and date of a document are saved or recorded by a computer.

·        The date and time are saved in a digital camera when a picture is taken by it.

·        The time and date of a social media post are recorded when posted on such platforms.

There are various transactions where timestamps are commonly used. Below are mentioned some of the transactions where timestamps are commonly used.

·        Electronically signed documents:

Nowadays, an electronic signature is being adopted across the globe very quickly. But for an electronic signature to have the same value as a physical document, it must satisfy some laws. Timestamps confirm that the electronically signed document has not been tampered with after the day it was created. Hence, timestamped data are very useful to protect intellectual property and also can be used as strong legal verifiable evidence.

·        Digitally signed documents:

There are various reasons to include a timestamp while signing a document digitally. But two of the major reasons are-

o  To ensure the LTV (Long term validation) of the digital signature. LTV can confirm that the digital signature was valid at the particular time it was signed. For example, if there is a digitally signed document with a valid certificate and a timestamp. Then, the certificate may expire in months but the signed document will still be valid.

o  To add authentication to the document about when the signature was applied. For example, sometimes it is helpful to easily authenticate any document when the correct time of signature was actually done.

·        Digitally signed code:

Various codes are also digitally signed. The authenticity of the digitally signed code is maintained by adding a trusted timestamp to it.With a timestamp, the signature will still be trusted.
