More than 87,000 Covid-19 Research Published Since the Pandemic Started

The Corona virus (Covid-19), which has become a global pandemic, has led many scientists to research the virus. The new report reveals that scientists from around the world have published more than 87,000 papers on Covid-19 from the start of the pandemic to October 2020.

Given the importance of the pandemic, researchers themselves were struck by the amount of research and other papers that were produced in such a short time.

"It is an astonishing number of publications and perhaps unprecedented in the history of science. Almost all scientific communities around the world are turning their attention to this one issue," said Caroline Wagner, professor at the John Glenn College of Public Affairs, as quoted by Scitechdaily, Tuesday (2/3/2021).

Wagner, who is also a research author, conducted the analysis with Xiaojing Cai from Zhejiang University in China and Caroline Fry from the University of Hawaii.

The study was published online in February 2021 in the journal Scientometrics.

Researchers looked for articles related to the Corona virus in several scientific databases and found that 4,875 articles were written between January and mid-April 2020.

Wagner compared research on the Coronavirus with the attention paid to nanoscale science, which was one of the hottest topics in science during the 1990s.

According to him, it took more than 19 years to increase the number of 4,000 articles to 90,000 scientific articles on the topic.

This new research is an update from a study the researchers published in July on PLOS ONE.

In previous studies, researchers found that China and the United States led the world in coronavirus research during the early months of the pandemic.

The new research also shows that China's contribution decreased significantly after the country's infection rate fell.

From January 1 to April 8, Chinese scientists were involved in 47 percent of all publications worldwide about the Coronavirus.

Then the number decreased to just 16 percent from July 13 to October 5. Similar results have been found in other countries where infection rates have decreased among populations.

It is likely that government funding for research on the issue has fallen drastically in countries such as China when the pandemic is no longer a major threat.

Meanwhile, scientists in the United States were involved in 23 percent of all coronavirus research worldwide at the start of the pandemic and increased by about 33 percent from July to October.

The new study finds that the number of teams in the Corona virus research project continues to decline. Not only that, the level of international collaboration also continues to decline. Much of the reason for this was due to travel restrictions making it impossible for experts to meet.

According to Wagner, this is very detrimental to the formation of new collaborations among scientists, which almost always start face-to-face.

However, there may also be a political component, particularly in the United States-China collaboration. The Chinese government's study review requirements may be detrimental.

In addition, the United States government has given more scrutiny to Chinese researchers in the United States, which may discourage some scientists from engaging in partnerships.

In fact, Wagner explained that scientists need to find ways to restart collaboration as humanity enters the post-Covid-19 period.
