What’s the number one thing you look for in a partner?
You might go for someone with a good sense of humour. You might love a bit of dirty talk, or someone who talks with their hands. Maybe someone with a big honking pair of... calves.
Or maybe you’re into someone with cute little toes. Someone with a lateral arch that goes all the way to heaven. Someone packing a beefed out abductor hallucis (if you know, you know).
Even though there’s still a bit of a stigma, being into feet is completely healthy and normal. A recent survey showed one in seven people have fantasised about feet.
And people are becoming much more open about it in mainstream media - recent contestants on the UK’s massively popular Love Island reality series have got deep into comparing footnotes.
So whether you’ve got a foot fetish, or maybe your partner does, it’s time to stop hiding away in a pair of 5-year-old sneakers and slip into some sandals for our beginner’s guide to foot fetishes.
So foot fetishes are where someone is strongly drawn to or very aroused by feet.
To guide us through the nuance we turned to Mistress Tokyo, a Sydney-based kink educator and dominatrix. She says no two foot fetishes are alike: it could be many different things about feet that turns a person on, from the sight of them, the smell, the shape, the movement of the foot, the arch, the heel, or the toes.
It could be clean feet, dirty feet, feet in sandals, shoes, socks, or stockings.
“I found that people often want to see manicured toes, they want pedicures. But equally people also enjoy feet that are smelly,” she told The Hook Up.
“Also feet doing activities that are probably decreed as being sensual, but also potentially powerful. So feet crushing things like food.”
But Mistress Tokyo says it’s super varied and can be different for each person.
“There's really a lot of different angles to foot fetishes. And in their own way, everyone sort of has their own particular perspective, but generally it's about the olfactory experience of the foot.”
It’s one of the most common fetishes, but there’s not a lot of research on how and why they come about.
“For example, let’s say you have a partner who spontaneously stimulates your genitals with their feet, and this is something you’ve never experienced before.
“Let’s also say that you happened to find it very pleasurable and had an intense orgasm. This could create positive reinforcement that would lead you to want to repeat the experience in the future, thereby laying the groundwork for a foot fetish,” he told Men’s Health.
Another researcher, Vilayanur Ramachandran, reckons foot fetishes can develop for some people because the part of the brain that processes genital arousal is next door to the part of our brain that processes the sensation people get from feet.
Sigmund Freud linked it back to our childhoods (classic Freudian gear).
So... choose your own adventure, really.
Even though conversations around kinks and fetishes are becoming a lot less taboo, it can still be hard to tell someone what you’re into.
So how do you let your partner know you've got a foot fetish?
Mistress Tokyo says firstly, prepare yourself that they might not share your interests.
“Refusal doesn't mean that you're a bad person. And that isn't a value judgment on who you are as a person, or as a sexual being,” she says.
“Have compassion for yourself and love for yourself and embrace yourself but also be aware of the fact that you are not entitled to anyone serving your needs.”
Mistress Tokyo also says hopefully you’re with someone who is supportive of you asking for what you want.
“If they're not, then I think that may be something that you might want to consider as an area of your relationship that you might want to actually work on,” she told The Hook Up.
“But if someone does say yes to you like ‘yes holy shit, I'm really into this, let's go.’ Or, ‘hey babe, I love you, so I'm interested in exploring this with you,’ just be aware that you really respect your partner's boundaries.”
If someone is open and honest with you and tells you they have a foot fetish, Mistress Tokyo says be open, curious, willing to ask questions and learn.
Then she says if they’re asking you to do certain things, like for example licking your toe, take a moment to imagine that scenario happening and check in with yourself about how it makes you feel in your body.
“So just stop and drop into your body and give yourself some deep breaths, a moment of mindfulness and check in with what your body says about this activity,” she says.
“Trust your intuition and your body to tell you whether this really is an activity that you want to explore or not.”
If you’ve decided to dip your toes into your partner's fetish, there’s a lot of fun you can have.
Working as a dominatrix, Mistress Tokyo says some of the most popular things people are into, and you could try, are things like:
Of course, Mistress Tokyo says it’s all individual with what turns you on, but most importantly it’s about consent.
Just because someone is open and agrees to try something, they can still change their mind.
“Whether it's a foot fetish, or spanking, if your feelings change during an activity, and you're not enjoying it anymore and you kind of go ‘I actually don't want to do this anymore. That's indicative of your consent changing because you have new information that has come in,” she says.
“Therefore you need to verbally offer that your consent has changed and that you'd like to basically slow down or stop the activity.”

When it comes to sexual attraction, we all have our own specific things that turn us on. For some, a good sense of humor does the trick, while others are all about physical chemistry. Others still have more specific turn-ons, including feet. This attraction is called a foot fetish, and to answer some common questions about it, Allure spoke with some men who proudly have foot fetishes and professional dominatrixes. They have plenty of interesting things to say about our southern-most appendages, from explaining the whole spectrum of foot fetishes to the reason for all the foot love in the first place.
In our conversation, foot fetishists explain what foot worship is, they talk about their favorite pedicure colors, and dominatrixes talk about what they've learned from some of their clients. Even if you're just interested in cute pedicures, Goddess Aviva , a New York City-based pro-domme, has plenty of foot-care secrets to share. And what better time to learn about all this than on I Love My Feet Day, a real holiday that occurs every year on August 17? Our feet carry us around all day and they deserve all the love they can get, so read on for a celebration of feet like no other.
"When someone has a foot fetish it means they sexualize feet to the point they become a strong trigger for arousal. For some, it's as extreme as there needing to be feet involved in order to experience sexual pleasure or climax," Goddess Aviva tells Allure. Though it's not necessarily true for everyone with a foot fetish, she says that some people with foot fetishes need feet to be involved in a sexual experience to achieve sexual gratification. If feet aren't involved, they simply aren't interested.
As for what a foot fetish actually entails, she describes it as a spectrum. "On the gentler side, perhaps your partner enjoys kissing or massaging your feet, and on the more extreme side, you have foot-gagging, stinky foot worship, and trampling," Aviva explains.
Kevin, a 45-year-old foot fetishist from California, explains that for some, it's all about worshipping a woman by paying special attention to her feet. "I absolutely have a foot fetish and love massaging and worshipping women's feet," he tells Allure. When asked what his ideal fantasy is, Kevin says, "You're soaking in my antique clawfoot tub after I've drawn a bath for you filled with sea salts and lavender oils, bubble bath, as you drink sparkling champagne." That doesn't sound too shabby.
If you find yourself dating someone with a foot fetish, you can likely expect many foot massages in your future. The fetishist may also share an exceptional love for pedicures , which is why pro-dommes such as Aviva put such care into their foot routines, and their efforts do not go unnoticed. "My favorite pedicure color is red or hot pink," Brent, a 29-year-old from Rhode Island with a foot fetish, tells Allure.
While it's all about the love for some, for others, foot fetishes are more about being submissive and may involve humiliation. "Not only do I have a foot fetish, but I also have a bondage fetish. I love to be tied up, having no say at all, and having a mistress have her way with me," Brent explains. Men such as Brent may enjoy being forced to lick and smell feet, ideally ones that are stinky and sweaty.
"There's something special about forcing someone to massage, lick, kiss, and smell my sweaty feet, while I have their hands tied, a leash on their neck, and there's no hope for escape," says Ms. Tomorrow , a professional dominatrix based in Nashville.
In conjunction with an attraction to feet, many people with foot fetishes are also into shoes, socks, and stockings — anything that wraps around the foot. "I have submissives who are very shoe-oriented. These submissives really get off on tying shoes and heels to their faces, to be immersed in the smell. They will also insert their penis (I mostly work with clients who have penises) into shoes, and use shoes as a masturbatory aid," Ms. Tomorrow says. She elaborates that she has a few clients who are shoe specific: Some only like heels, others are exclusively turned on by old, dirty boots. A few of her clients prefer clogs, house slippers, ballet flats, or sandals.
Physically being under someone's feet is as low as you can be, which
is a beautiful metaphor for power dynamic.
Shoes aren't the only wearable item of interest. "There is a wide variety of oddly specific foot fetishists — same can be said for sock fetishists," Ms. Tomorrow tells Allure . "Socks stuffed into the mouth as a gag, dirty socks to be cleaned, even wearing certain kinds of socks can be a part of sock-focused kink play."
Though foot fetishes are sometimes thought of as taboo and those with them are often kink-shamed (especially those who lean toward the stinky, sweaty end of the spectrum described by Goddess Aviva), there's another side to them many people don't think about. You may relate to wanting to make your partner feel good by rubbing and massaging part of their body, such as their feet, or are excited about the idea of dating someone who wishes to do this to you.
Our feet carry us, and they deserve love and care. It's beautiful when
someone can give you that as an exploration of their foot fetish.
Foot fetishes are just another way to be vulnerable with another human being when you get down to it. We walk around on our feet, all day long, and they carry us through most of our lives, and we ought to give them more credit. The intimacy of getting close to such an important part of the body is precisely what arouses foot fetishists, especially those who are also submissive.
"Physically being under someone's feet is as low as you can be, which is a beautiful metaphor for power dynamic. I also love when my submissive can make me feel good with foot massage and worship," Aviva explains. "Our feet carry us all day long, and they deserve a lot of love and care. It's a beautiful thing when someone can give you that love and care as an exploration of their foot fetish."
Now, regardless of your partner having a foot fetish or not (and regardless as to whether you have a partner or are totally single), is anyone up for a Netflix-and-foot-massage night? Happy "I Love My Feet Day," everyone.

One of the most common fetishes for a body part is that of the foot fetish – 47% of people who have a fetish for a particular body part even prefer feet [ 1 ]! Both Elvis Presley and Andy Warhol were said to have a foot fetish, so you’re in good company if a pair of feet does it for you.
It’s simply a sexual preoccupation with feet that’s specifically known as a paraphilia [ 2 , 3 ]. Someone with this type of fetish might like touching or kissing another person’s feet, or they might prefer to be on the receiving end. Viewing images of sexy feet and footwear might also be up your alley if you have a foot fetish.

Note that some people with a foot fetish like all feet while others prefer to see feet in particular shoes or states of dress. For example, some people only like feet in shoes or boots, while others prefer them in sandals or barefoot. Some foot fetishists prefer feet of a certain shape or toes that are long or short.
Some want them small and feminine with a perfect arch. There are foot fetishists who even prefer larger feet or manly feet. For some people, a foot that’s especially dirty and stinky does the trick. You’d be surprised by how many variations there are when it comes to this — or any — fetish. There’s definitely a pair of feet for everyone with a fetish.
You shouldn’t feel weird about having a foot fetish or if your partner admits to having one. It may seem a little weird to you ( this list has more weird fetishes) , but it’s perfectly safe and legal, and you might find that sex involving a foot fetish is pretty hot! Plus, it’s fairly common as far as foot fetishes go.

How common? One study found that 47% of people who had a fetish for a specific body part had a foot fetish, making it the most common fetish for a part and more than five times more common than the next most popular fetish [ 1 ]. The same study found that socks and shoes, objects associated with feet, are among the most common fetishized objects. Another book lists the foot fetish among the most common body part fetishes (the others are hair and hands) [ 4 pp 89-110].
The presence of feet in erotic magazines has grown exponentially over the last few decades, and there are even theories that foot fetishism increases during times of sexual epidemics ( syphilis, etc.) [ 5 ].
The next logical question to ask is what causes a foot fetish if it’s so common. The jury is still out on the definitive cause of foot fetishism if there is even just one! Researchers such as Vilayanur S. Ramachandran suggest that the feet and genitals occupy adjacent portions of the brain, so it’s easy for signals to get crossed [ 6 ].
One theory suggests that the areas of the brain related to sexual arousal and feet. Another theory posits that foot fetishists underwent conditioning during the critical moments of puberty. Even a single event might be impactful enough to cause a lifelong sexual obsession with feet [ 7 ].
You might remember that Freud thought that feet look like genitals and fetishism originated there.
Whatever the reason, we’re sure plenty of foot fetishists are glad!
