QUESTION: I'm a widower with a young son. I have met a great lady with two daughters who are slightly older than my boy, and we all get along together wonderfully.
After I thought I knew her well, however, this woman laid a bombshell on me. She told me she is a "naturist," which I guess is the politically correct term for "nudist."
Both she and her daughters are members of a clothing-optional resort, and they relax and sleep in the nude when at home.
She insists this is a very healthy lifestyle.
Naturists, she says, tend to be more conservative about sex than the population at large. Her parents raised her in this manner, and she was a virgin when she married.
I don't want to lose this woman, but I am concerned about raising my son in this environment. What do you advise?
ANSWER: I think your "differences" with this woman (i.e., your reservations about her beliefs and her behavior) are more likely to affect your son than anything else.
I would urge you two to resolve these differences before you live together.
On a personal level, I agree with you. I am a bit concerned about what it means to a little boy to grow up with nude young females around him.
I think you should all agree on how to help him handle the situation so it isn't invasive to his sense of privacy and isn't interpreted as sexually seductive.
While your girlfriend may be right that such a lifestyle can be very healthy, I haven't had enough experience to know how to advise you about this.
QUESTION: My 4-year-old granddaughter is an only child. I'm concerned because she has many imaginary friends and often tells long stories about these people.
She is not around other children often, but my daughter has made an effort to change this by enrolling her in preschool pro grams. At first my granddaughter liked these programs, but after a while she didn't want to go anymore.
Someone suggested forcing her to attend, leaving her crying and begging not to have to stay.
What should we do? Should we be concerned about her?
ANSWER: Most 4-year-olds have imaginary friends. They allow children to create the world they wish they lived in.
They can lie, they can steal, or they can be the good girl or boy the child wishes he or she were. Imaginary friends are a healthy, essential part of a child's life.
Your daughter was right to find her daughter a group of peers, but maybe your granddaughter wasn't quite ready or experienced enough to live up to them. Her behavior lets you know she's overwhelmed.
I would not leave her there crying until you've respected her inexperience. Invite over one or two children from the program who are like her -- imaginative and shyly thoughtful. Let them play and have outings together.

Now Reading Nudist Camp Etiquette With Barbie Ferreira
It's not every day that you take Internet star and actress Barbie Ferreira to a nudist camp, but that's exactly what Refinery29 did. As part of the ongoing series How To Behave , Euphoria star Ferreira sought out to interrogate public opinions on body image, body hair and nudity.
The 25-year-old hasn't been immune to public scrutiny about her weight. As someone who lives outside of the sample size, she has spoken out about the "backhanded compliments" she's received. "It’s not radical for me to be wearing a crop top," she told Who What Wear , adding that people project confidence onto her simply because of her weight.
"Many of us are self-conscious about our bodies because we’re still very much judged on how we look. So I’m on a journey to see if it’s possible to love your body wholeheartedly," Ferreira says in this Refinery29 video .
Walking through a park, she interviews passersby, asking them questions ranging from what body hair they remove to what they like to see on other women. She found that some people aren't "crazy about" body hair on others and some people "shave [their] arms and legs and armpits." One person admitted to "just let[ting] it all hang out... all natural" but added that they "don’t particularly care for body hair on women [though] a little hair on the arm is okay."
"I used to really hate having body hair… but when I stopped shaving and stuff that’s when I really grew into myself and was able to realize this is what my body does and it does it for a reason. Before I always felt like I had to shave," Bronx-born artist Monica Hernandez tells Ferreira.
Then, Ferreira pays a visit to Young Naturists America, a group of people that believe in tolerance, body positivity and ending censorship around bodies. Here, we see her interacting with a group of naturists in their birthday suits — congregating around campfires, skinny dipping and sunbathing outdoors.
"It’s designated to be a safe space," says Ferreira at the end of the experience. "Being here you can feel whole because you’re more than just your body, you are a person.”

A very fine short film written by Jean-Julien Chervier. It's a story of a woman who brings her son to a vacation spot at a nudist camp. The boy, played by Marc Beffa, shows he is a lot wiser that most folks would perceive him to be, as he faces a life challenge of knowing the right thing to do when he meets one of the other female tourists at the camp and the two find themselves on a path to a budding romance. The lead female, played by Geraldine Martineau, is nude through most of this film, although Geraldine is indeed an adult so no controversy in that department. Trivia: Geraldine, it is understood, was well into her 20s when she played her role in this film 2009. Basically the film is about the main character overcoming fears that have haunted him up until that visit to the camp, and the 'thawing out,' as the title implies, reveals in the boy someone about to become a very responsible yet gentle young man who realizes the importance of a well- thought out decision with respects to folks around him. Nicely filmed in the hills of France, with the participation of Arte France Television and the Center of National Cinematography, and backed by the Aquitaine Region and the Department of Health, you are assured that this short film was produced under strict guidelines and regulations in order to insure that all was done in accordance to laws and proper procedure. La Fonte des Neiges has aired on French national television and has toured the French and U.S. film festivals. La Fonte des Neiges is one of the very rare naturist-nudist based films where a good sense of responsibility is exhibited at a time when romance sets in and represents a potentially consequential proposition.
