Monmouth Shattered by Record-Breaking Heatwave as Temperatures Soar

Monmouth — A brutal heatwave tightened its grip on the town Wednesday, blasting temperatures past records and turning sidewalks into mirrors of heat. By midafternoon, thermometers hovered around 104–106°F (40–41°C) in several neighborhoods, and the heat index surged above 110°F in parts of the city, leaving residents seeking shade and a breeze wherever they could find it.

City officials issued an excessive heat advisory and opened cooling centers at the public library, the community center, and several housing complexes for the elderly. Local hospitals reported a noticeable uptick in patients with dehydration and heat-related fatigue, though officials said there were no reports of severe incidents tied to the weather so far.

'The heat is relentless,' said Maria Lopez, a 72-year-old resident who sought relief at the library. 'We’re trying to drink water, stay inside, and check on neighbors who don’t have air conditioning.' City workers distributed bottled water and ice along with information on recognizing heat illness and staying safe.

Public schools and outdoor recreation programs canceled afternoon activities, and transit services adjusted schedules to avoid peak-heat hours. Utilities indicated electricity demand reached a seasonal peak, prompting precautionary alerts about power usage and encouraging residents to conserve energy.

Forecasters warned the heat would persist into Thursday, with some relief possible by the weekend as a cold front approaches. For now, officials urged people to stay indoors during the heat of the day, wear light clothing, and check on vulnerable neighbors.
