Money Goals: Processes of Consciousness
🤔 How many units or processes do you think the conscious mind can handle at once without leaving you completely drained by the end of the day? How many tasks can your consciousness actually manage simultaneously? There’s actually a concept called “Miller's Law”. It varies from person to person — it's 7±2 units, meaning somewhere between 5 and 9.
📉 However, lately — due to stress, war, and everything going on in our lives — psychologists say it’s now minus two units, so around 3–7. In reality, your conscious mind can comfortably switch between no more than 3 to 4 tasks at a time. Don’t flatter yourself by thinking it’s 7, because I haven’t met anyone who could truly handle 7, let alone 9, as they used to say before the full-scale invasion.
🍳 To explain how this works, imagine this: you’re cooking, your child is running around and needs your conscious attention, you need to respond to work messages — and if your phone rings at that moment, you’re already overwhelmed and mentally checked out.
🧠 And when you check out, the subconscious takes over. And if there’s no process related to the current situation stored in your subconscious, you won’t know how to react — and a childlike response kicks in. You’ll revert to the response pattern that was imprinted in you as a child. Because in a stressful situation, when too much is happening at once, you don’t rise to the level of your expectations — you fall to the level of your skills. And what is a skill? It’s what’s already embedded in your subconscious — the things you do automatically, without thinking.
