In this sequel, not only are the police inept, so is the legal system that allowed a woman who killed at least five or more people to go free so she could take part in a drug trial that modifies behavior. And then people start dying and everyone thinks it’s Mommy but they can’t prove it. Well…that’s just stupid. Again, the only thing good about this movie is Patty McCormack as Mommy.
B&S About Movies Reviewed in the United States on March 29, 2021
This movie starts right where the original ended, with former The Bad Seed Patty McCormack’s character Mrs. Sterling about to be executed by lethal injection for the murders in the first movie. For some reason, her sister Beth (Brinke Stevens) has brought Mommy’s daughter to watch her die, as well as her attorney (Mickey Spillane!). Mommy is granted last rites and uses that to escape before being shot and wounded by her nemesis Lt. March (now played by Arlen Dean Snyder instead of Jason Miller) who has a stroke before he can finish her off. For some reason — or we wouldn’t have a movie — Mrs. Sterling doesn’t go back on Death Row. Instead, her psychiatrist makes a crazy deal with the state. She’ll live as long as she undergoes a radical surgery where anti-psychotic medicine will be automatically be released into her body through a device implanted in her hand. Sure! I mean, why not! Everyone who crosses Mrs. Sterling as she tries to reconnect with her daughter gets horribly murdered, which we’re led to believe is all her doing. Or is it? There’s also the matter of her sister getting married to Paul Conway (Paul Petersen from The Donna Reed Show), the man who wrote The Mommy Murders, a book all about the first movie’s events. By the end of the movie, rest assured, Mrs. Sterling is back to her old ways but strangely enough as the heroine of this story. McCormack, Rachel Lemieux, Brinke Stevens, Marian Wald and Spillane all play the same characters as in the original film, while Sarah Jane Miller returns as the twin sister of the character that Mommy killed in the original movie. Shot in Iowa all over again, this movie even has a real TV show — Paula Sands Live — and takes advantage of Lemieux’s ice skating interest as part of her character. The last shot of the movie, with Stevens looking like she’s about to kill everyone — was to set up a third film where she would try to do pretty much that while being opposed by a now heroic Mrs. Sterling.

A good sequel. Not sure why Prime listed is as being made in 2020.

I think some of the reviewers on this page were too harsh on this film. Sure, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but let's not be unkind. Max Allan Collins clearly tried to make a decent sequel to his first film, the smart and wickedly entertaining MOMMY, and I think, for the most part, he succeeds. Patty McCormack effectively reprises the role she played in the earlier film, the ever-devoted MOMMY who is trying to win back the love and respect of her adorable young daughter. However, further killings ensue, and it seems that dear, loving mother is up to her same old tricks. Or is she? Sequels are seldom as good as their predacessors, but I think MOMMY 2 comes very close and at any rate, it's just a fun and entertaining thriller. Despite a few added gore effects, MOMMY 2 still concentrates more on plot and character rather than supplying cheap thrills, and that's the best way to do it!

Mommy was an Ok story, it tried to be classy but failed because of sluggish pace and lack of action. But this very cheap sequel is just terrible. The cast is awful, cheap gore has been added this time around, and the story is stupid. Please, no Mommy 3 (unless they shoot it in 3-D!) Well, maybe not even then.....

I am a professional book reviewer in the mystery and horror fields but always before in books. I've published in The LA Times and over 20 other publications. I've never reviewed a movie before. I came to Mommy 2 by reading the book first by Max Allan Collins. It was great and I was surprised to realize after I read it that it was a novelization. Novelizations of films usually don't interest me, even, when in this case they are adapated by the screen-writer. But Mommy 2 was a sensational read, so I thought I'd rent the movie. Was I happy I did. A Great cast headed by a truly brilliant performance by Patty McCormack made the film an even more pleasureably scary and suspenseful experience than reading the book. Seeing the legendary Mickey Spillane on screen was a special treat. Now I've got to read and see Mommy, the first film. My only regret was I kind of did it backwards, but backwards or forwards, book or movie, this is one of those unexpected surprise finds and all readers and/or cinema fans will know exactly what I mean. It's like finding a $50.00 bill you didn't know you had in the little pocket of your jeans. What a treat!

I'm the writer/director of this movie, and my rating here is designed to expose a campaign by a disgruntled, fired co-worker who is sending anonymous one-star reviews for this feature in an attempt to attack me and this film. For the information of potential viewers, reviewers including the New York Daily News tended to give our sequel three-star ratings. Thank you.

This movie is excellent. I have also read the Mommy books and I must say that Max Allen Collins is a superb writer. I hope that he continues to entertain us further with future thrillers.
