Glamour explains that pregnant mothers have strange cravings due to "cultural expectations."
As a woman, there are a bunch of thoughts that go through my head thinking about what pregnancy would be like — what it would feel like. One of those thoughts, however, that can't escape me are what will my cravings be like! I know many women who (sadly) didn't have any insane cravings, they were simply hungrier than normal but didn't eat unusual food combinations. However, there are many women out there (like the 20 women below) who had cravings so odd, they couldn't help but post it online for others to giggle at. But do women ever think about why we may have some of these cravings?
Glamour explains that pregnant mothers have strange cravings due to "cultural expectations." Huh? In short, many women feel pressed to have these wild cravings, so they take advantage of this time when with child. However, Sanam Hafeez, Psy.D., explains how women's hormones are so out of funk that they eat whatever won't make them sick (pickles and ice cream, anyone?). It's ironic that some women will eat the most peculiar combinations to not make them sick, but if they ate those combinations when not pregnant, it would probably make them sick!
When I think of Totino's Pizza Rolls, I think of my college days, putting those puff pastries in the pizza oven and dipping them in ranch sauce. Some may say pizza bites and ranch is disturbing, but not as disturbing as pizza rolls and Jell-O. I guess it's a good thing that this hungry momma didn't dip her rolls in the Jello-O, right? At least she's eating them separately. I think we've all wanted to eat two things at the same time because we couldn't make up our minds. But this combo... it's one in a million.
Teri Reed took to Facebook to talk about her pregnancy craving, and I think it's safe to say it's only been seen once before: in the movie Elf . "I didn't know I was pregnant, but I was watching Elf . Buddy was making his spaghetti with the maple syrup, candy, marshmallows, etc, and it looked AMAZING! Tested [sic] positive two days later."
I think we were all a little curious about this breakfast combination after seeing Buddy chow down at the breakfast table, but I didn't think anyone was actually brave enough to do it...
At first glance, I thought this was macaroni and cheese with BBQ sauce. While that might sound random at first, It's a classic Southern dish that often goes hand-in-hand, so it's not that weird of a craving. However, this soon-to-be momma explained what exactly was in her meal and it's not what I expected...
"My pregnancy cravings are getting interesting... Weird pasta, cheese, HP sauce, peppers, and smoked sausage concoction." I can deal with pasta and cheese, but smoked sausage with it? That's a new one.
Okay, this picture might seem disgusting, but when you stop and think about it, it kind of makes sense. There are a ton of people who love the whole salty/sweet combination, so thinking of a potato chip's salt mixed with the sweetness of a marshmallow makes sense. It's weird...but it makes sense. To be honest, I think the missing ingredient that would make this little combination even better is a drizzle of chocolate... aka: s'mores with chips instead of graham crackers.
Here's the thing, this combination would not be weird at all if this woman used Italian sausage (instead of hot dogs) and any other cheese besides those blocky pieces of cheese thrown on top. It could at least pass as some kind of Italian dish instead of some strange pregnancy craving posted on Instagram. But hey, if this meal made this mom's day and helped her feel her best — then more power to her. Eat those hot dogs, girl!
From afar, this image kind of looks like it could be on Top Chef . Not knowing what's in it, I would assume it was some high-class ingredients incorporated inside a massive mushroom? But I was wrong. Really wrong. This vegan mom's pregnancy craving was Coconut whip cream, avocado, banana, peanut butter, and walnuts on top of....well, I'm not so sure. Maybe one of those wafers? Honestly, it beats me. Coconut whipped cream and avocados is a special kind of menu.
Personally, I don't think there are many sauces that go well with oranges or clementines, but this soon-to-be-mom wanted hot sauce mixed with her sweet fruit! If anything, I could see her mixing these clementines with peanut butter but hot sauce ? I don't know if I would try this combination on a good day, but if it satisfied her cravings — good for her. I wonder what other fruit she mixed with hot sauce... Or should I say what other sauces she mixed with her fruit...
Advertisers Vicky Jacob-Ebbinghaus and Juarez Rodrigues decided to create an entire book dedicated to the strange cravings pregnant women desired, plated in a way that would be presented in a high-end restaurant. The above meal looks semi appetizing, right? Well, that might change once you find out it's mashed potatoes with caramel sauce. The duo also tasted the combinations, saying "Not quite as tasty as mashed potato without caramel sauce or caramel sauce without mashed potato, but still strangely more-ish" about this dish.
For whatever reason, the on-going joke about women's pregnancy cravings are how much women want pickles. Personally, I already love a good pickle, so I can't imagine craving them already more than I do now!
This mom didn't only crave pickles though, she also craved vanilla ice cream. "Yes, it seriously happens" @Wessaowynn captioned her picture. Who knows, maybe she even added the pickle juice to her ice cream. Considering how many people adore pickle juice, I can see people creating their own pickle ice cream when not pregnant.
Ladies and gentleman, I have in front of you a combination of foods no one expected to see in their lifetime. "Avocado with milk choco [sic] powder, and ice cubes," the Instagram user posted. I know these days there are many desserts created from avocados and chocolate but when mixed together like this with ice cubes ...it's unfathomable. "Second trimester has been really good to me, no more nausea so more appetite, more energy to eat and go out," the momma wrote ecstatically.
Oh, did you think this was ice cream picked up from some fast food restaurant? You'd be dead wrong. Seeing cottage cheese and mustard swirled together is something I never thought I'd see. I honestly thought it was honey (which sounds super good). I know there are a ton of things people can mix with cottage cheese, but mustard ? That's a new one for me. I wonder if this is a little midnight snack she'll be snacking on post-pregnancy, too!
@RougeLikeAGirl tweeted this fascinating combination during her pregnancy. "Tonight I ate pulled pork on ice cream with hot tequila lime caramel sauce."
*everyone please take a moment of silence*
I can get behind pulled pork and lime, but adding the sweetness of ice cream and tequila-lime caramel sauce to it is one of a kind. Also, I've never heard of tequila-lime caramel sauce in my life, but something tells me I'd like it with literally anything but pork. Actually... I take that back. I have no idea what that would go well with. Key lime pie?
Ring the alarms — this is a craving I would ACTUALLY eat! Ahi tuna on top of cheese pizza? Sure, why not! I know ahi tuna is usually best eaten alone or even in fish tacos, but on top of a pizza? Why haven't I thought of this before? It's semi-classy with the fish, and college-friendly at the same time because of the pizza! If this is what she craved regularly, I wonder what else she ate! She should have made a public diary.
Bustle asked a community of women what their strangest pregnancy cravings were, and while many of them were odd, the one that stood out most was definitely "Tomatoes and icing." Thinking of tomatoes with anything other than olive oil, salt, or balsamic is just weird. I mean, anything acidic would be good with it, but frosting ? I don't really think of tomatoes when I'm planning for dessert, so I think I'll leave the tomatoes and icing to this lovely momma.
I know a ton of people who enjoy chewing on Tums when they have an upset stomach or even just for the taste. I think Tums all taste like chalk, but hey, they're way more popular than I give them credit for. Similar to Tums, Halls cough drops are awesome for when you're not feeling your best. Craving them as a snack, however, is not something I'd really recommend. One husband confided in Bustle about his wife's pregnancy craving saying, "Halls. She would eat them by the box."
Some women know they're pregnant right away when they start craving weird food combinations, but there are some women who crave these kinds of things and don't think twice about. I know when I have my time of the month, I crave some strange things at the same time. One woman told Bustle, "My mom likes to tell the story of how she knew she was pregnant with me. She was at her mother-in-law's house (my grandmother) when she asked my dad to get her a banana with lemon juice. My grandmother looked at her and asked point blank 'are you pregnant?' Nine months later, I popped out."
This image of Twizzlers dipped in Nutella seems kind of disgusting, but when I stop and think about it, it's actually a smart combination! Most Twizzlers are strawberry or cherry flavored anyway, so dipping those flavors in chocolate kind of works! Also, the company even created chocolate flavored Twizzlers a few years back, so if anything, this mom is just making a better version of an older product. And if I'm being Frank, dipping them in Nutella sounds better than buying the packaged Twizzlers.
Part of me is disturbed, the other part of me wants to give a standing ovation to this bacon-craving mom. How does one make this exactly? Bacon is usually scalding hot and super greasy... how long do you have to wait to dip those greasy strips into dark chocolate? It seems like a long process just for a snack, but hey, a pregnant momma gets what she wants, right? I'm also assuming that's powder sugar sprinkled on top of the bacon, so that's some dedication right there.
Clam chowder is such an underrated soup, if you ask me. It's everything one could ever need in a hearty soup on a cold night or a cool afternoon. But mixing them with Doritos? Now that's a new one. Most clam chowders come with those small crackers for people to mix in their soup — you know, for a little added crunch. But I guess Doritos is a cheesy twist to an otherwise bland idea. The cheesy goodness of those tortilla chips could add a modern twist to this New England favorite.
This story about a soon-to-be-mom and her hatred (and curiosity) for onions is definitely one for the books. "I found out I was pregnant because out of nowhere I just wanted onions. I hated onions. I would find myself in the kitchen thinking, What can I put an onion in? I just want an onion . I told a friend about it and she said, 'Haha, maybe you’re pregnant.' I said, 'That’s not funny,' then took a test, then another, then another and I couldn’t deny all those pink plus signs. I was pregnant."
