A mother woke up in the night to find her 14-year-old son raping her, a court heard.
Initially she thought it was a dream, but after realising the "enormity of the situation" she began screaming.
Her teenage son, who is on medication for ADHD, had been having behavioural problems in recent weeks, Preston Crown Cour was told.
For some years he had been in the habit of climbing into bed with his mother, but the boy - from Blackpool and now aged 15 - denied a charge of rape.
The prosecution said the woman had been asleep before waking and realising the "enormity of the situation, that her son was in the process of having sex with her".
In her police interview - which was taped and played in court, the woman said she was "trembling from the inside" after the alleged attack.
The teenager, who cannot be identified, left the courtroom while the interview was played.
Judge Pamela Badley explained to the jury he did not want to be present during the interview and that she had given him permission to leave.
Speaking of what happened, the woman told police: "I just know when I opened my eyes he was there. I don't even know what I said. He scuttled out of the room and didn't say anything.
"I just sat there holding my covers, screaming and thinking 'what the hell's just gone on?'
"Does he know what he is doing? Is he aware? Now I am actually thinking what state is he in? Does he know what he has done?"
The mother told investigators that her son had had issues for a long time.
She described her last 18 months with him as being an "absolute nightmare".

KIRKWOOD, Calif. – A mom and her son were safely returned to family members on Friday morning after becoming lost while skiing at Kirkwood Mountain Resort on Thursday, according to a statement from Alpine County Sheriff’s Office.
Half Moon Bay, Calif. residents Sally Coverdell, 55, and her 24-year-old son Robert Coverdell became lost in snowy conditions, but found shelter from the storm near Silver Lake, according to the statement. Silver Lake is less than 2 miles southwest of Kirkwood.
The pair were last seen at the top of Chair 6 around noon on Thursday, prompting an search by Amador County and Alpine County search and rescue personnel, according to the statement.
The initial search was unsuccessful and Alpine County and Amador County personnel were joined by El Dorado County, the U.S. Forest Service and a search helicopter from the Fallon Naval Air Station Friday morning.
The mother and son walked out to Highway 88 about 10:30 a.m. on Friday and met a Forest Service snowmobile unit that was preparing to search the area, according to the statement.
β€œThey had become disoriented in the blizzard conditions the night before, and ended up in the Silver Lake area,” according to the statement. β€œThey were able to get into a cabin where they spent the night, hiking out this morning.”

An adorable video captures the moment a little brother rushed to the rescue of his older sister as she was in the midst of a wrestling competition after he appeared to believe she was in an actual fight.
The wrestling match between Ruby Lewis, 5, and her opponent took place in Columbia City, Indiana, earlier this week, but was interrupted when Ruby's 2-year-old brother, Jash, rushed onto the mat and attempted to step in and save his sister.
Crystal Lewis, the mother of the siblings, told the Indianapolis Star that Jash "just took off like lighting" when he saw his sister in trouble.
The mother added that she feels happy that the moment between her children is making others smile.
"It's nice to share a laugh, something that can just make you smile instead of be like, 'Oh my gosh, I can't believe this is the world that we're living in today,'" she told the Indianapolis Star.
The video was posted on Facebook by the mother of Ruby's opponent, who wrote, "When the girl you're wrestling has a tough little brother, don't mess with his sister."
The heartwarming footage quickly went viral on social media, garnering over 400,000 views in less than a week.
