Growing up as an only child, you don’t have any siblings to give you the nitty-gritty details about sex. Sure, my mom kindly presented me with an illustrated edition of Where Did I Come From? when I was in elementary school, but even then the booked struck me as wholesome and G-rated. To get the real dirt, I had two options: A) Alyssa, the delinquent with flaming red hair who lived across the street; or B) HBO’s Sex and the City.
Of course, as a nine-year-old, I wasn’t allowed to watch the show when it first aired. But whenever my mom left me alone, I’d pop in a Blockbuster VHS and eagerly watch Carrie, Charlotte, or Samantha’s latest sexcapade. (Miranda? No, thanks). I inhaled one episode after another the way Carrie feasted on cupcakes from the Magnolia Bakery in Greenwich Village.
One episode from Season 1 particularly stuck with me: “The Turtle and the Hare.” It’s the one in which Charlotte, initially averse to the idea of sex toys, gets hooked on the vibrating “Rabbit.” I didn’t really know what the Rabbit was, just that it was the source of Charlotte’s newfound state of perpetual bliss. Something so cute and pink and magical could only be fictional, right?
As I got older, about 13 or 14, my mom and I began to watch the later seasons together. Without flinching, we watched Samantha blow the FedEx guy, Miranda get jizzed on at an orgasm seminar, and Charlotte use a roll of stamps to test the functionality of her husband’s penis. Carrie had become a heroine to me: smart, free, and totally imperfect. But when it came to real-life sex, my mom and I never spoke about it, unless you count the “be safe and choose wisely” talks that routinely occur between a mom and her teenage daughter.
As far as I was concerned, my mom was asexual. She’d ask me after one of my dates if the boy I went out with was a good kisser, and I’d just shrug. Sometimes she missed a reference to an explicit act in a movie and asked me what it was. Again, I’d shrug. I was determined not to acknowledge that my mom was sexual in any way.
Then, one day, all that changed. While searching the floor of my mom’s bedroom for my missing Thera band, something under her bed caught my eye: a Ziploc bag strangely hidden in the shadows. Curious, I reached for it and pulled the plastic bag toward me. When I saw what was inside, my stomach dropped. There it was, in all its pink glory, the holy grail of Sex and the City —the Rabbit.
All I could think was, “Why a Ziploc!? You pack my sandwiches in those!” The glass had been shattered. My mom was undeniably a sexual being. Not only that, she was an owner of THE RABBIT.
As years went by and I began to have my own sexcapades, the dialogue between my mom and me gradually opened, and I’d like to think it was partly because of my little (five-inch) discovery. I no longer freeze when she asks me about a certain guy or when she asks those awkward questions while we’re watching a movie. (“He wants her to sit on his what?” )
In fact, a couple of years ago, I slipped into her bedroom and, lowering myself to the floor, peeked once again under her bed. At first, I was relieved to see the Rabbit was either gone or more properly stashed away. But then—I don’t know—I felt kind of sad. Anything that makes a woman as happy as the Rabbit made Charlotte, I hoped my mom still had in her possession.
I guess I’ll find out once she reads this.

Finding the best vibrator for you can be an intimidating process, especially if you’re not entirely sure what your needs are (you know, besides the obvious). After all, a vibrator’s not like a sweater or a pair of jeans—you can’t return it if it’s not the right fit.
Still, they’re worth experimenting with—not just for your own pleasure and self-discovery, but for your health. That’s right—a nationally representative sample of 2,056 women aged 18 to 60 concluded that vibrator use is positively correlated with sexual health and lower levels of sexual pain. Vibrator users were significantly more likely to have had a gynecologic exam during the past year, and those who had used one recently reported higher sexual functioning. “Vibrator use is associated with higher levels of desire, arousal, lubrication, satisfaction, and orgasm,” says Jess O’Reilly , host of the @SexWithDrJess Podcast .
So consider building up your collection the highest form of self-care.
We consulted expert input from O’Reilly, Dawn Michael , a certified sexuality counselor; Holly Richmond, certified sex therapist and head of the advisory board for
“My clients still rave about the Hitachi Magic Wand,” says O’Reilly. “ For women who like powerful vibrations and a longer handle for manipulation, this will continue to be one of the best vibrators for women for years to come .” It features four vibration patterns and the rechargeable version can run to three hours on a single charge.
Investing in a vibrator can be costly, and that’s an understandable concern if you’re not 100% convinced that sex toys are for you. This G spot vibrator from SKYN has a lot of the same features as high-end vibes, but is much more affordable. It’s water-resistant and latex-free, and has up to 20 different vibrating speeds. You can also enjoy it for up to four hours before needing to recharge. Reviewers rave about its “great lifespan” and ease of use. “This is a great toy for the price,” one wrote.
“In the ‘sexpert’ community, the Vesper by Crave is all the rage, as it doubles as a necklace and is our ‘little secret’ for those in the know,” says O’Reilly. The undercover clitoral vibrator hangs on a 26-inch stainless steel chain , and is splash-proof for easy cleaning with soap and water. It also includes a USB cable for recharging and a handy storage pouch.
The Rave is ergonomically designed to vibe against your G-spot internally and beyond . “You can hold it loosely in your hand as you allow it to rock against your G-spot and increase the intensity of the vibrations as your arousal heightens,” says O’Reilly. You can also rock it back and forth, swipe from side to side across the G-spot, gently pull it in and out, rotate it gently toward the sides of your vagina and pulse firmly as it vibrates—the possibilities are endless. Plus, it’s app controlled—meaning long-distance lovers can join in on the fun.
This wand-style vibrator offers up a lot of different options for just $20. It has eight speeds and 20 patterns, making it easy to find a setting that’s right for your needs. It’s also swathed in soft silicone and is quiet, so no need to worry about disturbing other people in your house when you use it. The whole thing is USB rechargeable. One reviewer called the vibrator “perfect,” pointing out that it’s “super affordable,” “a pretty good size,” and “has many unique vibration patterns.”
“Many vibrators are overstimulating and can be intimidating,” says Megwyn White , New York-based sexual wellness expert and director of education at Satisfyer . “With its sleek design and shape more resemblant of a beauty tool than a vibrator, the Satisfyer Pro 2 leads the charge for discreet sexual wellness tools.” There are 11 different levels of air-pulse, suction-like stimulation to choose from (which are intended to imitate oral sex), and its removable silicone head is super-easy to keep clean. “It can also be used underwater—perfect for your shower or bath—and is practically silent when in use,” says White. “It’s a must-have discreet tool, even for women who shy away from this type of thing .”
The original couples’ vibrator , We-Vibe Sync, can be worn during P-V sex. “The small, flat arm is inserted into the vagina to vibe against the G-spot,” says O’Reilly. “The other arm vibes against the clitoral head, shaft, and hood on the outside, while the penis slides inside to enjoy the vibrations too.” It can be worn in multiple sex positions and adjusted to fit your angles , as well as controlled from the remote or We-Connect app on your phone. Even cooler, the latest version features a “squeeze remote” that responds to your clenches and flexes. The tighter you clench around the control’s shaft, the stronger the vibration gets.
This was one of the first high-quality clitoral vibrators that c hanged the delivery of sensation from vibration to suction, which has been a game-changer for women . “The Womanizer gives women who are extraordinarily sensitive to vibrating toys a different option, and in some ways more closely mimics what a partner would do with their mouth,” says Holly Richmond, certified sex therapist and head of the advisory board for Ella Paradis . “Anecdotally, my female clients have reported having strong orgasms without the potential to numb out, as they’ve experienced with other vibrators.”
Just like its name, the Lovelife Cuddle Mini is a non-threatening toy. Don’t be fooled by its sweet appearance, though—this vibrator delivers. The small toy can be used to target your clitoris and nipples, and comes with seven different vibrations. Made of silicone, the vibe can go for 90 minutes without needing a new charge. “The pulsing vibration settings are awesome if you can’t take constant friction,” one reviewer wrote. “I can usually get two or three short solo sessions in before having to charge,” another said.
This lipstick-style bullet vibrator is perfect for travel. “It’s the size and shape of a lipstick, so it’s quite discreet and can fit in pretty much any purse ,” says Zhana Vrangalova , Ph.D., LELO sexpert and professor of human sexuality at New York University. Unlike many similar vibrators, the Mia 2 is USB rechargeable, and powerful enough to use over clothes. It features six vibration modes and is also 100 percent waterproof. Bonus: It holds a charge for four hours.
Je Joue’s G-Spot vibrator is sleek and simple, and sometimes that’s just what you need. The vibe has a curved tip that’s designed to hit your G spot, but can also be used on your clitoris. Five speeds and seven patterns give you plenty of options to work with. The vibrator is quiet and waterproof, so you can use it just about anywhere. “This little thing is amazing for what it gives out,” one reviewer wrote. Another said it rumbles “like thunder” but is “quiet as a mouse.”
The Ora 3 is an oral sex toy , so women who are shy or uncomfortable about receiving cunnilingus can use this toy to experiment with different sensations. This can help you see what it feels like to have an orgasm from oral stimulation without pressure or feeling like you have to rush. “The sensation is like a tongue that goes around the clitoris rather than direct contact , creating a buildup to orgasm without overstimulation,” says Michael. The toy is waterproof, rechargeable, and made of medical grade silicone.
Unlike rabbit vibes of yore that often missed the mark with external clitoral stimulation, the We-Vibe Nova’s out arm flexes to ensure direct stimulation of the hood, shaft, and head of the clitoris externally . “The inner arm curves upward against the G-spot, and both arms provide rumbly sensations to send pleasure messages to the brain via multiple nerve pathways,” says O’Reilly. The result? A more powerful orgasm.
This compact sex toy offers deep, rumbly vibrations that are typically achieved with a wand vibrator. The tapered tip is soft and pliable, making it perfect to use all over your body (including on the vulva). It’s especially effective if you like to finish off with direct vibrations against the head of the clitoris, says O’Reilly.
This tiny-but-mighty vibrator slips right over your fingers. Water-resistant, made with medical grade silicone, and fit with three speeds , it’s perfect for beginners, couples, and anyone who wants to engage in some self-love without a bulky toy. “We have tried numerous vibrators,” one reviewer wrote. “The Fin is the best so far. It allows intimate contact especially in the missionary position.”
When you want some internal stimulation without doing a lot of work, the Lyla 2 is where it’s at. “It’s a hands-free, wearable, remote-controlled vibrator that you can pop inside your vagina or anus and then use the remote to get the exact kinds of stimulation you want ,” says Vrangalova. Or, give the remote to your partner and have them tease you—at home, or anywhere else. It can be used externally, too.
The NJoy PureWand is designed well for stimulating different areas of the vagina, and is made of stainless steel that’s highly durable and can be cleaned easily. “Based on our observations, most women respond better to rhythmic larger movement stimulation, versus very fast tiny movements from vibration,” says Steve McGough, an associate professor of clinical sexology and director of research and development at Women and Couples Wellness . “We’ve seen better results for helping women achieve orgasm vaginally using a non-vibrating firm, correctly-shaped device like this one .” Bonus: The PureWand is compatible with all personal lubricants and has excellent temperature retention, so you can heat or cool it for extra stimulation.
The Tiger Vibe G5 is an internal vibrator with textured ridges along its shaft to increase tension during thrusts . It’s curved to target your G spot, and also has a wide base for clitoral stimulation. The waterproof vibe is covered in silicone and offers up six different vibrational speeds, as well as six patterns. One reviewer called the vibrator “just perfect,” pointing out that they orgasmed, “in seconds.” Another said it’s a versatile toy, and can be used “internally, externally, or like an improved rabbit.”
Feel like splurging on a vibrator? The Lelo Insignia is a worthy investment. It’s encased in super-soft silicone and has an internal and external vibrator for maximum pleasure . Choose from 12 different vibrations, whether you’re in bed, in the shower, or on the road. A nice perk: The Soraya 2 has a travel lock function, so no need to worry about it going off when you’re moving through airport security. “It’s a multiple orgasm machine,” one five-star reviewer wrote. “I love that the outer arm is flexible, and that the handle is looped, so I have perfect control over how to move it,” another said. “I can safely say this is one investment I’m glad I made.”
Fun Factory’s Volta doesn’t look like most other vibrators. It has a split tip design to deliver a range of sensations, from light taps to intense thumps. The vibe is meant to be used externally, either on your clitoris, your partner’s penis, or your nipples, and it features six levels of vibration, along with six different patterns. “I wish everyone had one of these,” one reviewer wrote. “It can do so many things, and does them all so well.” Another said, “This toy surprisingly makes an excellent couples toy, it fits effortlessly between two bodies.”

7 Powerful, Easy-to-Use Vibrators for Older Women

Self-pleasure doesn't have an age limit!
The need to pleasure yourself doesn't stop once you reach a certain age , though many people believe otherwise.
Well into your prime and beyond, masturbation is still something you'll get the urge to do. While there's no better toy than your hand, a vibrator can always amplify that orgasmic sensation.
Unfortunately, many vibrators weren't created with older women in mind (which is why we're patiently waiting for the Grace and Frankie vibrator to be a real thing). That being said, there are plenty on the market that better stimulate women over the age of 50.
Scroll below to find the best one for your needs!
This is one of the best vibrators for direct clitoral stimulation, especially because it has a variety of intensities, which works for women who need a little bit more than they used to in order to get off. The longer handle is also a helpful function that allows it to stay in position.
For those of you with limited mobility, this is one of the most accessible vibrators you'll come across. Because it uses a remote control, it makes it that much easier to use than a vibrator with various buttons you need to fidget with.
A vibrator with a firm grip is essential when you get older, which is why this one is perfect with its indented handle. You can even purchase various head attachments to personalize your experience.
