A video showing a mother from Trinidad and Tobago whipping her 12-year-old daughter with a belt for sharing sexually explicit photos of herself on Facebook has gone viral, sparking a national conversation in the island nation about corporal punishment.
Last Sunday, a video was posted on Facebook showing Helen Bartlett, a mother of four from Point Fortin, beating her sobbing daughter while hurling profanities at her.
The six-minute clip, which depicts Ms Bartlett raining blows on the 12-year-old girl, who whimpers in pain and cowers from the belt, has been shared more than 43,000 online.
Public shaming: Helen Bartlett (right), a mother of four from Trinidad and Tobago, shared a video online showing her beating her 12-year-old daughter for inappropriate behavior
Unsettling: The six-minute clip shows the mother whipping the girl with a belt as she whimpers in pain
Discipline or abuse: The clip has gone viral on social media and sparked a public debate about corporal punishment
The unsettling clip has left viewers divided, with some people justifying the mother's actions, while others calling it child abuse.
On Wednesday, Bartlett’s daughter and her older sister uploaded another video in response to the controversy, expressing support for their mother.
Looking into the camera, the two girls said Bartlett was a good mother who wanted to protect her child from teenage pregnancy, or worse.
When Helen Bartlett was interviewed by a local radio station earlier this week, the woman declared she was 'prepared to go to jail' to set her wayward young daughter on the right path, Trinidad Express reported.
Asked if she regretted her actions, Ms Bartlett, who has three girls and a boy, said she stood by her mode of discipline, but she was sorry that the video intended to shame her 12-year-old has gained such notoriety.
Ms Bartlett explained that since the girl's father, a police officer, left them, the child has been unmanageable.
The single mother added that she has exhausted all avenues trying to keep her daughter on the straight and narrow, including seeking counselling for her.
And according to Ms Bartlett, the 12-year-old's father has been of no help, telling the girl that he wanted nothing to do with her.
No alternative: Ms Bartlett later explained that her daughter has been acting acting since pre-school, and that she has exhausted all avenues trying to set her on the right path
Defiant: The single mother said she is prepared to go to jail for meting out corporal punishment to her wayward daughter
What sparked the brutal beating last Sunday in the Bartletts’ apartment was a salacious text message exchange between the 12-year-old girl and a boy her age, who was trying to convince her to have sex with him.
After the mother read the messages, she accessed her underage daughter's Facebook profile and discovered photos of the girl posing 'seductively' in her underwear.
Helen Bartlett explained that while her child is pretty and intelligent, she has a low self-esteem and is susceptible to peer pressure.
Her worst fear is that if the 12-year-old continues down this road, one day she is either going to come home pregnant, or will end up dead on the streets.
On mom's side: The 12-year-old came out in defense of her mother, saying in a counter video that she knows Bartlett loves he dearly
‘I stand firmly by my decision. I will go to jail for it,’ the woman said. ‘I know people are saying the authorities should charge me for abuse.’
Asked about her daughter's state of mind following the release of the controversial video, Ms Bartlett said the girl was coping 'unexpectedly well.'
In her response video, the daughter said she knew her mother loves her dearly, and she reassured the viewers that has no intention of killing herself because she loves herself 'too much.'
The girl has not been to school since the video went viral, and her mother said she has been preparing her for potential bullying and mockery from her classmates.
Defending Helen Bartlett's old-school brand of discipline, her older daughter explained in her counter video that with their father not around anymore, there is no male figure in the family to set her out-of-control sibling straight.
‘The road my sister was heading down was teenaged pregnancy,’ she said. ‘She saw this as a way she could stop it. My sister has learnt her lesson.’
Speaking out for the first time since the incident, the 12-year-old at the center of the firestorm said: ‘I am very sorry for bringing shame on you and the family. I know you love me dearly. And I love you dearly, too.’
The girl then appealed to other children her age, urging them to watch the video of her beating and learn from it.
Extreme measures: The mother stated that she decided to teach her daughter a lesson so that one day she wouldn't come home pregnant or end up dead
‘You are a special piece of God’s puzzle,’ the girl said. ‘And don’t let what happen to me happen to you also.’
The incident sparked a heated public debate in Trinidad and Tobago over the issue of corporal punishment, and whether Helen Bartlett’s actions displayed in the video crossed the line.
According to Jamaica Observer , Trinidad and Tobago's Ministry of Gender, Youth and Child Development has weighed in on the issue, calling on parents to use 'non-physical forms of discipline.'

AN AMERICAN mother launched a brutal attack on her daughter on Facebook Live for everyone to see. But some are defending her.
WARNING: Contains graphic language and violence
IT STARTS with what appears to be a piece of plywood. Then she begins slapping and punching relentlessly with her bare hand. For four minutes, her daughter cowers in the corner. Her legs, stomach and face are all targets.
A mother has divided the United States after beating her 16-year-old daughter in a Facebook Live video that was posted over the weekend for allegedly acting as a “thot” (otherwise known as “that hoe over there”).
Shanavia Miller has been identified as the mother who took over her daughter Nia’s Facebook page and posted the video that showed her repeatedly beating and yelling abuse at the 16-year-old.
The full video can be viewed on Facebook .
As Nia retreats into another room, Shanavia appears to direct the cameraman to follow her, where the beating continues.
“You nasty as hell,” she shouts as Nia cries and holds her hands to her face.
The beating was sparked after Shanavia saw a photo of daughter Nia posing provocatively in a towel next to an unidentified boy. A photo she believed was taken in her Savannah, Georgia, home. Shanavia was appalled her daughter was sharing such private details on social media sites.
Therefore, she believed, the punishment should fit the crime.
“That’s my f***ing Facebook page now,” Shanavia exclaims to the camera.
“Now, I’m gonna need you all to send this viral. Please share this, cause I’m not done. More to come.
“You got me f***ed up. Acting like a clown. Look at you, everybody see you now, Look at you. Look at you,” Shanavia screams as she puts the camera in her daughter’s face.
“You think that sh*t's cute. You forget I know motherf***ers. Did you forget that? It’s social media. You got me looking bad like I ain’t no good mother f***ing parent. I do my best! I do my f***ing best!”
A later post that appears to be written by Shanavia, who has not been charged, says “I love my daughter with all my heart.” But she says her daughter won’t “disrespect me.”
In a later post, Nia explains she had not told her mother she was sexually active and was “gonna wait a couple days to see how I was gone tell her”.
Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department say Nia told them she feels safe in the home.
“Our special victims unit looked into the case and officers talked to the mother and daughter,” Darnisha Green, a spokeswoman for the department, told The Washington Post .
“Although the daughter said she felt safe in the home, the case has been referred to the Department of Family and Children Services.”
Police spokesman Sonny Cohrs says there are no charges at this time, and a spokeswoman for that agency, Susan Boatwright, would neither confirm nor deny involvement in the case, citing privacy laws.
Yet while many have criticised Shanavia for her actions, others seem to be on her side, believing kids need strict discipline in order to learn valuable life lessons.
I didn't make it through 30 seconds of Shanavia Miller beating her daughter, Nia Green, on Facebook Live. Jesus.
I don't feel bad for #NiaGreen at all. That looks like a whooping well deserved.😌
If yall think Nia green got brutally beaten by her mother then all I got to say is yall ain't never had a as whooping before 💯

A twenty-one-year-old encourages her mother to show off her body and dress provocatively in sMothered.
Tonight's episode of the TLC show focuses on mother and daughter and self-proclaimed 'besties' Sandra, 45, and Mariah, 21, who do everything together.
And when it comes to taking her clubbing on the Las Vegas strip, Mariah picks out the perfect dress for her parent - much to the dismay of dad, Adrian.
'It's still PG, we need to get it X-rated,' says Mariah, making some adjustments to make the outfit more revealing.
'Before me moved back in with my dad, me and my mom used to walk around naked if we wanted to. Now we can't do that anymore.'
Mariah (left), 21, from the US, encourages her mother Sandra (right), 45, to show off her body and dress provocatively in tonight's episode of TLC's  sMothered
Mariah's father Adrian thinks their mother-daughter relationship is too close and far from normal and says: 'I can see how Sandra and Mariah have gone overboard. Even with their dress'
In the show, which examines the relationships between mothers and daughters, asking the question 'how close is too close?' Mariah explains:
'So me and my mom are extremely alike. Things that we do that other moms and daughters don't do together is party together, go out together, club together, and when I was old enough we got our boobs done together. I'm turning 21, and I want my mom to come and be 21 with me.'
Sandra adds: 'I think people misunderstand our relationship but we have never cared. This is our movie and everyone's just extras.'
Mariah admits that she pushes her mom to be 'out there,' spontaneous and to spend as much time with her as possible.
Tensions rise during their dinner when Adrian (right) confronts Mariah and Sandra over their Vegas dresses once again
Mariah (pictured) says how her dress sense and influencer status give her a feeling of empowerment and says: 'My social media is my alter ego. It's like my sexy side'
Mariah often keeps her 426k Instagram followers up-to-date on her day-to-day life (pictured) by sharing regular selfies
But Mariah's father Adrian thinks that their mother-daughter relationship is too close and far from normal.
'I can see how Sandra and Mariah have gone overboard,' he says. 'Even with their dress.'
As Sandra herself admits, her daughter started pushing the boundaries with her dress sense the older she got.
'When Mariah turned 19 she started dressing a little bit more provocative,' she says.
But for Mariah, her clothing choices and influencer status give her a feeling of empowerment.
'My social media is my alter ego,' she explains. 'It's like my sexy side. When my mom first saw my photo shoots on my social media, she was very shocked. But I explained to her that those pictures empower me and I'm comfortable in my own skin.'
Mariah admits that she pushes her mother (pictured) to be 'out there,' spontaneous and to spend as much time with her as possible
Sandra (pictured) isn't shy when it comes to her Instagram account either, and regularly shares revealing photos with her 17k followers
In another picture uploaded to her social media page, mother Sandra can be seen donning a figure hugging red dress while taking a selfie in the mirror
Speaking of the first time her mother saw her photo shoots on social media, Mariah says: 'She was very shocked. But I explained to her that those pictures empower me and I'm comfortable in my own skin'
