Das Verhältnis zwischen Cornelia und ihrem erwachsenen Sohn Barbu ist extrem gestört. Verzweifelt versucht sich der Sohn der erdrückenden Fürsorge seiner Mutter zu entziehen und erscheint nicht einmal auf deren Geburtstagsfeier. Als Barbu jedoch einen Verkehrsunfall verursacht, bei dem ein kleiner Junge stirbt, scheint er wieder auf seine Mutter angewiesen zu sein. Cornelia setzt alle Hebel in Bewegung, um ihr einziges Kind vor dem Gefängnis zu bewahren. Das rumänische Familiendrama überzeugt durch seine dichte Inszenierung, seinen psychologischen Realismus und die hervorragenden Schauspieler. Vor allem Luminita Gheorghiu liefert eine überwältigende Darstellung als übergroße Mutterfigur, die nichts unversucht lässt, um ihren Sohn vor den Konsequenzen seiner Tat zu schützen. Doch Calin Peter Netzer thematisiert hier nicht nur den innerfamiliären Mutter-Sohn-Konflikt, sondern wirft auch einen kritischen Blick auf die gesellschaftlichen Zustände im heutigen Rumänien. Und obwohl MUTTER & SOHN keine durchgängig positive Identifikationsfigur,anbietet, gelingt dem Gewinner der Berlinale 2013 doch das Kunststück sein Publikum zu fesseln und zu berühren. Ein Glanzpunkt des europäischen Kinos.

Dieser in vielerlei Weise „nicht gewöhnliche“ rumänische Film des Regisseurs Calin Peter Netzer bezieht den Zuschauer von Anfang bis Ende in das auf der Leinwand Geschehene ein. Erzählt wird, wie eine erfolgreiche Architektin der rumänischen Oberschicht um ihren erwachsenen Sohn, der ihr entglitten ist, kämpft. Nichts Menschliches ist ihr fremd, nahezu jedes Mittel recht. Dass Barbu, der Sohn, schuldhaft einen tödlichen Unfall verursacht hat, bietet Cornelia einen neuen, den Zuschauer auch beunruhigenden Ansatz, den „Entglittenen“ zurück zu holen.
Der Film schildert eindrucksvoll individuelle, familiäre und zugleich gesellschaftliche Konflikte. Die Kamera ist ständig in Bewegung, bewirkt zuweilen dokumentarische Eindrücke. Zum Beispiel bei Cornelias Geburtstagsfeier: Hier könnte auch ein Gast ein Amateurvideo aufgenommen haben. Mutig kommt unmittelbarste Nähe zustande. Nichts wird geschönt. Eine ganz besondere Ästhetik des Normalen!
Einen starken Eindruck hinterlässt die Sorgfalt bei der Auswahl und Gestaltung unterschiedlichster Details. Da stört die Protagonistin das Haar im Bad, das versehentlich mitgegriffene Kleidungsstück der Freundin des Sohnes wird sofort weggeworfen, geraucht wird immer wieder und in den unterschiedlichsten Situationen . Die Dialoge und Monologe - oft kammerspielartig in Szene gesetzt - werden von der Kamera unterschiedlich eingefangen, selten als Schuss, häufig als Riss. Man hört den Sprecher, sieht den Hörer. Auch hier sind es immer wieder „Kleinigkeiten“, die Wichtiges verkörpern. So wird am Ende des Filmes deutlich, dass die Mutter nicht mehr wie zu Beginn anonym von einem Kind als „dem Kleinen“ spricht, sondern den Bruder des getöteten Jungen mit seinem Namen nennt.
Es gibt mehrere Szenen, die man als rationale oder emotionale Höhepunkte bewerten kann. Da werden die Polizisten, die den Unfall korrekt aufnehmen wollen, dem Zuschauer erst sympathisch und dann: welch‘ Veränderung beim späteren Protokoll. Tief berührt auch das Gespräch zwischen der Mutter und der Freundin des Sohnes, als letztere Einblicke in ihr Schicksal und das Verhalten des Sohnes gewährt. Unbedingt erwähnt sei auch noch, wie die Kamera einfängt, dass am Schluss des Filmes nicht nur die Mutter Einsichten gewonnen hat, sondern auch der Sohn die Umklammerung der Mutter verlässt.
Was dieses Filmkunstwerk immanent besonders wertvoll macht, ist die Auswahl der Figuren, ihre schauspielerische Intensität von den Neben- bis zu den Hauptrollen. Über manche, erwähnt sei als ein Beispiel die Haushaltshilfe, möchte man noch mehr erfahren, andere wie die Mutter und der Vater des getöteten Jungen beeindrucken durch ihre überzeugende Natürlichkeit. Faszinierend ist aber natürlich insbesondere die schauspielerische Leistung der Luminita Gheorghiu als Mutter.

Diese Frau wirkt sofort unsympathisch, herrisch und Besitz ergreifend. Und sie ist es auch. Cornelia gehört zur Sorte monströses Muttertier, das seine Brut mit Zähnen und Klauen verteidigt. Mit ihren Freundinnen redet sie am liebsten über ihren Sohn Barbu. Mitten in der Operprobe erfährt sie, dass der Filius mit überhöhter Geschwindigkeit ein Kind totgefahren hat und begibt sich schnurstracks auf die Polizeiwache, droht mit ihren wichtigen Beziehungen, fordert eine Änderung des Protokolls und ordnet alles nach ihren Vorstellungen. Mit aller Macht will sie ihr Kind vor Strafe schützen. Korruption ist alltäglich im heutigen Rumänien. Dass ein Polizist sie später um einen Gefallen bittet oder der Zeuge viel Geld für eine neue Aussage verlangt, nimmt sie hin. Sie bestimmt die Spielregeln, bis ihr Sohn sich der erdrückenden Liebe verweigert, den Kontakt abbrechen möchte.
Calin Peter Netzer, in Rumänien geboren und in Deutschland aufgewachsen, seziert wie unter dem Brennglas ein Land, in dem die jetzige Oberschicht wie die frühere Nomenklatura das Sagen hat, Menschen der Unterschicht weniger wert zu sein scheinen. Die reiche Lady, die sich mit Statussymbolen umgibt, glaubt, jeden kaufen zu können. Ein Irrtum wie sie sehr spät merkt. Luminita Gheorghiu verkörpert die in Pelz gehüllte und mit Schmuck behängte Kämpferin, für die es nur Sieg geben kann, kalt und pragmatisch. Sobald man sich an die ständig bewegte und direkte Kamera gewöhnt hat, gewinnt das Psychodrama mit politischem Anspruch an Intensität, kristallisiert sich das Bild einer in ihrem Egoismus gefangenen und total berechnenden Frau heraus, die erst ganz am Ende einen Hauch von Mitgefühl zulässt.
