Girls run in my family, so I naturally thought when it was time for me to have children that I would have daughters. Well, as the Y chromosome will tell you, I'm lucky enough to be the mom of two boys. And spending special time with them is one of my favorite things. My little guys and I are always thinking up new mother-son bonding activities for our time together.
Having boys may have been a surprise, but it is one of the best things that could have happened to me. Being around my sons has let me experience things I probably wouldn't have, if I had daughters. (And I don't just mean deferring penis questions to my husband.) My baby boys are the most fun to hang out with, because they are always up for something new. It doesn't take much convincing to get them out of the house and into an adventure. It's been a wild ride so far, and I don't see it slowing down any time soon.
Being a boy mom is a hilarious, messy, and rewarding part of my life — I really can't imagine things any other way. I love it when I find an activity or experience that brings me closer with one (or both) of my boys. If you're a mom of boys like me, and looking for new things to do with your son, try something new with these 17 mother-son bonding activities.
Select a picture book series or one good chapter book to read together. Maybe you take turns reading aloud, or just read at the same time and talk about together. Either way, sharing in a story as mother and son will give you time together with loads of conversation.
What could be more fun than running around and trying to shoot each other with laser guns? Not too much. A fun way to spend an hour or two, laser tag will have you laughing together and gasping for breath from all the giggling.
Pack a picnic, for the park, play tourist in your own town, or enjoy a special dinner for two. It doesn't matter what you do as long as you get out and enjoy a day together having fun.
Fresh air and a little expanded energy makes for a great time. To make the activity even more enjoyable, bring along a book to help you identify the plants and creature you'll see on the way.
This may be one of those times when mom has to take one for the team and go see a show that your son wants to see. It may not be your favorite style of music, but the little guy will always remember mom taking him to a concert.
My boys always think it's a really cool day if I play video games with them. If you don't have a gaming system at home, you can visit an arcade neat you.
Head out to a nearby amusement park and get your adrenaline pumping. If he's not ready to take on the death-defying rides just yet, you can always play a game or two instead.
Pick a craft or fun project that you can complete together in an afternoon. Then sit back and admire your hard work.
Spend time together while helping others. Find a place that is kid-friendly to volunteer with your son for the day.
My boys love it when I show up at their school and surprise them with lunch. Of course, this may be less appealing to older sons who are "embarrassed" by you. If that's the case, go out for a special lunch on the weekend.
Keep a little correspondence going by passing notes back and forth to each other. Having your own secret mail system (like leaving them under pillows) feels like a private, special connection that only the two of your share.
Sneak out one dark night for a little mother-son star gazing. See if you can find constellations or have a contest to see who can find the brightest star.
Get into the kitchen together and make a meal for the rest of the family. Cooking together can be fun and creates a sense of teamwork between the two of you.
Maybe you don't have all the moves down for the whip and nae nae, or maybe you want to try indoor rock climbing. Learning something together always bring your closer, and gives you a chance to grow together in your new interest.
Create an activity that's just between you two. Maybe it's sneaking off for ice cream every Sunday or maybe you have a secret handshake. Sharing something special that no one else knows about will make your child feel extra special himself.
Find a destination that you can reach within an hour or two and venture out together on a mini road trip. Enjoy a new town or city for the day and head home full of memories.

Coming up with a plan for Mother’s Day can feel a bit daunting year after year. You want to plan something special to properly honor the occasion, but going out is so crowded and overpriced. And staying in isn’t every exciting, right? Not so fast: With a few Mother’s Day games on tap for your family gathering, you can turn a ho-hum holiday brunch or dinner into a lively, laugh-filled gathering sure to keep the crowd engaged and make cherished memories.
These Mother’s Day games for players of all ages are bound to become new traditions for your family for years to come. Some are time-honored classics — like limbo or charades — that require almost no prep or supplies. Others take some legwork to set up — like a holiday bake-off or all-about-mom bingo game — but the effort is sure to pay off with major crowd appeal. Still, others can be downloaded and printed instantly for cheap (or even free!), ready-made party games you can prep in a flash — and spend the rest of the time with your loved ones. Whatever you choose, all of these fun Mother's Day games can be set up right inside your own home — or just about anywhere.
Turn a favorite game from childhood into one that celebrates mom on Mother’s Day by whipping up a game of DIY mad libs. Customize a story about your mom — factual or fictional — but substitute key words for blanks. Under each blank, specify the part of speech (noun, verb, adjective, etc.) and let everyone fill in words of their choosing. When everyone’s done, read all the resulting stories out loud for some seriously humorous results.
If your family’s the karaoke type, give the activity a special Mother’s Day twist by choosing only from a catalogue of songs around the theme. Think The Shirelles’ “Mama Said,” Tupac’s “Dear Mama,” Kanye West’s “Hey Mama,” and Dolly Parton’s tribute to mom strength, “Coat of Many Colors.” Or pick from songs special to the mom you’re celebrating — maybe her favorite tunes, or her wedding song. No fancy equipment required for this one: In the absence of a proper karaoke machine, just grab a toothbrush as a microphone and belt out those tunes.
Make your own bingo cards for a personalized Mother’s Day game sure to keep the crowd laughing. Create grids on each card, and fill them with words and phrases related to mom: her favorite catchphrases, her dependable habits, the characteristics that define her. Designate a caller, and hand out prizes when winners fill their boards and call out “Bingo!”
Get your crew active and enthusiastic with this printable set of clues for a fun Mother's Day scavenger hunt.
This game will show everyone in the family just how much they call on mom for everything — all day, every day — and how they’d be lost without her. Give each person five safety pins at the beginning of the game. The rule of the game is that no one is permitted to say “mom.” Whoever hears another person say the word gets to steal one of their pins. The one with the most pins at the end wins.
Get the energy soaring with a good old-fashioned backyard sack race. Try moms against dads, or mom-kid relays — whatever pairings make sense for your group.
This age-old party game is completely free and requires nearly no prep. Just scribble some ides on strips of paper and toss them into a bowl. Instead of writing the names of movies, give it a Mother’s Day twist by jotting down topics specific to mom — like her catch phrase or her favorite vacation destination. Then, set a 60-second timer for the group to guess what each player is miming. (Hilarity will surely ensue.)
Add four games and activities to your Mother's Day celebration instantly with this printable game bundle. It includes a word search, word scramble, Mother's Day scattergories and an A-to-Z challenge.
Print out a sheet containing two columns. On one side, list famous moms from movies and TV shows: Carol Brady, June Cleaver, Claire Huxtable, Lucy Ricardo and Sophia Petrillo are among some ideas to get you started. On the other side, list the first names of the characters who played their fictional kids. Challenge your assembled group to try to match up all the pairs correctly.
Bake ahead a batch of plain sugar cookies or cupcakes, and then set out an array of decorating tools and supplies, challenging each person at the Mother’s Day gathering to design the best. Let mom be the judge, awarding prizes for the prettiest, funniest, fanciest or whatever categories you choose. Make your own rules for this one — the fun is in the baking… and the tasting!
If you liked the classic game show Family Feud , you'll love this printable Mother's Day version you can play at home!
How well do you really know mom? Print up a list of questions for the whole family to ask mom. And when she shares the answers, everyone will get to know her better than they ever did before. Ask her about her quirky hobbies, misadventures, favorite foods, and first date. Get as profound or as silly as is age-appropriate for your group — and walk away with a deeper understanding of the family’s shining star.
To prep this game, write the names of famous moms throughout history on small scraps of paper. These can be actresses, singers, political figures, history-making icons and more. Have each family member write the name on a post-it and stick it to their head. As you gather on Mother’s Day, family members must figure out the names on their tags by asking strategic questions of the others.
See who in the group knows mom best: Create a trivia game based on mom’s favorite things to do, favorite and least favorite holidays, most treasured keepsakes, firsts, fumbles, and cherished memories; include any details family members might already know if they’re really paying attention. Then ask family members to write down their best guesses on the trivia questions, and award prizes for who knows mom best.
Divide your crew into groups and send them on a treasure hunt. Set goals for the hunt around a theme — like finding objects for each letter of mom’s name, or finding items in her favorite color — and let the teams tackle the challenge. Gather some prizes for the winners — and don’t forget to take pictures of each group with their items for a lasting memory.
Give everyone a piece of paper and sit in a circle. Let each person write a line in a poem about mom. Then, pass the sheet to the next person to write the next line. When you finish the game, you’ll have a set of poems dedicated to mom, which you can bound together for her to keep and cherish. (Seem like a daunting creative task? Limit the poetry to haikus — so each person will only have to come up with five or seven syllables!)
Do you know how many diapers a typical mom changes by the time her baby’s second birthday rolls around? If you do, you have a head start on winning this printable quiz game, filled with Mother’s Day fun facts.
In this game, a player shares two statements derived from family memories or traditions — as over the top as possible — and one more that is false. (Wear your best poker face!) All of the other players then try to guess which one of them is the lie.
If your crew just can’t seem to separate from their phones, this is the perfect ploy to keep everyone engaged even without prying their devices from their hands. Each player checks their phone for characteristics on the printable list to earn points.
Pick two family members to hold the end of a broom handle or length of string or ribbon while all the others pass underneath it, bending backward precariously as the height gets lower and lower for each pass. The one who hangs on longest — and lowest! — without collapsing wins.

This mom is taking the birds and the bees talk to a whole new level.
Chloe Macintosh has created a guide called “First Time Sex Starter Kit” for her two teenage sons in a bid to help them — and other teens — properly prepare to lose their virginities.
The British-based entrepreneur recently launched Kama — a sexual wellness app designed to educate people of all ages on various aspects of eroticism.
The app features a special section for first-timers, which Macintosh was inspired to create with and for her sons — Felix, 16, and Elliott, 14.
“The content we wanted to put out there is more than some tips to put a condom on,” Macintosh told HuffPost. “It’s more relating to the experience and making it as relaxed and comfortable as possible.”
The kit currently takes the form of 20 different videos, in which Felix is seen talking to a sex therapist. They discuss topics from “dry humping” to “how to use your penis inside.”
Macintosh said she never spoke about intercourse with her own parents and wanted to take the stigma out of sex for her sons.
“After an initial period of resistance, Felix and Elliott started to become more used to the topic, and speaking about it became more and more normal,” the open-minded mama declared.
She told the publication it would be impossible for her sons to ignore sex, given that there are sex books, “toys” and “gadgets” scattered “everywhere” around their home.
Her boys began asking honest questions about sex, and their friends even had queries of their own. The pals wanted to know about initiating sex, choosing partners and asking for feedback from them.
The candid discussions helped Macintosh formulate the “First Time Sex Starter Kit.” She wanted the guides to include language used in teen conversations in order to make the kit more accessible and relatable.
According to HuffPost, the guide features advice on topics including oral sex, vaginal and anal penetration, hand jobs, fingering, consent and more.
Macintosh said much sex education learned in schools is not delivered in relatable language. She also alleged it is “heteronormative, binary and generally backwards and incomplete.”
She told the publication she is concerned that teens are now trying to learn about sex from online pornography, which presents an unrealistic and distorted view of intimacy.
The mom said she hopes her starter kit can plug a gap in the market.
“The fact that so many teens and young people go through the processes of dating and intimacy without proper guidance is not good enough and can be easily repaired,” she declared. “If we remove the taboo and shame from talking about sex, then authentic pleasure can come more naturally.”

Here we go again. When a picture of a mom and son in the bathtub with her son made its way around social media, the internet went crazy. Words like inappropriate, child pornography, and abuse infiltrated the comment sections of Facebook posts and forced everyone to hit the share button and call this mom out on her actions. And those who did not have as much of a problem with her in the bathtub with her son had a problem with someone taking the photo and posting. Let the judgment begin.
So the first question a lot of people probably asked was the age of the boy. He looked to be at least four or five
