“This is not happening, this is not happening, this is not happening,” Christine Smith recalls thinking after seeing her son led out of a courtroom in handcuffs, having just been sentenced to 18 months in prison and one year of probation after pleading guilty to possession of child pornography . Her son would also be required to register as a sex offender once released from prison for the sex offenses.
As a mother, she felt helpless. Her 21-year-old son was facing a lifetime requirement of sex offender registration. How would he find a job when he got out of prison? Where would he, legally, be allowed to live? Would he ever date? Who would marry and start a family with a convicted sex offender? Could he legally ever have a family of his own?
As the mother of a convicted sex offender, she also bears part of her son’s burden. She wonders if there will ever be a day when he won’t be considered to belong in the same category as rapists and child molesters. A sex crime conviction can divide and devastate families, can destroy marriages and friendships and can serve to alienate the convicted person for life.
There are almost 750,000 registered sex offenders in the United States. Some have the support of family, some do not. The existence of a support system – whether family or friends – may be one of the most effective pieces of rehabilitating a convicted sex offender and reducing the likelihood of reoffending.
“Isolation can be a breeding ground for depression and deviancy,” according to Nancy Irwin, a psychotherapist and sex offender treatment professional.
Mothers of convicted sex offenders are turning to online support groups to learn ways to cope with the overnight change that a child pornography conviction can cause to a family. Many are also becoming activists, speaking out against what seems to them like a harsh penalty. There is another side to the crackdown on penalties for sex offenses.
“Yes, what my son did was bad. Yes, he should be punished. But he doesn’t need to be punished for the rest of his life,” noted the mother of a 20-year-old man who served 10 months for downloading child pornography and faces another 15 as a registered sex offender.

According to court documents, bland was released from prison in 2012 where he has served time for lewd acts with a child under 14.
MADERA, Calif. -- Clutching her son by her side, the mother described to us what happened. She said they were in the laundry room of their apartment complex when a man came in, switched off the light, and then grabbed her son. He pulled the boy out of the room, but the mother hit him and freed her son-- and ran to a neighbor to call police.
"I think the mother did what any other parent would do. Your child is in danger, I think you definitely act out and take matters into your own hands and protect your child" said Mark Trukki, Madera Police Detective.
Police responded quickly and arrested Michael Bland.
According to court documents, Bland was released from prison in 2012 where he has served time for lewd acts with a child under 14. Police said he is a transient, who has been repeatedly arrested for failing to register as a sex offender, or 290 status, every 30-- days and other crimes.
"Within those years he's violated his terms of his 290 status several times, and has been arrested. He's also been arrested for various drug charges and vandalism charges within the city," said Trukki.
The boy's mother cried as she described the fear she felt as Bland grabbed her son-- the boy told us he was afraid.
"Yeah I was frightened that I would be taken away and I couldn't see my family anymore."
The boy was not physically injured.
Bland is being held in the Madera County Jail on charges of willful cruelty to a child and kidnapping.
The boy and his mother said they had never seen Bland before. He is expected to be arraigned in court Wednesday.

Personal narratives by people who have been harmed by oppressive sex offender registries.
As the mother of a registered sex offender, I am like all other Mom’s, worried about the effect of this registry on my Son’s well-being. I don’t understand how a one time offender can be required to register for life. Most every other felon is allowed to live their life after serving their time and probation.
Also, with my son, this case was not a violent event but is considered a tier III offense because the girl lied about her age. She created a fake My Space profile to hook up with men. My son went on what he thought was a date and ruined his life.
The SOR is necessary for predators of young children but there should be some type of scale as time goes by without additional offenses to allow a reduction in requirements and eventual removal from the registry. I understand as a violent offender he is not eligible for removal at this time. If he could get his tier reduced now at some point in the future, he could apply for removal from registry. If none of our efforts result in removal from the registry, we need to find out the process to move out of state or possibly out of the country.
My son is slowly slipping away and nobody really cares. It seems that if offenders take their own life or are re-incarcerated it’s just one less person you have to keep track of.
The communication in this program really needs to improve. At the beinning of Covid, he received notice that registry would be done online. Once they determined that in person registration would start again, they did not notify him. He is now being charged for non-registry. Trooper King said he came by the house and asked Greg if he knew how to register. He has been registering for over 10 years. Why did he just not say that registration was not completed correctly and he is in danger of being arrested? Why didnt the online process give an error if not allowed. They also said he completed some fields incorrectly so they could see he attempted.
I will say most visits are done first thing in the morning and I generally have to wake Greg up when they come by the house. He has given up on work, friends and any kind of social life as he is too tired of explaining his situation since every time things don’t work out he falls deeper into depression.
Anyone with common sense could tell that Greg did not intentionally miss his registration. He did not leave town or go on the run. He was at home and is always here when anyone stops by.
His next court date is in August and of course he is concerned but also very unmotivated to try and help himself get out of this mess by asking for a court appointed attorney.
He needs help to get his life back on track.

A Tennessee mom chased off a sex offender who reportedly broke into her home and was found wearing only her daughter’s new pair of shoes.
"I chased him with these sticks ‘cause had I got a hold of him, I would have beat him," Daphne Crowley told WVLT , while holding up a pair of sticks. "But he ran down the street back into the pathway."
Crowley said she returned to her Knoxville home on Dec. 19 and was waiting for her daughter to open the front door. Once she was in her apartment, she realized that a naked man was also inside and only wearing a pair of shoes Crowley had purchased as a Christmas present for her daughter.
"I’m calm now, but at the time I was literally shaking and cried because it’s scary. You think these people are in your house and they are sex offenders and you have your kids running around and you’re thinking you’re safe," said Crowley.

She told her daughter to call 911 while she chased the suspect out of the apartment.
Officers soon arrived and found 27-year-old Michael Tyler Henegar in the woods near Crowley’s home, WVLT reported.
Police found Crowley’s grandchild’s toothbrush, toothpaste, and an impact drill with Henegar. He was arrested and charged for aggravated burglary.
Crowley believes this isn’t the first time he’s broken into her home and stolen her things based on what police found in his possession.
"Because when they found him, they found stuff that I knew I had bought and had been looking for," she said.
She believes he broke in through a patio door that her grandchild left open. She now plans to install a security system.
Henegar was wanted by the Knox County Sheriff’s Office at the time of his arrest for violating the sex offender registry and for failure to appear in violation of the sex offender registry.
