Mom Season 8, Episode 18 is airing Thursday on CBS . As well as bringing the first season of the show without Anna Faris to an end, the episode will also be the last-ever installment of the show, having been canceled back in February 2021.
With Faris being such an integral part of the CBS comedy for over 150 episodes, fans are hoping that Christy will make an appearance to mark the show ending, similar to the return recently made by America Ferrera for the end of Superstore .
All signs point to no, Anna Faris will not return.
The actor did not appear in the teaser for the season finale, and Christy was also missing from the synopsis for the episode, titled "My Kinda People and the Big To-Do." That logline reads: "Bonnie gains a new outlook on her sobriety after dealing with difficult news. Also, Jill and Andy take a big step in their relationship."
Fans hoping that the show is saving Christy's last appearance in the show as a big reveal are likely to be disappointed. A preview of the finale published by Variety on May 12 confirmed that Faris would not be back for the last-ever episode.
Instead, per the outlet Season 8, Episode 18 will focus on, "Bonnie [played by Allison Janney] receiving a new perspective on her sobriety after she is dealt some 'difficult' news, while also celebrating how far characters, such as [Jamie] Pressly's Jill, who learned she was pregnant in the penultimate episodes, have come."
Faris announced she was leaving the show in November 2020, in what was reportedly a sudden move that left the cast and crew reeling. The actor had not completed her contracted time on the show, which had her signed up until the end of Season 8.
Recently, Janney appeared on CBS Sunday Morning , where she discussed Mom coming to an end. The Oscar-winning actor (who won an Emmy for her work playing Bonnie) said: "It was a shock...I have my own theories, but I've been told not to express them."
Previously, Janney discussed Faris' exit on the recently canceled Ellen DeGeneres Show . She said: "It was very odd, she is very missed. Anna is missed and her character on the show is missed...We are just happy she is doing what she wants to do now and we are happy that we are still able to tell these stories about these great women in recovery."
At the start of the season, it was established that Christy had finally decided to live her dream and head to law school.
Faris announced her departure from the show in a social media post that read: "The past seven years on Mom have been some of the most fulfilling and rewarding of my career. I'm so thankful to [executive producer Chuck Lorre], the writers, and my amazing castmates for creating a truly wonderful work experience. While my journey as Christy has come to an end, allowing me to pursue new opportunities, I'll be watching next season and rooting for my TV family."
Though Faris will not return for one more visit to Mom, the show will have a new face in its finale. Young Sheldon and Two and a Half Men star Melanie Lynskey is set to guest as Shannon, a newcomer to Alcoholics Anonymous who struggles to open up to Bonnie and the rest of the group.
The Mom series finale airs May 13 at 9 p.m. ET / 8 p.m. CT on CBS. Season 8 is streaming on Paramount+ . Seasons 1 to 7 are streaming on Hulu .

It's the last call for Mom , but not before a final health scare, not to mention a heartwarming event to bring everyone—well, mostly everyone—together.
The CBS comedy aired its series finale on Thursday, May 13 to bring to an end its eighth and final season. During the episode, Bonnie ( Allison Janney ) and her pals gathered for the wedding between pregnant Jill ( Jaime Pressly ) and Andy ( Will Sasso ).
Bonnie had other things on her mind just before the ceremony, as her husband, Adam ( William Fichtner ), was diagnosed with lung cancer. Luckily, the hospital staff seemed confident about his chances, given that it was detected early.
Christy ( Anna Faris ), who was written off the show after season seven, did not make an appearance in the finale. However, when Shannon ( Melanie Lynskey ), a new member of the Alcoholics Anonymous group, was getting to know the women, Bonnie gave a brief update about her daughter.
"We're both sober, and we love each other," Bonnie explained. "She moved, but my point is my point."
The episode ends with the friends—including Tammy ( Kristen Johnston ), Wendy ( Beth Hall ) and Marjorie ( Mimi Kennedy )—gathering for a meeting right after the nuptials.
In her final speech to the group, Bonnie teared up while reflecting on how far she's come in the past eight years. "I kind of love me," she emotionally shared. "I love my husband, my daughter, my friends, my grandkids."
For the goodbye message in his final vanity card at the end of the episode, co-creator Chuck Lorre wrote in part, "For one hundred and seventy episodes, we wrapped jokes around hope. On behalf of everyone involved in the making of Mom , thank you for watching."
As fans know, it's been an eventful year for the beloved series. Back in September 2020, CBS announced that Anna would be exiting prior to season eight . The star said in a statement at the time, "The past seven years on Mom have been some of the most fulfilling and rewarding of my career."
When Mom returned for its season eight premiere in November, it was revealed that Christy had gone to Georgetown for law school , and Bonnie was struggling with being on her own again.
During a March appearance on The Late Late Show , Allison told James Corden that the sitcom was ending sooner than she and the team had hoped.
"I wish that we'd had at least another year for the writers to have that much time to ramp up to the ending," the Oscar winner admitted. "We sort of found out sooner than we thought we would. We thought, 'Surely, they're going to want more Mom .' And they decided not."
On May 13, Mom 's official Twitter account posted a video prior to the finale that showed the cast members thanking fans for the support.
"I would like to say a personal thank you to all of the Mom fans out there," Allison said. "It's been a great highlight of my life. I'm very honored and I thank you all for coming with us along this Mom journey."

Warning: This story contains spoilers from the Thursday, May 13, episode of Mom .
Keep coming back. After eight seasons of meaningful conversations, Mom ended with some final words of wisdom from Bonnie Plunkett ( Allison Janney ).
The series finale showed Bonnie learning that her husband Adam ( William Fichtner ) was diagnosed with lung cancer and dealing with the heartbreaking news amid plenty of other surprises. At the last minute, fellow recovering addict Jill ( Jaime Pressly ) and love interest Andy ( Will Sasso ) tied the knot and headed off to enjoy their happy ending.
The biggest surprise, though, was mother-daughter duo Shannon ( Melanie Lynskey ) and Jolene ( Rondi Reed ). Bonnie tries to help Shannon by convincing her to join AA, but she doesn’t expect to add her mother into the mix as well. Through it all, Bonnie didn’t have a drink and even gave an inspiring share about being grateful for the journey that got her where she is today.
Her message opened the door for the future, especially with Shannon and Jolene representing the new generation of complicated family relationships in the group. The duo was an obvious parallel to Bonnie and her own daughter, Christy Plunkett ( Anna Faris ), who was the one person missing from the emotional finale .
Faris, 44, announced her departure from the CBS show after seven years in 2020.
“The past seven years on Mom have been some of the most fulfilling and rewarding of my career,” she said in a statement to Us Weekly at the time. “I’m so thankful to Chuck [Lorre], the writers and my amazing castmates for creating a truly wonderful work experience. While my journey as Christy has come to an end, allowing me to pursue new opportunities, I’ll be watching next season and rooting for my TV family.”
It was revealed in the season 8 premiere that Christy moved to Washington, D.C. to attend Georgetown Law School and pursue her dreams with
