My mom loves to sunbathe and swim. She has no real inhibitions about her body, and is still in good shape for 45 so she regularly hangs out in the backyard sunbathing in her bikini and sometimes will just walk to the municipal pool about a block away in one. It's still warm enough here for her to do that.
This is the embarrassing part, near the beginning of summer she came back from sunbathing and cooked us dinner before changing out of her bikini. While I saw her cooking in that I got an erection. It freaked me out like nothing else, I ran into my room in a panic hoping it would die. It did pass but the fact it happened freaks me out. I was so shaken I couldn't even get an erection for about a week after that. I never told her or asked her to not wear one around me because I was so embarrassed and ashamed.
Now whenever she's in a bikini I make a beeline for my room. She seemed to notice something was up because recently she came to my room after that and knocked on the door and asked what was going on. She was still in her bikini so I tried to avoid directly looking at her which I think has given her the impression I have a problem with her specifically.
I haven't told anyone about this outside of this throwaway, I'm too embarrassed. Is this an overreaction? Is there a good way to ask her to please cover up a bit when in her bikini?
I don't think this is too weird. Dicks have a mind of their own sometimes, even more so when you're younger (I assume you're in your teens). I would recommend trying to make eye contact and not look down in the future.
I can't think of a good way to bring it up. Unless it becomes a reoccurring thing, I don't think you need to bring it up.
If your dad is around maybe talk to him. You could also try making a joke of it like mom walking around in skimpy clothes again....
Don't even trip, Kiddo. Emotions is right, dicks do have a mind of their own and its especially hard when your a teenager. Your logical reaction is the one that matters most because it reacted with disgust rather than real arousal, so its seems like you have nothing to worry in the 'Ol Oedipus Department.

Let's assume by how you worry so much about this, you're maybe mid teens.
It happens. Sometimes people just randomly get erections. Find ways around it. Like Emotions said, dicks just have a mind of their own. You can't control them to get hard or not get hard at will. Some people, like you, get visual triggers or thoughts that while there are no intentions at all behind it, just makes you get hard.
At least try to appreciate the fact that... everything works down there.
You’re a teen, this is TOTALLY normal. I’m a female and even I know that. It would only make it super weird if you were to tell your mom though bc that just opens a whole new can of worms of misunderstandings that could come into play. I’m guessing bc of this that you wouldn’t ever have another “pop up” even if you were to be around her dressed like this now anyway.
At least make your Mom know that you don’t think she’s like disgusting in a bathing suit bc we women tend to be self conscious and I hope she isn’t thinking that seeing her dressed that way grossed her out. Even if you and everyone knows she’s beautiful, women can still think they are fat or ugly deep down even if it seems crazy to everyone else.
Maybe just say that you have a girl you like at school or something that has a bikini like that and that it weirds you out to see her like that bc she is your Mom and you saw that girl one time and was attracted to her when she was dressed like that. Idk. Maybe that’s too confusing but it’s kind of the truth in a way but doesn’t go so far to say you had an erection to your Mom lol
TDLR Bottom Line: You are 110% normal and it could happen to anyone. And that’s a fact. (and don’t confront your Mom with the whole truth if you do at all)

I don’t think you should tell her or ask her to cover up. Your mom had the right to enjoy her home how she likes.
Just understand that erections can happen for so many reasons, or for no reason at all. I know it is embarrassing but as a step mom if my son got an erection in front of me I would NOT assume he was having sexual feelings about me, and I would not be too weirded out. In fact my biggest concern would be how it affected him to feel embarrassed about it. I’m sure your mom would think the same.
If you do need to talk why not try asking your dad or another male role model how they dealt with unwanted erections at your age? This is a totally normal thing that happens to all young men and I would not focus on the “who” in the situation. Also if your mom is worried just tell your her you are feeling a bit moody, but don’t really know why. She likely won’t press further if your behaviour normalizes after that.
Well, at least you know you are not gay? Physiology does not quite have the standards that the mind does. Personally, I'd say it is an overreaction to the body doing natural things. Just gotta rationalize it, and acknowledge that a physiological reaction does not necessarily mean you like someone that way.
Why does “at least you know you’re not gay” have a place here? You don’t know OP’s sexuality and it is phrased as if finding this out is something to be relieved about.
