Here we go again. When a picture of a mom and son in the bathtub with her son made its way around social media, the internet went crazy. Words like inappropriate, child pornography, and abuse infiltrated the comment sections of Facebook posts and forced everyone to hit the share button and call this mom out on her actions. And those who did not have as much of a problem with her in the bathtub with her son had a problem with someone taking the photo and posting. Let the judgment begin.
So the first question a lot of people probably asked was the age of the boy. He looked to be at least four or five, but it’s hard to say what his exact age is. Now, unfortunately for “tubmom,” in order for this behavior to have been acceptable by internet mafia standards, said boy should have been no older than two for her not to be condemned for her actions. Not to mention, from the looks of the photos, they both looked cramped and there wasn’t enough room for them to properly bathe. So not only were they inappropriate to everyone, there was a chance they were both not even fully washed. But I digress.
Seriously though, we can’t continue to think we can tell other parents how to raise their kids, or decide the decency line for everyone else. To each his own.
As long as there is no harm done to the child, there shouldn’t be any real issue. Like many others, I saw more harm done by posting the photo.
We know the type of backlash something like this could get so this was a bad decision by tubmom or the anonymous photographer (maybe dad?). Truthfully, I highly doubt there was anything inappropriate going on, and it really did just look like she was taking a bath with her child. The exposed boob that was covered was probably a bit much. But hasn’t this woman learned that social media is the devil?
Admittedly, I have taken a bath with all of my kids at some point up until they were about two. Not because I wanted them to infiltrate the only time that I had alone, but because it just seemed like the only way I could preserve time back then. I know a lot of moms who do this. As the kids become more aware of things and get curious about body parts, it makes things uncomfortable. So it eventually stops. For some, it stops a little later. For me, two was the age where it felt as if they could start remembering these things. Therefore, since society (and my husband) deemed it inappropriate, I made sure to stop. By three years old, I actually started locking the bathroom door. They bang on the door until I get out of the tub and unlock it so they can ask me something that could have waited. My seven-year-old has now figured out how to take a penny and turn the bathroom lock to make her way in. I say all this to say that no matter how hard I have tried to cover up or shield them from my own nakedness, they have caught a glimpse here and there. They usually don’t even think twice about it. I yell at them to shut the door. They don’t. Instead, I’m left exposed in the tub with a cold draft. It’s inevitable.
No one wants to scar their kids with visions of naked adults, but it’s not as uncommon as the comments on tubmom’s photos would have you believe. What is uncommon is posting a photo like that. Now that the photo has made its way onto everyone’s timelines, there’s a smh type feeling. Judgment awaits.
Is it a little weird? Kinda. Inappropriate? Maybe. Should she have posted it on the internet for the world to see? Absolutely not.

We all harbor secrets. Some are big and bad; some are small and trivial. Researchers have parsed which truths to tell and which not to.

My son is 11 years old. He has been talking about sex a lot. Also I have noticed that he has erections a lot. He came to me confused because he was masturbating and said something came out. He also confessed that one time he was thinking about me while doing it. Tonight he said he wants to have sex with me. I didn't say anything. I just asked him to leave my room. His father lives in Florida. He is not as active in his life as he should be and he does not feel comfortable talking to him about these things. I don't know what to do. I also don't know what to say to him.
Congratulations. Your son is now going through puberty and sounds very confused by the process. Interestingly, I get many letters from parents who are scared and confused when their sons express sexual attraction to them. It is not uncommon but it must be addressed. Please let your son know that while he may have an attraction toward you, sex with you is inappropriate and will never happen. Let him know that later on in life he will find appropriate partners of the right age.
In the meantime I suggest that you get your son to the pediatrician who can speak to him about the normal changes that come along with puberty. He needs to learn that erections, sexual feelings, ejaculation, and masturbation are normal and healthy aspects of growing up. He sounds scared and confused. It is a shame that his father is not available to talk to him about these issues but a pediatrician can deliver the same information and education and normalize the whole issue of puberty for your son.
Unfortunately, I believe that in this culture we are much more likely to prepare our girls for puberty than our boys. I hope that can change. Good luck with this process and please get back to me.

A single mother-of-three says she has been given a new lease of life after taking up exotic dancing.
Natalie, 46, from Suffolk, says her children are proud of her profession and she even practised for the role by performing her first lap dance for her son, Brett, 22.
'I am not embarrassed for my children to see me half naked, I gave birth to them,' said Natalie, who is also a mother to Sonny, 20, and 13-year-old Poppy.
Mother-of-three Natalie, 46, has become an exotic dancer and said she 'isn't embarrassed for my children to see me half naked, I gave birth to them'
'When I got my first pole dance gig I said to Brett "I am going to have to practice on you". He said "go on, just do it".'
She explains (and demonstrates) on Channel 5 show Mums Gone Wild: Embarrassing Parents that she loves to party with her older offspring, joining them as they down shots and go on the pull.
'The situation that my kids are there never feels weird as we are all best friends,' she explains.
Her sons say they are not at all embarrassed by their mother's 'wild' behaviour.
Sonny is even grateful when Natalie takes his new love interest off to bed with her to stop him committing the sin of having sex on a first date.
He said of his mother bedding his girlfriend: 'It is just one of those things, your mum looking out for you.
'Mum has taught me everything about life I need to know, how to treat women.
'I think all mums should be like mine, they should all let their hair down, go out and have fun.'
In contrast, teenager Poppy confesses she does find her mother's outrageous and flirty behaviour a little embarrassing on occasion.
Natalie said when Poppy is older, if she wants to go to university but can't afford the fees, she would suggest she takes up pole dancing to fund her studies
She said: 'My mum is crazy, she doesn't care what people think. I don't mind being the one who isn't drunk as I am used to it now.
'Sometimes she does embarrass me as she kisses all the girls, she just kisses anyone to be honest.'
As well as sharing partners and getting matching tattoos with her children, Natalie said she wouldn't mind if her daughter followed in her footsteps and one day became a pole dancer in order to earn an extra income.
Natalie said she doesn't care if anyone disapproves of her outrageous antics as they are 'boring'
She said: 'I told Poppy if you want to go to university and I can't afford your fees, you may have to dance but that is your choice.'
Natalie explained that it was a tragic event - the death of Poppy's father - that led to her taking up the risque activity. Now she wishes she had done it years ago as it has given her a new lease of life.
She said: 'I never thought I would dance for a living but I thought I have to take the positives from this and do all the things in life I never had the confidence to do.
'Dancing was one and it makes me feel great, life does begin at 40. I wish I had done it 20 years ago. It has made me feel sexy and I have learnt to love myself.'
She said she doesn't care i anyone disapproves of her antics.
'People say I am crazy and off the rails. I think I am normal and everyone else is a bit boring,' she said.
Mums Gone Wild: Embarrassing Parents is on Channel 5 Tuesday at 10pm
