When Demetris Payne saw a missed call from her son's junior high school, she knew something was wrong.
With a sigh, the single mom of four from Shreveport, Louisiana, called back. A school official said her 13-year-old son Jadarien was suspended for three days for talking back to his teacher. She was told to pick him up right away.
"Three days seems kind of harsh -- why not do in-school suspension?" Payne asked.
But since Jadarien had been in trouble once before, they said he had to leave.
As soon as the pair got home, Payne took away her son's cellphone and video games. She left him with her 70-year-old father who lives with them.
"When I got home from work he's eating strawberries and having fun with my dad," Payne told CBS News. "I was like, 'Oh no.' It was like a vacation."
Payne knew she needed to do more to discipline him.
So she handed him a rake and asked him to start cleaning up the yard. When he was finished, she told him he'd be volunteering his lawn care services free of charge for people in need during the remainder of his suspension.
"He didn't believe it," Payne said. "I can be soft on him and baby him sometimes."
But Payne was serious. She posted a photo of Jadarien on Facebook with the heading, "Yard service - FREE," explaining that he got suspended from school and would mow lawns, pick up trash or wash cars for members of the community over the next three days.
Within hours, Payne got requests from several residents taking her up on the offer.
So she drove Jadarien from house to house. She stood by the car and watched him work. He mowed lawns, picked up pine needles and raked leaves.
"He didn't complain the whole time," Payne said.
Jadarien spent about two hours cleaning up the yards. He ended up hitting at least eight different homes. When he was finished, Payne took him to the library, where he spent the rest of the day reading and completing homework assignments.
"We explained to him that these chores weren't to punish, punish, punish, but to teach him a lesson and teach him about discipline," Payne said. "No matter if the teacher is right or wrong -- always respect your teachers, respect adults."
On Tuesday, Jadarien was happy to finally head back to school.

The eighth-grader's classmates and teachers said they saw him on Facebook.
"He just laughed it off," Payne said. "Some people say he was 'shamed.' He wasn't shamed at all. He's not that type of kid. He really isn't."
Payne sat down with Jadarien's teachers to help come up with a plan to keep him on track. However, she's confident Jadarien learned his lesson.
Hundreds of people have shared Payne's Facebook post over the past week, many praising her for her unique approach to discipline.
"Beautiful idea! Parenting done right," one Facebook user commented.
"Raising your child to learn consequences for unacceptable behavior falls under good parenting 101," another wrote.
Payne said she hopes her other kids -- ages 3, 8 and 17 -- also learned something from Jadarien's experience. But if she has to do it all over again, she will.
"Single parents, do not give up. Keep encouraging your child. When one avenue doesn't work try another avenue. Get to the root of the problem," she advised.

Love Elizabeth Montgomery and she does an excellent job in this movie as well as Dale Midkiff.

I bought the book "Son" by the late-great Jack Olsen, but have not read it yet. I believe that it is better to watch a movie first before reading the book. Like I've said before, almost everyone says, "Oh, the book was so much better!" when discussing film. I find that to be problematic, because it's not entirely fair; it's comparing apples and oranges. Books can be any length, although they are usually kept to 500 pages or fewer, while movies are usually condensed to two hours or less. For this reason, filmmakers are often required to take liberties with a story, which doesn't bother me unless those liberties are taken for some political or otherwise unnecessary reason. But if you read the book before seeing the movie, there is a tendency to nitpick with the film too much. I didn't want to do that here. Assuming that this film is fairly accurate -- I will know almost for sure after I read "Son" -- the story itself is definitely interesting. Naturally, the film's position is something like, "Don't only blame the son for his actions. After all, his mother was a psychopath too." While the male lead here is very good, especially for a made-for-TV film, the movie takes a neutral-to-slightly-negative view of him, so most likely the position is fair. After all, he has to be blamed somewhat himself; lots of "sons" have lousy mothers but don't sexually assault anyone. And I've always been a fan of Elizabeth Montgomery, as I used to watch her on "Bewitched" when I was a kid. She gives another nice performance as an unsympathetic character here, just like she did in the movie "The Legend of Lizzie Borden." It's interesting to me that Ms. Montgomery so easily plays both good and bad characters equally; not many actors have that skill or range. I wouldn't put her in that Meryl Streep category, but Ms. Montgomery is maybe only a couple notches below that. I'm not convinced of the accuracy, but there is one scene where a friend of Fred Coe's agrees to dispose of some evidence before the trial begins. For you kids out there, listen up: never destroy evidence, especially for a friend. That would be a no-no, and you just might go to jail if you do it while trying to save somebody else's tail. If I had a "friend" that asked the same from me, he wouldn't be a friend for long, I will assure you of that. I'll give a fairly strong recommendation, although I'm a little on the fence on that "strong" part until I read the book. But I am looking forward to reading another good one from Mr. Olsen.

Donnie who looked towards the despicable Mother, was a women with no options left for Her children, descendant in this 4th Sun, like a ram of Donnie, they cried to Her vessel each asking for more time and more money. No favor was given in 1992, when the Northwest was folded. And so the blueboy Donnie was put to wander in the plains as a wolf, consuming the images of those he feasted on as he denied Ginny the Moose.

We were about to hit the back button on this before we found out it was Kevin Coe and the South Hill Rapist in Spokane in the late 80’s. We lived on the South Hill in the 90’s so it piqued our interest for that reason alone. The coverage of the case was much better done in City Confidential and even Dateline. The movie is pretty bad and the acting atrocious and even by the 80’s standard for TV movies this is bad. There’s little to no action and more than a lot is unexplained so if you’re interested in the subject you’ll need to Google to fill in the many gaps. It’s based on a true story but that’s often stated and rarely the truth when it comes to the facts of the case. A lot of this happened a few blocks from where we lived and if you can’t find a similar reason to want to watch it then avoidance would be recommended. There is a lot about Coe, and his family, that are left out and that detracts significantly from the movie.

Why are all of Elizabeth Montgomery's films not on DVD (or VHS for that matter)? Amos was the only Liz movie ever put on VHS (how about the DVD, Sony?). What about Legend Of Lizzie Borden, A Case Of Rape, Second Sight: A Love Story or Between The Darkness And The Dawn, to name a few??? All of these films were released on VHS in the UK, why not here? I'll never understand how such a beloved star's work is almost impossible to come by. Sins Of The Mother is a good one. The quality of the DVD is pretty good (can't complain at that low price). Only flaw is a long blackout between one scene (a commercial break obviously). Sins Of The Mother gives Elizabeth the opportunity to play a real nasty role. Dale Midkiff is also very good as a tormented, almost pitiful rapist. Let's hope this is a sign that someone out there realizes IT'S TIME TO PUT ALL OF ELIZABETH MONTGOMERY'S FILMS ON dvd! Her fans want more!!!! PS- The DVD-- A Killing Affiar sold on Amazon is not her film-- it's another film with the same title (with Peter Weller).

3.5 Stars This movie does a decent job for older mainstream TV, portraying such a horribly, stunted man and his multiple violent crimes he committed. It glosses over in-depth details, but tells enough to get the job done, for its venue. Some of the acting is lackluster, but it's watchable. Plenty of illustration is given in the way Coe's mother treated him and how his pathology effected his behavior, so the kernel of this story is intact. I bought the book, which is the basis for this movie; it's rated really high. Coe is still in a jail of some type; the State of Washington has special detainment for probable repeat offenders of violent/sex crimes: see wiki. I think this is a good movie and story, to take in, because it is consistent with other cases where mothers have humiliated sons, then women end up suffering. It's a lesson we all need to learn & avoid, if we want children to be humane adults.
