One of my 14-year-old son's nipples protrudes noticeably and has what feels like considerably hardened tissue underneath.
That's it – no pain or any other sensations.
He is reluctant to go to our GP so until I manage to persuade him to do that I would greatly appreciate some advice.
The most likely explanation for the swelling in one of your son's breasts is that he has a condition known as gynaecomastia, which is common in boys during puberty .
As hormone levels rise, breast tissue can be stimulated to grow in boys although often only one breast is affected.
The breast enlargement often persists for 12 to 18 months and then disappears without any treatment.
If the gynaecomastia is very persistent and if it causes a great deal of distress, surgery to remove the excess breast tissue can be performed (but this is rarely necessary).
A breast affected by gynaecomastia would not usually feel hard, so because you say the area behind your son's nipple is hard it would be wise to get your GP to examine him to make sure there is no other cause for this lump in his breast.
