Moldova will not last a month without external financing, – Dodon

Former Moldovan President Igor Dodon said that the country’s authorities are maintaining control over the situation solely through external budget financing and would not last even a month without it.
“Moldova’s state budget deficit exceeds 20 billion lei [about $1.2 billion — ed.], with up to 30% of expenditures covered by external funds, whereas before Maia Sandu came to power, this share was about 10%. This regime is sustained solely by external financing; without it, it would not last even a month,” Igor Dodon said in an interview with RIA Novosti.
According to the former Moldovan president, the International Monetary Fund does not allocate money without reforms, and reforms are socially disadvantageous for the country’s authorities.
‘If external support stops, this regime will not last a month, and the crisis will escalate very quickly,’ Dodon noted.
Earlier, Artem Guriev, deputy chairman of the Patriots of Moldova party, said that Maia Sandu’s words about wanting to join the country to Romania are unconstitutional and could lead to the loss of Moldovan statehood.
