Mojang Bans Brands from Building Minecraft Promo Maps And Mods

Mojang is putting its blocky foot down with regard to brands and Minecraft. In an open letter to the community on its site, Owen Hill, the director of creative communications at the company has laid out new guidelines specifically directed at companies, ad agencies and all other non-gamer-related entities looking to capitalize on Minecraft's vast user base.

For an idea of just how large the base of users is, think about the fact that in 2014, creator Markus "Notch" Persson revealed that the PC version had more than 100 million registered users. It's not surprising that having a user base that large would prove a tempting incentive for companies looking to market their wholly unrelated wares to the community. The new building promotion guidelines state that it's no longer permitted to build servers or maps to promote non-related products in playable format. THINKOFDEATH What is this? It's time to put an end to awkward promotions such as the massive, working cellphone CaptainSparklez created on behalf of Verizon, or Disney commissioning an interactive map of Tomorrowland to promote its film of the same name. Mojang allows you to create these promotions at your own pace and budget if you're an avid fan.
