D&D Beyond

Overwatch Wiki is a FANDOM Games Community.
Equal parts brilliant and controversial, scientist Moira O'Deorain is on the cutting edge of genetic engineering, searching for a way to rewrite the fundamental building blocks of life.

Over a decade ago, O'Deorain made waves when she published a controversial paper detailing a methodology for creating custom genetic programs that could alter DNA at a cellular level. It seemed like a promising step toward overcoming diseases and disorders and maximizing human potential.

Dissent among her peers soon followed. Many considered her work to be dangerous because of its perceived ethical shortfalls, and O'Deorain was even accused of having the same unchecked desire for scientific advancement that some believed had caused the Omnic Crisis . In addition, other geneticists were unable to reproduce the results of Moira's research, which further called her discoveries into question. Instead of kickstarting her career, her paper seriously damaged her reputation.

She received a lifeline in an offer from an unlikely source: Overwatch 's covert ops division, Blackwatch . She continued her work in the shadows while developing new weapons and technologies for the organization. Her employment was a closely kept secret, until it was uncovered during inquiries following the Venice incident. Many high-ranking Overwatch officials disavowed all knowledge of her affiliation with them.

After Overwatch was disbanded, O'Deorain was forced to turn to unconventional sources of funding. This time, she was invited to join the scientific collective that had founded the city of Oasis . Yet some have whispered that the shadowy Talon organization had already been supporting her for years, aiding her experiments in exchange for utilizing the results for their own purposes.

Though O'Deorain will go to any lengths to make scientific breakthroughs, her work is still unknown to most of the world. But now that she has been freed from all constraints, it is only a matter of time before everything changes.

Over a decade ago, Moira was a renown geneticist pushing the limits of genetic engineering research. It was during this time she published a controversial paper detailing a methodology for creating custom genetic programs that could alter DNA at a cellular level. While intending to be a step toward overcoming diseases and disorders and maximizing human potential, the paper was met with heavy criticism and speculation from her peers. Many considered the research to be far too dangerous because of its perceived ethical shortfalls, and some even accused of having the same unchecked desire for scientific advancement that some believed had caused the Omnic Crisis . In addition, her research was further called in to question when other geneticists were unable to reproduce the results of her research.

Her career and reputation damaged, Moira was given an opportunity to continue her research in secret via Gabriel Reyes and Blackwatch , Overwatch's covert op division. She would go on to develop new weapons and technology for the organization and was involved in the research that granted Gabriel the ability to disassemble and reassemble his molecules into a gaseous, wraith-like state.

Eight years before the present, Moira was included in a special mission alongside Gabriel, Jesse McCree , and Genji Shimada in Rialto .  Under the cover of night, they planned to quietly arrest Antonio Bartalotti , a high-ranked Talon member, for his believed connection to the bombing of a Blackwatch facility in Rome that resulted in the deaths of at least 14 Blackwatch agents and hospitalized Gérard Lacroix .

The team was able to successfully infiltrate Bartalotti's compound and meet him in his office. However, Antonio began taunting Gabriel by questioning how it would look on the news for Overwatch to unlawfully abduct a 'respected businessman', and stated that even if they were to take him, his 'friends' would have him released within the week.

After a brief consideration, an enraged Gabriel shot him. Moira and Genji supported the decision, while McCree was outraged.

After fighting their way through streets mobilized with Talon agents, Moira and the team were able to reach an extraction point and escape. The "Venice Incident", as it came to be known, became public news and revealed the existence of Blackwatch for the first time. It was during inquiries of the incident that Moira's employment was uncovered. Many high-ranking Overwatch officials disavowed all knowledge of her affiliation with them.

After Overwatch shut down Moira was forced to find another place for funding.
Fortunately, Moira's ambition for the evolution of science fit perfectly with the founders of  Oasis , and she would join them as their Minister of Genetics.

At some point, Moira became a member of Talons Council of Leaders. She is present at a meeting of the Leaders alongside Reaper , Sanjay Korpal , Maximilien , and
5 other members, where Doomfist proposed the organization start a war.

It is rumored that Talon has been secretly funding her research for many years in exchange for utilizing the results for their own purposes.

Moira channels a long-range beam that both heals allies and bypasses barriers to damage her enemies. While channeling this ability, Moira's movement speed increases greatly, but she cannot perform any other actions.
Besides these abilities, Moira is able to jump, crouch, and perform Quick Melee . Moira does not need to reload, however, her Primary Fire uses a resource system that must be replenished by either dealing damage by her Secondary Fire or waiting for it to recharge naturally.

One purchase of an alternate weapon skin will apply to the weapons of all unlocked skins when equipping it.

Like many of the other scientists represented in the game, Moira has an outward passion for science and the advancement thereof; however, unlike Mei and Winston , who are both bright-eyed individuals with altruistic motives for their respective researches, and unlike Mercy , who puts the lives and feelings of others before her, Moira doesn't have much in the way of limitations when it comes to how far she'll go in her experiments. She's tested on animals, she's tested on herself, and it was only through the involvement of Blackwatch - and later Oasis and Talon - that she was able to continue her research unimpeded.

In-game, Moira gives an air of superiority, especially in her voice lines (" Stupidity is not a right. "; " Injured again? "; " Unsightly. ") She also doesn't show much in the way of emotion, preferring to act in a state of constant disdain at her surroundings; she will, however, take sadistic pleasure in siphoning the life force of her enemies. Perhaps somewhat oddly for a villain in Overwatch, she seems to take either a neutral or positive stance towards Omnics (though this sentiment is shared by fellow Talon member Doomfist to an extent), as she reflects upon London's "medieval" attitudes towards them when she first spawns in King's Row occasionally.

Jeff Kaplan describes her as "weirdly self-obsessed more than anything", with a thirst for knowledge and a lack of concern for the outcomes of her scientific decisions. He also jokingly described her as "chaotic neutral", referring to the D&D Alignment system .

"Idle hands are the devil's workshop."

"One hand gives, the other takes away."

  "What an interesting hypothesis."

Moira O'Deorain , better known as simply Moira , is a playable character in Blizzard Entertainment 's Overwatch (2016), a team-based multiplayer shooter video game. In the game, Moira serves as a healer who can refill her resources by damaging enemies with her main attack. Within the game's story, she is an Irish geneticist who refuses to let any "ethical constraints" interfere with scientific advancement.

Within the game, Moira is considered a Support character. Overwatch executive producer Jeff Kaplan has labelled Moira as a "hybrid" hero; while categorized as a healer, she possesses abilities to also deal a high amount of damage. [1] Her main weapon is the Biotic Grasp, which uses biotic energy to heal allies in a small cone in front of her; the biotic energy is gained by applying the Grasp to opponents to drain their health in a similar cone. [1] [2] Her skills include Fade, which allows her to travel while invisible and invulnerable for a short distance, and Biotic Orb, a bouncing sphere that can either heal allies or damage enemies depending on which setting the player chooses. Her ultimate ability is Coalescence, a beam that heals all allies and damages all opponents it passes, bypassing any shields that may be in place. [3] Moira has a medium range; while her biotic energy meter in the middle of the screen doesn't deplete quickly, it refills slowly unless the player drains an enemy, which makes her more vulnerable. [4]

Originally from Dublin , Moira O'Deorain made waves in the scientific community more than a decade prior to the game, after publishing a controversial paper detailing a methodology for creating custom genetic programs that could alter DNA at a cellular level. Most scientists found her research dangerous due to its perceived ethical shortfalls, with some even going so far as to accuse her of having the same obsession with scientific advancement that started the Omnic Crisis. Adding to the controversy, other geneticists were unable to reproduce the results of her research. With her career stalled, Moira received a lifeline from an unlikely source: Blackwatch, the covert ops division of Overwatch under the command of Gabriel Reyes. Her involvement with Blackwatch was kept a secret until inquiries following an incident in Venice revealed her work, forcing Overwatch to publicly disavow any ties to her or her work. After Overwatch disbanded, Moira was employed by the Ministries, the scientific collective that founded the city of Oasis in southern Iraq , as the head of the Ministry of Genetics. She was also financed by Talon, and (along with Doomfist and Reaper) is among the members of its ruling council who appear in the game. Her origin story video reveals that she is responsible for transforming Gabriel Reyes into Reaper. [5] [3] She had made an appearance in Doomfist's introductory comic, released earlier in 2017. [6]

Moira was announced at BlizzCon 2017 as the game's 26th hero on November 3, 2017, [3] and was made available to play on the Public Test Region a few days later. [7] Moira was added for all players in all regions on November 16, 2017. [8] Kaplan said that Moira had been in the works for months well prior to this, having anticipated that the Overwatch player base had been asking for another healer character. [2] Kaplan believed that Moira's fit as a healer depends on the proper team composition where the team generally stays in close proximity, but that her abilities can help support those that tend to separate from the group, like Genji . [2]

Art-wise, she was envisioned by Arnold Tsang to be a warlock - or mage -like character, with robes, sleeves and hand motions that evoked a use of magic. [9] This subsequently created some difficulty with her character animations, specifically her sleeves; while they had done long flowing clothes before for Reaper, animating the sleeves with the complex hand movements took several months. This particularly was true for her Legendary skins, which animator Hak Lee said took between three and five months to properly animate. [9] [10] Moira's animations in-game were found by some journalists to be close references to various anime , such as her running animation matching that of Naruto Uzumaki from the anime Naruto . Chu acknowledged that many of Blizzard's animation team are anime fans and some references had filtered into characters and customization items, and for Moira, the anime-like touches helped to make her character visually distinctive among a fast-paced battled within the game. [11]

Moira is voiced by Genevieve O'Reilly , an Irish voice actress that Chu said was perfect for the role. [10] [9] As interview to the lead writer Michael Chu, They were interested in a new support character when the team was looking at the landscape of the game, they were also interested in the idea of making a less benevolent, villainous healer. [12] [13] Since her newly released, there was a buff for Moira which her moves was boosted and especially her Coalescence, which was causing issues due to its blinding effect. [14] Chu explains that the inclusion of Moira felt them satisfied and their fans for the supporting character and wanted to have a different gameplay. [15]
