Tara Indiana does not do modest. Indiana, 48 and the self-proclaimed “world’s greatest dominatrix,” boasts that she has "topped" over 10,000 men in her 25-year career. She also founded New York City’s legendary Den of Iniquity before moving to Los Angeles, where she currently lives and works.
Now Indiana is running for president, throwing her riding crop into the race in hopes of, as her campaign slogan puts it, “whipping American back into shape, one middle aged white man at a time.” While her tongue may be firmly in her cheek as she runs, it’s worth asking yourself if Indiana is any less ridiculous—or less qualified—than that other candidate from New York City.
I spoke with Indiana a few hours before she formally announced her candidacy at last week's Dom Con, a fetish convention held this year in L.A. As expected, the conversation inevitably turned to Donald Trump's penis.
Have you ever held elected office before? No, I haven’t held any other offices, but I come from a very political family. My family was very politically active, generation-to-generation.
What kind of politics? Left wing. I’m more libertarian, but I guess I grew up left wing. My grandmother on my father’s side and my grandfather were blacklisted during McCarthyism. My parents were very active in the 60s during the protests. My parents were musicians and they actually performed for McGovern. I remember very very vividly how crushed my mother and father were when he didn’t win [in 1972] and how much that changed them and how they viewed politics.
How did you decide to get into the line of work you’re in now? It was much different when I got into the business. It was really underground and it wasn’t something that you decided to do—it was something that you fell into. In my case, I discovered that I loved it—not only professionally, but that it was my sexual orientation and how my sexuality expressed itself. It was my lifestyle.
How has being a dominatrix for two decades prepared you for being a presidential candidate? Well, I’ve dominated over 10,000 men. I’ve trained over a thousand mistresses. Running a dungeon is quite challenging. I founded the Den of Iniquity in New York in 1994. It’s the only dungeon that’s gone national, and at its height, we had dungeons in New York, Los Angeles, and Phoenix. So I’ve run a national company.
You’re a classic job creator. I am a job creator. And at my height I employed about 80 dominatrixes. Managing a business that’s exclusively women, you have to have very, very strong leadership skills, especially because the women that you’re managing and leading are dominant women. So I feel like if I can be a leader and a manager of dominant women, being president will be a piece of cake.
Why are you running this year in particular? You could’ve run any time, but why 2016? Because if a carnival barker like Donald Trump can run for president, why not a dominatrix? It’s so ridiculous. Our politics have devolved and gotten so base and coarse. We’re so lost that I felt like doing this brings attention to how absurd it is. And part of is it is also that a lot of people don’t realize that members of the BDSM community face a lot of discrimination, can lose their jobs, their children, their houses. I really want to bring light to that in hopes that that won’t happen anymore.
You’ve dominated over 10,000 men. You must have some insight into what kind of man Donald Trump is. What do you think about him? I’ve seen his kind. When this first started, I thought to myself, This man must have the smallest penis in the world. There’s just no other way to explain it. Everything about him just shouts "small penis." The women, the tackiness, the over-the-top-ness, creating huge buildings and putting his name on them. He’s obviously just, like, over-compensating for how incredibly tiny his penis is.
So, what’s your campaign gonna look like? I’m here at DomCon, which is an international dominatrix convention with over 1,500 people attending. There’s an official mistress dinner where I’ll be making the announcement. At the opening ceremonies I’m going to be laying out my platform. Decriminalization of all consensual sex acts between adults, number one. We need funding to do scientific research to show that S&M is a sexual orientation, like being gay or straight. We need kink to be added into any of the laws dealing with discrimination. We also need to educate people in the mental health and health professions, because people in the S&M community are not getting their health care needs met. Obviously we are engaging in risky activities and a lot of people are afraid to tell their doctors what’s going on, and they’re not getting accurate information.
As you go forward in the campaign, are you worried that any skeletons might come out of your closet that could hurt your chances of being elected? I have all the skeletons and they’re all out of the closet. That’s what’s fun about it. I probably have fewer skeletons than Donald Trump.
