Kara has been on hormone replacement therapy for four months
When Eirian got married to James Cohen she was thrilled to spend the rest of her life with her handsome lover and best friend.
But seven years later, the pair's marriage was hit by a shocking revelation - James announced he wanted to be known as Kara.
"Daddy looks like a girl with a willy," one of the couple's two daughters explained to Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford on their Channel 5 documentary The Seven-Year Itch.
Kata struggled with her gender for 20 years - but after seven years of marriage decided that she was comfortable enough to finally be herself.
"I used to work on building sites and play up to being extra blokey," he said.
"For a long time I’d been distracting myself from it and threw myself into drink and drugs.
"After seven years of marriage decided couldn’t live this lie any more."
"I was just in shock I didn't know what to think," she said.
But she didn't stand in her husband's way and now Kara has been having hormone treatment for four months.
"I'm now taking hormones to make my body more feminine, my skin is softer and my face is plumping up," she said.
But Kara has decided not to go for gender reassignment surgery.
And somehow, their marriage has survived.
"When you get married you don’t expect this to happen," Eirian admitted.
"We’re still a family but we’re more like best friends, there’s no physical relationship any more.
"I don’t see the point of letting go of seven years of marriage we can still be friends and still have a family."
But she admitted she doesn’t find Kara sexually attractive any more.
"It was when the hormones came in but it was the smell that changed instantly and it freaked me out," she said.
But Kara is still attracted to women.
"I’m still very much into women, I don’t find men attractive at all," she said.
"I think I’ll be closer to a lesbian than bi-sexual but it’s a changing process."
But there was a twist at the end of the documentary when Kara revealed that she's coming OFF the hormones - after meeting her new girlfriend.
Who just happened to be his wife's best friend.
But Eirian also has a new boyfriend and they're going to live together as a foursome in Portugal.
