1.5 oz. Belvedere Pink Grapefruit
1/2 oz. Limoncello
4 oz. Prosecco (or sparkling wine)

Lemon twist and/or cherry for garnish

Add Belvedere and Limoncello to shaker. Martini shake. Strain into champagne flute. Fill remaining glass with Prosecco. Garnish with lemon twist and/or cherry.

Speaking of Belvedere, this is fast becoming one of my favorite drinks, and it's perfect for the Fourth of July.

We already covered using popsicles as a cocktail mixer. But what about the ubiquitous Bomb Pop? If you put one of those in a blender you'll get a purple slush that doesn't taste very good. (Yes, I tried it.)

Fear not! Get out your shot glasses and spoon and start layering!

Everyone recovered from National Martini Day? Yeah, me, too.


Summertime, summertime, sum-sum-summertime…

Much of the country is in the throes of a heat wave with
record high temps. (Or near record high temps but when we’re talking about this
kind of heat quibbling over a couple degrees is just splitting hairs. It’s hot.
Really hot.) It’s also the first day of Summer!

So let’s talk about summertime drinks that are cool and
refreshing.

My two never-fail go-to cool-me-down-fast drinks are: 1)
Vodka and Tonic 2) Gin and Tonic. The beauty of these two drinks is that
they’re quick and easy and instantly refreshing.

Lemonade and vodka makes a very welcomed refreshing
summertime drink when the temps soar. I like to mix one part club soda to 3
parts lemonade to add some fizz and cut down the sweet-tartness of the
lemonade. 

But what about those evenings when you want something that’s
cool and refreshing and tastes like summer?

Popsicles. Fudgesicles. (Or “fudge-ickles” as some kids used
to call them.) If you have kids, you have popsicles and/or fudgesicles. Rethink
those frozen treats. Yes, they’re sweet, refreshing summer treats. But.They are
also ready-packed drink ingredients. Break the popsicles/fudgesicles into a
blender, add a few ice cubes and some liquor, voila! quick, easy frozen
cocktails.

Add vodka and ice cubes to blender. Break Popsicles into
blender. Blend just until smooth.

*Use the same flavor or mix up the flavors for zesty taste
combinations. Edy’s frozen fruit bars make excellent smoothie-esque drinks.

Add vodka and ice cubes to blender. Break Fudgesicles into
blender. Blend just until smooth (blend too long and you’ll end up with
chocolate ice milk and vodka).

Optional: Add ½ oz. Amaretto, Chambord, or Crème de Minthe
before blending.

Tropical drinks are always perfect on hot summer days. But
they require procuring several types of juices to mix. I’ve learned that when
the thermometer starts to rise it’s time to stock up on frozen treats like
popsicles and frozen fruit bars. They’re good summer treats but they serve
another purpose: Instant frozen tropical drink mix. Lime popsicles or Edy’s
frozen lime bars act as a substitute for sour mix. So, you can make a very
quick and easy frozen version of any sour mix drink. Whiskey Sours are not one
of my go-to drinks, but, since the advent of Edy’s frozen lime bars I have
become quite a devotee of a frozen version of a Whiskey Sour. 

Add rum and ice cubes to blender. Break frozen lime bars
into blender. Blend just until smooth.

Add rum and ice cubes to blender. Break frozen pineapple and
coconut bars into blender. Blend just until smooth.

1½ oz. Grand Marnier
3½ oz. Club Soda
Juice of 2 Lemon Wedges


1½ oz Grand Marnier
1½ oz pineapple juice
1½ oz orange juice
1 dash lemon juice
Ice


1 oz. Vodka

1 oz. Gin 
1 1/2 oz. Rose's Lime Juice
Ice
Rocks glass

Chateau Grand Traverse Late Harvest Riesling I love Michigan wines and liqueurs. This Riesling is from the Northwestern Lelanau region known for its premium fruit, especially cherries (!). (as opposed to the Southwestern Paw Paw region known for its vineyards and blueberries) I find Michigan excels in light, crisp, fruity wines - Chardonnays and Rieslings, especially. If you like Riesling, this is a fabulous option. I taste strong tart apple notes with a lemony aftertaste. It's perfect for a warm summer evening or a brunch. It paired perfectly with a sharp Holland Gouda and apples. Chamisal Vineyards Central Coast Stainless Chardonnay I like oak notes in a wine, but sometimes a crisp, clear, zesty wine that lets the fruit flavors shine through is the refreshing wine of choice. Because I like fruity, zesty wines I'm open to the idea of wines and liquors aged in stainless barrels. Some wine-o-philes feel stainless barrels signify the End of Days, a blasphemy and insult to grapes the world over. But I've tried a few and so far, I have not been disappointed. The Chamisal stainless chardonnay promised tangerine, pineapple and lime notes and I definitely tasted all three. It definitely makes a strong case for stainless barrels. Lauria If you can find this, buy it. Well, presuming you like pear and cream-based liqueurs, that is. I drank it strait over ice and it was love at first sip. If you like a little kick in your coffee or espresso this is a fabulous alternative to the "usual" coffee enhancers.
