Ingrid (Old Norse: Ingiríðr ) is a slave serving Queen Gunnhild and King Bjorn in Kattegat , and later becomes Bjorn's second wife.
Gunnhild notices that Ingrid keeps looking at Bjorn and confronts her. Ingrid denies that she is attracted to him and leaves for the market.
After Gunnhild catches Bjorn having sex with Ingrid, she suggests he take her as a second wife and he does. This results in Ingrid going from a slave in Kattegat to a queen of Kattegat.
In Vestfold , King Harald lusts after her. When she rejects his advances, he rapes her. When Ingrid realizes she is pregnant, she is adamant that the baby is Bjorn's, though Harald insists otherwise. It's uncertain if she's lying, correct, or this is just wishful thinking.
When King Hakon arrives in Kattegat to support Bjorn against the Rus Invasion of Scandinavia . Queen Gunnhild is sitting on Bjorn's throne, and Ingrid is sitting in the queen's throne.
Gunnhild gives Ingrid a gentle reprimand as Ingrid's despair rises on the eve of the second part of the Rus invasion. Ingrid tells Gunnhild she is crying because Harald raped her. Gunnhild is furious about this, and offers Ingrid comfort by inviting her to sleep next to her so she isn't alone.
After Bjorn's death, a new ruler of Kattegat is required. Ingrid initially seems reluctant, but after speaking to Gunnhild and Erik the Red , she is keen to put her name forward. She has discovered she is pregnant. Gunnhild says that the father is probably Harald because he raped her, but Ingrid says she was pregnant before that happened. She uses her belief that she is carrying Bjorn's child as justification for her becoming the queen. She then performs a spell in Bjorn's tomb to help her win the title, witnessed by Erik the Red. He begins pursuing her in his hunger for power.
During the election for the new queen of Kattegat, Harald returns to reclaim Bjorn's throne. He decides to take Gunnhild as his queen. Upon learning that Ingrid is pregnant, he believes that the child is his because he raped Ingrid. He announces he will marry Ingrid as well and have the same two wives that Bjorn once had.
As time moves on, Ingrid's powers and her connection to the gods seems to grow stronger. Later on, in order to remove Erik, she performs another ritual, calling on the gods to turn Erik blind. As Erik's sight begins to deteriorate, so does his authority in Kattegat. At the same time, Ingrid begins to earn the respect of the other leaders in the area.
It is revealed that she has devised a shocking plan with one of the slaves she had known when she had been a slave herself. The pair have plotted to kill Erik when he least expected it, and Ingrid’s slave friend stabs him with a pitchfork. With Erik dead, Ingrid takes the crown. The citizens of Kattegat shout, “All hail the Queen!”
Ingrid has grown from a slave for the queen of Kattegat, to the Queen of Kattegat herself. She reveals herself to be more than what she first appears. Ingrid is relentless and powerful. It seems that she may have used her tragic past, and being raped, to channel her anger into training to become a fierce fighter and shield-maiden .
