Mistress is a 1992 comedy-drama film starring Robert De Niro , Danny Aiello , Eli Wallach , Robert Wuhl and Martin Landau . The picture was written by Barry Primus and J.F. Lawton and directed by Primus. [2] [3]

A down-and-out Hollywood screenwriter and director named Marvin Landisman ( Robert Wuhl ) is working on cheaply made instructional videos when his years-old script is read by Jack Roth ( Martin Landau ), a has-been producer who offers to help Marvin find investors for his movie.

Three men willing to put up the money are found — the ruthless businessman Evan ( Robert De Niro ), the disturbed war veteran Carmine ( Danny Aiello ) and the eccentric millionaire George ( Eli Wallach ). But each has a mistress he insists be cast in the film in exchange for his financial backing. The women are the highly talented Beverly ( Sheryl Lee Ralph ), the alcoholic flight attendant Patricia ( Jean Smart ) and the perky but talentless Peggy ( Tuesday Knight ).

Marvin repeatedly is asked to compromise his standards and change his script to accommodate these backers until the script becomes almost unrecognizable from its original form. The project also puts a strain on the marriage of Marvin and his long-patient wife Rachel ( Laurie Metcalf ).

Marvin's screenplay is a bleak one about a painter who commits suicide, and was inspired by the case of an actor named Warren ( Christopher Walken ) who abruptly committed suicide by jumping off a building in the midst of the making of a film Marvin had been directing. Roth brings in young Stuart Stratland ( Jace Alexander ) to adapt the script for the investors' mistresses, but not only does Stuart constantly enrage Marvin with his suggested changes, he falls in love with Peggy and they have an affair.

When Marvin's wife demands he grow up and move with her to New York, where she is opening a restaurant, he breaks up with her instead, giving his loyalty to a film that, as she puts it, nobody wants to see. On the verge of signing contracts, everything falls apart, when Beverly discovers that the role she expected to play has been drastically reduced in Peggy's favor.

Marvin is left alone, a broken man, done with Hollywood for good. Or at least until the next time Jack Roth gets in touch.

Rotten Tomatoes gives the film a score of 72% based on 18 reviews.

After breaking into a house he believes is empty, thief Olivier (Gérard Depardieu) is caught by the owner, Ariane (Bulle Ogier), who turns out to be a dominatrix. Improbably falling for her, Olivier returns periodically, and an impulsive romance blossoms despite Ariane's profession. Soon Olivier becomes more familiar with her work, even joining in on occasion. However, when he discovers that Ariane has a son, he attempts to "fix" her, hoping to give her a better life.

Lois Drabkin is a casting director and producer in New York City. Her film credits include recent Sundance Film Festival premieres of The Missing Person, Night Catches Us, Restless City and Listen Up Philip, and the New York casting on Steven Spielberg’s War of the Worlds. As an independent producer, her credits include The Missing Person, Weakness and Glass Chin, which is currently in post-production.

Claire, a young designer living in New York City, is romantically involved with John, a married man. Their relationship, which is limited to two or three dates a month, is light and fun for them, a romance without commitment.

Mistress is Anja Murmann’s second short film. Her first short film Wishful Thinking won the first prize at the NYU Student Film Festival in 1991 and the Otto Sprenger Prize in Hamburg, Germany in 1992. Her first feature film Fifteen Months in May won “Best New Director – Special Mention “ at the San Sebastian International Film Festival in 1997.
Anja Murmann is a graduate of NYU film school and lives in New York with her three children.

Sabine Schenk is a Producer / Line Producer based in New York. She completed her M.A. in cinema studies from NYU in 1992. She was an event coordinator at the Berlin Int’l Film Festival for three years. In 1998 she founded her own company, Schenk Productions, Inc., offering production services for local and international film and media projects in New York and throughout the United States. She works as a line producer in New York. Among the many projects she has worked on, she co-produced the documentary “Ferry Tales” which was nominated for an Academy Award in 2004 and did the NY shoot for “The Reader” in 2008. Recently she has line produced the 5-episode documentary tv series “Backroads” by Katja Esson, the NY shoot for Me & Kaminski by Wolfgang Becker and the NY shoot for the feature film Hannah Arendt by Margarethe von Trotta.
A native of Hong Kong, Radium Cheung（迎風）had always been a filmmaker at heart. Though a published photographer at 18, he took a detour and spent the next 15 years in the US working on many acclaimed motions pictures including BLUE VALENTINE, MARGIN CALL, RABBIT HOLE. he has served as Director of Photography and Co-Producer on internationally acclaimed STARLET with Dir Sean Baker, garnering various awards around the globe. he then lensed feature film LOITERING WITH INTENT with prolific American writer/director/novelist Adam Rapp, due for international release early 2015; collaborated with fellow cinematographer Richard Rutkowski on popular Dreamworks/FX TV series THE AMERICANS ; his forth collaboration with director Sean Baker on feature TANGERINE ; and currently on location filming new feature BLOOD STRIPE .
