The writer Gerard Lee is a singular talent. He first proved it in 1989 as Jane Campion's co-writer on the script for Sweetie . His inventiveness showed up again when he and Campion worked together on the unsettling television series Top of the Lake . He has an empathy for the more bizarre aspects of family life.
No doubt it's the reason Australian director Stephen Lance called on him to collaborate on the script for his feature debut, My Mistress .

It's another screwed-up coming-of-age story and it begins, aptly enough, with a suicide. Sixteen-year-old Charlie Boyd (Harrison Gilbertson) arrives home one day to find his much-loved father deceased. He promptly blames his mother, Kate (Rachael Blake), for the tragedy. She's been flirting with a neighbour. Perhaps she's even had an affair with him.
Fireworks ensue, followed by Charlie's prolonged sulk and a passionate flirtation of his own. He falls for Emmanuelle Beart, who's conveniently moved into a house nearby. With her enhanced Bardot pout heavily outlined in blood-red lipstick, she's bringing the exotic to Charlie's sleepy suburb by setting up shop as a dominatrix.
Parlour games: Harrison Gilbertson is drawn to Emmanuelle Beart, who has moved in nearby with her extensive collection of whips.
Lance very much wants us to take this scenario seriously. We're given early notice in the credits, which roll over a 19th-century painting of the Valkyrie, bare-breasted in the midst of battle. The film is a fable, he says, about the link between pleasure and pain, and his inspirations include cinema's masters of melodrama Douglas Sirk, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, and Pedro Almodovar. Almodovar, however, has a sense of humour. So does Lee. But all we see of it here are tantalising hints of what might have been if his director had possessed a feel for deadpan and the sardonic.
To confirm Charlie's status as troubled romantic, Lance does his best to conjure up echoes of James Dean, and it sort of works. But it does Gilbertson no favours, robbing him of his spirit of mischief when he most needs it.
He begins to stalk Beart's Maggie, eventually scoring a job as her gardener. After that, it's not long before she's been persuaded to admit him to the black-and-red confines of her formidably equipped S&M parlour, where we find the Valkyrie painting.
Beart, too, does a lot of posing – in shiny black latex and stilettos, accessorised with a riding crop or, in office hours, with a whip. And sometimes, when cracking it, she almost cracks a smile. The rest of the time, she looks faintly puzzled by the whole set-up.

There's a serious theme lurking here somewhere but the only time it shows itself is when Blake is on screen. In the story of Kate's fractured relationship with her son is a tough and potentially tender film, but Beart and her pout get in the way.
