FBI agents and Pottawatomie County sheriff's deputies went to Anita Murray's rural home last week to arrest a fugitive from Michigan.
When the lawmen arrested Richard Lichy on a federal warrant for defrauding a bank they walked into a business many lawmen here had never seen: A business in which male customers pay Ms. Murray to "dominate" them, lawmen said.
They saw strange photographs, whips and leather costumes at the house, said Sheriff Paul Abel.
Some of the items looked so dangerous that authorities without a search warrant checked several rooms to make sure no one was injured, the sheriff said. They found one man unharmed, asleep on the cellar floor and wrapped in a mummy's casing, he said.
Three days later, on Nov. 18, sheriff's deputies returned to the house with a search warrant and seized photographs and "some of these weird sex-aid type things," the sheriff said.
"They invaded my personal, private freedom of expression and my normal, everyday lifestyle," Ms. Murray said. "If this (Lichy's arrest) had not occurred Tuesday night, no one would ever have known my lifestyle.
"... When I visit with friends, I'm as normal as Suzy Q next door."
According to the search warrant, authorities feared the devices would be used to commit a public offense or as "means of committing a felony."
"You wouldn't believe some of that stuff," Abel said. "We're cataloging and going through the evidence we have here."
As of Tuesday, no state charges had been filed against Ms. Murray.
"We're not sure they're illegal," Abel said. However, authorities said there are "several charges being looked at. We're certainly not through with it."
Ms. Murray, 40, faces an unrelated federal charge of harboring a fugitive Lichy in her home. She is free on $5,000 bail and waved a preliminary hearing in Oklahoma City federal court Tuesday.
In his two dozen years in law enforcement, Abel said, he never has seen anything like Ms. Murray's house. Her personal stationery refers to her house as the "Slave Farm." Those who visit call her "Mistress Ann."
Ms. Murray says what goes on at her house is private and conducted at the request of her customers. She did not discuss rates, but one lawman says a trip there might cost $100.
"Is it wrong if someone comes and asks you to hit him with a whip?" asked FBI spokesman Gene Pogue. But, after hearing other agents describe items in the house, he thinks "some of these people are definitely in pain."
"You might call me perverted," Ms. Murray said, "but I would never, ever do anything to damage or maim a person or go beyond their level of tolerance."
The men who come to her house "are there for one thing that is not to get a sexual need fulfilled, but to get a mental need fulfilled," she said.
"She likes it. She really does and that's what concerns me," said one Oklahoma City police officer who has arrested Ms. Murray several times in the past year or so.
Ms. Murray said it has been her way of life to dominate "submissive" males for 15 years ever since she ended a marriage to a man who told her what to do, when to do it, how to speak and how to dress.
"I was totally brainwashed," she said. "He did make me this way."
When her marriage ended, "I swore then and there that no one would ever have that much control over my life."
She said she moved to Tecumseh in October 1982, to escape the fast pace of California and Las Vegas. She said she wanted to live quietly, without disturbing her neighbors.
The sheriff's office learned about activities at her house in April, when Ms. Murray's house was burglarized, police said. She said she went to deputies with "a great long list of my personal bondage equipment stolen."
But Ms. Murray considers her home a refuge, and sees herself as a therapist, of sorts.
"How can they condemn my lifestyle as kinky or abnormal?" Ms. Murray asked. "I have to unplug my phone after 10 o'clock every night.
There are people who call me from all over the world.
"If I embarrass any of my friends, I'm sorry, but I do feel I have the right to live my life in a normal, comfortable way."
