Colorado, 1910. Quinn Cooper can’t help feeling uneasy. But securing a job as a schoolmarm in a tiny frontier town was the only way to save her family from starvation back in Boston. And her nerves aren’t eased by a stray gunshot that spooks the sleigh horses, casting her into the snow… until she’s rescued by a handsome stranger.
Lord Alexander Barnes knows better than to believe any pretty young woman would willingly become a mother to five children. But the lonely widower finds himself charmed by the lovely newcomer and her easy rapport with his offspring. And after his disgruntled nanny quits, his heart melts at the sight of her joyfully taking over the role.
Determined to prove herself in the schoolhouse and as a governess, Quinn fears her near-poverty will prevent any possible courtship with the affluent Englishman. And between their age difference and prejudicial violence in the town, Lord Barnes is certain this second chance at happiness just cannot be.
Will their love go unspoken, or will their persistence reward them with a lasting passion?
The School Mistress is the delightful first book in the Emerson Pass Historicals sweet romance series. If you like gallant nobles, resilient heroines, and hints of mystery, then you’ll adore Tess Thompson’s Edwardian adventure in the Old West.
"Sometimes we all need to step away from our lives and sinkinto a safe, happy place where family and love are the main ingredients forsurviving. You'll find that and more in The School Mistress of Emerson Pass. Idelighted in every turn of the story and when away from it found myself eagerto return to Emerson Pass. I can't wait for the next book." - Kay Bratt,Bestselling author of Wish Me Home and True to Me

Please do some research and leave your modern views out of historical romances. First, let me say I am neither white nor male, but this statement is so a reflection of today's more liberal views and not of the time period the author is writing. I read historical romances in order to escape this reality, not be reminded of today's politics. Also, America's population during the early 1900s was predominantly white men and women and to just throw out that statement that rich white men did not care about the plight of the less fortunate just makes the author seem ignorant. Philanthropy was a thing during this time in America. Think Carnegie and Rockefeller, both white men. If you do a search on Wikipedia about philanthropy, you can read all about it. It's mind-boggling to read such a classist, sexist and racist statement in this book.

The other problem I have with this book is Ms. Thompson's lack of research and understanding of noble English life. A lord is groomed from birth to understand his obligations to his people, his family, and his country. You do not cavalierly throw it all away. There is an understanding of obligation and responsibility bred into them and Lord Alexander Barnes was described as one who seemed to understand his responsibilities to his people near his small town near Denver and to his family... And yet not to his family, people, and country in England?!? This is not consistent with a man who would leave it all behind. He's not some scapegrace who takes responsibility lightly.

Also, Americans during this time detested nobility due to having fought against the British, French, Spanish, etc. Those countries all had monarchs. Americans were very against that so why did a man who decided to forgo his lordly land and status retain the title of Lord Alexander Barnes?!?

Ms. Thompson must think her readers are not that bright... Next time, just write a fantasy or modern genre novel unless you're willing to do the research and not be lazy. I'm glad I got this book for free because I would never have paid for it.

Well. I started off annoyed with this book. Within the first few pages, Quinn Cooper laments that even tight lacing her corset she cannot it achieve any curves. No mention of relief that the fashion of the decade had already shifted to more of a straight silhouette. It took me a few days to put this aside to continue on, and then found myself exhausted.

Quinn is to be the town school teacher. Being young and pretty, she obviously cannot be allowed in town alone and thus must stay in Lord Barnes' home with him and his five children. She has remarkable perception on meeting the rest of the staff: strict Nanny is sure to be an enemy and then she is certain to be friends with the cook. And of course she is charmed by the handsome widower. In the span of a week, she becomes a teacher, evening teacher for adults, and the nanny. It was exhausting.

Lord Barnes was alright as a hero. There was nothing truly memorable about him. He left England to be his own man, leaving behind his family to do so. His first marriage ended in tragedy. He falls for Quinn as quickly as she does for him. If I have the timing right, the story happens over 6-7 weeks, a little too short to truly know someone, especially with Quinn working so much.

“In the history of humankind, I don’t think we’ve ever been successful in denying the heart’s desires.” I wholeheartedly disagree with this statement. It implies a whole host of problems: such as if someone falls in love with a married person, it would be impossible to deny that desire? That love would make it acceptable? Maybe I'm just reading too much into a fluffy romance, but it seemed like a dangerous thing to believe.

Overall, this is...OK. I doubt I would reread it and I am not inclined to read the rest of the series.

I am in an advanced reading group for Author Tess Thompson and was provided an early copy for an honest review. This review is my personal feelings of the book, not influenced by receiving the free copy.
I loved this story of a young lady (Miss Quinn Cooper) who travels from Boston to be a school teacher for a very small country town. After a long and arduous train ride, she makes it to Emerson Pass, Colorado. She has never taught school before but is determined to teach both he young and the old.
She was brought to the town by Lord Alexander Barns, a widower with 5 young children.
Ms. Thompson does a great job developing the characters and after a few chapters you will feel like you are part of the small town and fall in love with the Children and Lord Barns just as she did.
This is a Sweet Romance (clean) and also historical fiction, my favorite genre. This is book one of a series. I can't wait for the next one to come out so I can get lost in Emerson Pass again.
Great Job Ms. Thompson, another 5 star book to add to your collection!

I'm being kind giving this book two stars. I lost track of how many times I rolled my eyes at the corny dialogue. The writing is very amateurish. There are inconsistencies in details. None of the characters are exceptionally notable, and I'll probably forget about this book by tomorrow morning.

Everything is too perfect in this family. There are some situations along the way, but there's no substance or girth to the plot.

I am pretty sure a few brain cells emptied onto my kindle every time Alexander said something trite. And he and Quinn flirting about made myskin crawl. Eh, I'd skip this one if I were you.

I'm not sure I've read a historical romance since Tess Thompson's Duet for Three Hands, and I'm certainly glad that I read this one.

This series is set in small Colorado Town, and the books in the series are going from past to future and back again. I love that concept, because I always want the back story as well as the epilogue. Writing a series in this way about one family is going to check off both of those wants.

Starting with a train ride over a treacherous pass(can I just say my body drew up in a knot reading the description of tracks built on sticks) we are introduced to Quinn Cooper. She's left her widowed mother and her sister in a desperate attempt to keep them alive, and headed west to become a school teacher. This is something that was totally believable because it happened all the time at this point in history.

Needless to say there is romance as Quinn meets Alexander Barnes, the man and father that wants not only to provide an education for his children, but for all children in the town. The story is so much more than a romance though. It's a mystery(there is a murder), but it's also a lesson in life about good overcoming evil.

I am looking forward to the next book in the series, as we see how the Barnes family grows and flourishes.

The author lost me at “butt cheeks” about 10 pages in or so. Juvenile writing and I am glad I didn’t buy this book. No one wrote like that in 1910.

Tess Thompson is one of my favorite authors. I truly enjoyed reading this book. The characters were wonderful, but not as dynamic as some of her other books. I imagine that is due to this being an introductory novel.
I am not sure the historical aspects of the novel were accurate, for example, I don't think the Lord's title is correctly used. Since Alexander Barnes was not the heir to the title, he would have been called Lord Alexander, and not Lord Barnes. Moreover, I felt this character would have eschewed the title here in America. He seems to be too down to earth to relish the use of a title. I was also surprised at the availability of modern conveniences in Emerson, which is described as a "rugged" town. While reading this book, I had to put aside some of my experience of living in a house with no running water; my conversations with my grandmother, who would have been a contemporary of Quinn and Alexander; and my fascination with English titles. Once I did that I loved the book.

I just lost interest and didn't care how it ended so gave up on it. I'm going to sound pedantic here but I also had a couple of things niggle me. The story is set at the beginning of the last century and the main character is an English Lord who has moved to America to live, so I found it totally unbelievable that he kept referring to his children as 'the kids'. Surely with his upbringing he wouldn't say that?. Also 2 of the characters were from France and the girl refers to her parents as Mom and Dad - they had died before she moved to America so surely she would be used to referring to them as Mama (or Maman) and Papa? I know I'm being picky but it really bothered me.

This was such an amazing heartwarming story! I absolutely loved every minute spent in it! The School Mistress (Emerson Pass book 1) pulls you in and won't let you go even after you finish reading. I was fascinated with how beautifully this story is written, how believable characters are. It got me through so many kind of feelings I felt living this story, yes, living not just reading because it was like being there in that small town with all those different people of the community and breathing that air from back in history, getting enough feels to know how it was back in 1910. Sweet love story of Quinn and Alexander, those amazing bunch of kids and their relationships and so much more! I highly recommend this saga to everyone!
