A federal judge in Virginia is denying a request from two transgender students who wanted to be referred to the Gender Identity and Gender Expression, or GIF., as they had been taught.

The plaintiffs, the Center for Equal Rights at Georgetown University, sued in late August in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia in a federal lawsuit, alleging that the administration of U.S. District Judge Thomas Zamberman improperly allowed a transgender student to use the bathroom based on their gender identity and gender expression without permission from the state.

The student had been given permission by Zamberman to use the gender-segregated bathroom on campus. A spokeswoman for Zamberman declined to comment on the case.

The government alleges Zamberman inappropriately refused to allow transgender students to use the correct bathrooms, and other school officials, and that any order to allow the state to impose such a discriminatory policy violates the Constitution and laws.

Transgender students said the administration may have been able to prevent similar problems because it already implemented new policies in 2013 that prohibited transgender students from using the right facilities.

But on Wednesday, the center sued in Virginia Court of Appeals, saying Zamberman erred in granting the plaintiff s request and has not met the essential obligations under the Constitution in ensuring that transgender
