 - The Kinks 'Misfits' Hybrid SACD - DSD on the Velvel label. Amazon's product info on this disc says an SACD player is required. That's not quite true, this is a dual-layer CD/SACD "hybrid", and you can play it on any standard CD player as well as SACD. Whether you would want to is another question...the sound is screechy, scratchy and tinny, like a low-quality MP3. I can't speak to the SACD layer, as I don't have an SACD player, but the CD part has been subjected to the worst excesses of "loudness war" remastering practices. The music has been compressed, limited and EQ'd to within an inch of its life. There's audible clipping distortion, and the dynamics and tonal balance are noticeably skewed. I don't know if there's a better disc out there, but this one sounds terrible. Shame, I like The Kinks quite a bit, and the music deserves better.

The Kinks are the best band nobody listens to. Besides some of their earlier stuff they get no air time on classic rock stations. I bought this album after I hear "Permanent Waves", what a great tune. The rest of the album is also very solid, "Hay Fever" is fun and quirky, and Misfit, Rock & Roll Fantasy, and live life should be classic rock staples. Kinks fans can't go wrong with Misfits.

Misfits is one of my favorites. It begins with the great tune "Misfits". How true are Ray Davies lyrics? Just an amazing songwriter. Your time is now so don't throw it away. Permanent Waves, Rock and Roll Fantasy, Live Life, etc. It just doesn't get any better. One of my favorites from the genius Davies brothers.

I think that the "Misfits" CD captures the Kinks for their humor and interest in playing music that is relevant to them and not pandering to the audience. What we all love about the Kinks is their unfocused approach toward fame and mega stardom. They didn't care about it but did about the music. God bless the Kinks. My hope is the this remastered CD as well as the others in the Kinks catalogue help future generations appreciate art for what it truly is--soul inspiring--and not soley to make money.

After hearing this , I'll always be livin' on the edge of reality when I listen to it on SACD...

...the ones that were'nt quick enough to run that is ! The aloof principles of an ill-informed miscreant presented for your approval .

"A Rock and roll fantasy" is the one hit song missing from any hits CD or anthology for the Kinks.Fortunately, this is another total gem like so many others. It's worth the purchase.

Misfits, The Kinks - An imaginative Rock and Roll fantasy

Following the grand ambition of their mid seventies albums, Ray Davies and the Kinks took a few steps back and knocked out a couple of albums later in the decade that merged the high ideals of their more recent work with the short, snappy catchy pop of their early work. Misfits, right in the middle of this period, is one of my favourite of their albums. The tone is still reflective and thoughtful, reminiscent of Preservation Society, but with a harder, slightly rocky edge. Still with a social conscience, as with Preservation Act 1&2, but now wrapped up in well crafted pop tunes. My favourite is the reflective `Rock and Roll Fantasy'. Going back to Davies regular theme of the music business and the toll it takes on the performers, it is one of the best songs he's written. I am also a big fan of `Black Messiah', at the more socially conscientious end of the spectrum. `Hayfever' is a decent bit of pop which anyone who suffers from the cursed affliction will smile wryly at. All in all a decent mixture which leavens the moody thoughtfulness with humour and playfulness. This release Velvel presents the tracks with a nicely cleaned up sound. There are four bonus tracks, the standout is `Father Christmas', a wry look at the commercialisation of the festive season. It's worth the price of the album just for this. There is a decent booklet with lyrics and an interesting essay. A pretty decent release all round.

Great album! The message of the song "misfits" is a deep understanding of those who feel that there is something to say in this world quite complicated. Ray Davies is a master in his observations of everyday life. "Rock'n Roll Fantasy" is great music. The band is very sharp, bought the vinyl remastered from vevel, read the masters are the digital SACD, true or not release the sound is great, beautiful bass and bass warm sound. The sounds of Dave Davies and bright, never heard the original master cast in the 70's but this copy'm too good. Anyway ... Misfits is a great album of Kinks, maybe the last one with that classic sound (typical '70s), the albums that followed showed changes in mixing and concepts of creation, but still came classics like "Come Dancing" State of Confusion "and other

This CD is an out of print collectible! It is the 1998 remastered Velvel release. Catalog 63467-79726-2. There is a hole punch through the UPC.
Misfits was originally released in 1978, by which point the Kinks were already a handful of years beyond their creative peak, and becoming even more marginalized in their native Britain as punk took hold. To Ray Davies's credit, he does not shy from addressing his increasing irrelevance on this deeply flawed but compelling confessional. The title is an apt summary of Davies's painfully acute self-awareness. As he stares down middle age, Davies is refreshingly frank about nagging feelings that maybe it's time to get a real job: "Rock & Roll Fantasy" is a spectacular display of self-delusion and self-abasement. Unfortunately, what might have become a cathartic masterpiece is marred by music that sounds like the Kinks buying some time by impersonating Styx and Boston . --Andrew Mueller

"Misfits" is the title track for The Kinks ' 1978 album, Misfits . It was written by Ray Davies .

The lyrics of "Misfits" detail the many so-called "losers" and "failures" who are "lost without a crowd yet [they] go [their] own way." It goes on to say that "You're a misfit, afraid of yourself, so you run away and hide" and that "you've been a misfit all your life." The lyrics, however, embrace these misfits, with lyrics such as "misfits are everywhere" and "why don't you join the crowd and come inside." "Yes it's true what they say, every dog has his day," Davies sings, suggesting that these misfits will have their time.

Ray Davies said of the song's appeal, "I was trying not to be a hit machine - and we've certainly achieved that with a few albums. But we wanted to expand and find a new fan-base - and hopefully, we'd still be excited by the music. Things like "Misfits" and " A Rock 'n' Roll Fantasy " a bit later were attempts to do both; music we got a kick out of, and also improve the fan-base." [1]

"Misfits" was first released on the album of the same name on May 19, 1978. Although it was not released as a single, it was used as the B-side to the Black Messiah single. It also served as the title track of an EP named "The Kinks Misfit Record".

"Misfits" has been often praised as one of the best songs on the album of the same name . Stephen Thomas Erlewine of AllMusic called the track "a classic outsider rallying cry" and labelled it as one of the two "touchstones" of the album. [2] Rolling Stone ' s Ken Emerson said that "Misfits" is "a fitting introduction to the Kinks' most intimate album". [3]

"The Kinks Misfit Record" was the first American Kinks EP created, despite the unpopularity of EPs in the U.S. The EP features "Misfits" as well as " A Rock 'N' Roll Fantasy ", " Black Messiah ", and "Permanent Waves" (all from Misfits ). Although " A Rock 'N' Roll Fantasy " was released as a single in the United States, the other three tracks made their non-album debut in America on the EP.

A late effort by The Kinks, released in 1979 long after their heyday. The album focuses on the people on the fringes of society and social issues. It features many narrative songs focused on fictional individuals dealing with their personal issues.
