Miriam Rivera (1981 – 5 February 2019), known by the mononym Miriam , was a Mexican-born transgender model and TV personality, who resided in New York City, who became notably for starring on the British reality television show There's Something About Miriam and guesting on Big Brother Australia 2004 . She became recognized as the first openly transgender reality television star. [2] Rivera also modelled and, using the name Victoria, performed in pornography. [3]

Miriam was an activist and spokesmodel for the transgender community

She was found dead in February 2019 at her apartment in Sonora , Mexico, deemed to have committed suicide.

In 2021, Wondery published an investigative podcast series into Rivera's life and her appearance on the show There's Something About Miriam titled Harsh Reality . [4]

Rivera was born in 1981 in Mexico. She was assigned male at birth and desired a gender confirming surgery at the age of four. She said that while her three brothers liked baseball , she preferred Barbie dolls. [5] Rivera said strangers assumed she was a girl:
They used to come to my mother and say, "Oh you have a beautiful daughter", and my mother used to say "That's my son", and I used to get angry. And I have always been attracted to men. When I was 11, I met someone who's gay and start talking to me about hormones, which I got very interested in. [6]
Rivera said she soon started taking hormones . She told reporters she came out after being suspended from school at age 12, and her family was supportive. [7]

Remy Blumenfeld first saw Rivera participating in a girl band , after which he planned to cast her in a TV show that was later released as There's Something About Miriam . [8] She was filmed in Ibiza for There's Something About Miriam in 2003, but the show's airdate was delayed until out-of-court settlement of litigation by contestants in 2004. It originally aired in the United Kingdom on Sky1 in February 2004. Hosted by Tim Vincent , it featured six men wooing Rivera without revealing that she was transgender until the final episode. Rivera enjoyed the attention she received following the show. [9]

After the high ratings for the show, she was cast as a guest on Big Brother Australia 2004 , also produced by Endemol . A documentary about her life was commissioned but not aired. [10]

She stated she never planned to have sex reassignment surgery , citing concerns about complications or loss of sensation. [6] She said, "My mother always says to me, 'Why would you want to be half-and-half? Why don't you want to be a complete woman?' But I just love myself and I'm really enjoying my life." [11]

The New York Post reported that Rivera was seriously injured in 2007 when she was thrown out of a third-story window at her home. [12] Rivera later told reporters she fell out of a fourth-story window while trying to escape a burglar. [13] In 2008, she was a special guest on Ewa Drzyzga 's TVN show Rozmowy w toku in Poland. In more recent years, Rivera was active in Manhattan 's ball culture . [14]

Rivera was married to Daniel Cuervo, with whom she lived in New York City. [14] She was found dead on 5 February 2019, in her apartment in Mexico. [8] Her death was confirmed by Cuervo in a Facebook post and received news coverage six months later. [2] [8] Her death was classified as suicide by hanging by the police, but Cuervo believes she was murdered. Cuervo received a death threat from someone who told him to "never come back to Mexico" and not to prepare her funeral. [14]

Miriam Rivera, the first openly transgender reality TV star, died on February 5 in Mexico.
She was 38 years old, and her husband, Daniel Cuervo, confirmed the news in a Facebook post. Even though she died several months ago, the news broke on Friday.
According to reports, Rivera was found in her apartment and died under mysterious circumstances. She allegedly hanged herself but Cuervo is disputing that she died by suicide.
“My Adorable wife rest in peace darling until God lets us be together again,” he wrote on social media .
He told Daily Mail Australia he believes it was foul play. “Miriam called me [in New York] from Mexico, telling me she was feeling sick and vomiting blood, so I told her to get to the hospital,” he said.
Cuervo also revealed he wanted to bring her body back to New York but she was cremated before an autopsy was performed.
He then allegedly received a threatening phone call from a man who told him to never come back to Mexico or he'd be killed.

Jeanett Ørtoft, a friend of Rivera's, also believes Rivera died suspiciously. “Some say she was killed for going against human trafficking, others say she took her own life," she told Daily Mail Australia.
Rivera was best known for being a cast member of the 2004 dating show "There's Something About Miriam" and "Big Brother Australia."
She was also an active member of the New York's ballroom scene and was part of the House of Xtravaganza. The house honored her in a tribute on Instagram, “Remembering… our beautiful Miriam Xtravaganza.”

THE world's first transgender reality star and model who was found hanged in “mysterious circumstances” was murdered, her husband has said.
Daniel Cuervo suspects his wife Miriam Rivera, star of reality show There’s Something About Miriam, was killed after she refused to accept work as a prostitute.
The Mexican-born TV star was found dead at the age of just 38 at her home in her native country on February 5.
Mr Cuervo told Daily Mail Australia: "On the morning of February 5, Miriam called me [in New York] from Mexico, telling me she was feeling sick and vomiting blood, so I told her to get to the hospital.
"She called me again before leaving the hospital at 12pm and that was the last time we spoke."
By 2pm, Miriam was found hanged at her home in Hermosillo, Mexico.
Now, Mr Cuervo is speaking out about why he believes his wife's death may have been 'passed off' as a suicide.
He recalled the moment he asked authorities to fly Miriam's body to New York, but was told her remains had been cremated, leaving no opportunity to perform an autopsy.
He has also alleged he received a "threatening" phone call around the time he was trying to arrange Miriam's funeral.
During the call, he claimed an unknown man threatened: "Don't come back to Mexico or we'll kill you too."
Miriam’s close friend added that some suspect she may have been killed for speaking out against human trafficking.
Jeanett Ørtoft theorised: "Some say she was killed for going against human trafficking, others say that she took her own life."
She added that the last time she spoke to Miriam, the TV star said she was “looking forward” to the future.
'The last time I was on the phone with her, a few weeks before her death, she told me she was just about to finish a degree and was looking forward to that,.
"She told me she wanted to write a book about her life."
In a Facebook post from February 25, Ms Ørtoft wrote: “RIP, dearest Miriam. Jan 1981 - Feb 2019.
“The news about you being taken away from this world far too early and in this way broke my heart and left me in shock and tears.
“You made a huge difference for me and so many other people around this planet. Your life was too short, but you made it remarkable.
“I feel deeply grateful that you let me into your heart, mind and life. Thanks for all the great memories.
“We had plans about creating more this year, and I can't believe I will never see you again. At least not on this side.
“You were the shiniest star on earth, now you're the most shiny in heaven.”
Miriam first shot to stardom in 2004 on the controversial British TV show – There’s Something About Miriam, which was viewed by millions.
The Sky 1 show saw six straight British males battling for the attention of the beautiful glamour model.
But in a dramatic twist in the final episode, Miriam revealed her identity as a transgender woman.
This came as a surprise to the contestants, who all sued producer Endemol for conspiracy to commit sexual assault, defamation and personal injury.
They all claimed they had suffered “psychological and emotional damage” and eventually settled for an undisclosed fee.
One report suggested they’d been paid as much as £500,000 each.
The winner, Tom Rooke, received £10,000 in prize money and was supposed to go on a romantic holiday with Miriam.
But he didn’t follow through with the trip.
Despite the controversy, the show was a hit in the UK and was later aired in Australia on Channel 10.
Miriam later made a highly-publicised guest appearance on Big Brother Australia's fourth season, which was watched by millions.
In 2010, the Daily Mirror reported that Miriam was working as a “£300-an-hour escort” in Knightsbridge, London.
The reality star confirmed she offers clients a “full service” – saying “I do absolutely everything”.
She added: “Once you have paid for me, you can do whatever you want.”
Miriam told how she worked as an escort to pay off hospital bills racked up after an accident.
She revealed that many of her clients were wealthy businessman and celebrities who are desperate to “experiment”.
She told the Mirror: “They pay for my companionship and we only have sex if I want to. It’s voluntary.
“But most of the time they are so hot I end up being the one begging them. I have no regrets – I’m having fun.
“I started doing this for the money and when everything is sorted I will stop.”
